  • Perovskite-structured samarium strontium cobaltite (SSC), which is mixed ionic electronic conductor (MIEC), is considered as a promising cathode material for intermediate temperature-operating solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) due to its high electrocatalytic property. Cathode material containing cobalt (Co) is unstable at high temperature and has a relatively high thermal expansion property. In this paper, Sm-Sr-(Co,Fe,Ni)-O system with perovskite and spinel structures was investigated in terms of electrochemical property and thermal expansion property, respectively. Area specific resistance (ASR) was measured by ac impedance spectroscopy to investigate the electrochemical property of cathode, and thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) was measured by using dilatometer. Micro structure of cathode was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Perovskite-structured $Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ showed the ASR of $0.87{\Omega}/cm^{2}$, and $Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}NiO_{3-\delta}$, which actually has a spinel structure, showed the lowest TEC value of $13.3{\times}10^{-6}/K$.

  • A new method is proposed for the calculation of the unrelaxed surface energy of spinel ferrite. The surface energy calculation consists of (1) setting the central and computational domains in the semi-infinite real lattice, having a specific surface, and having an infinite real lattice; (2) calculation of the lattice energies produced by the associated portion of each ion in the relative domain; and (3) dividing the difference between the semi-infinite lattice energy and the infinite lattice energy on the exposed surface area in the central domain. The surface energy was found to converge with a slight expansion of the domain in the real lattice. This method is superior to any other so far reported due to its simple concept and reduced computing burden. The unrelaxed surface energies of the (100), (110), and (111) of $ZnFe_2O_4$ and $Fe_3O_4$ were evaluated by using in the semi-infinite real lattices containing only one surface. For the normal spinel $ZnFe_2O_4$, the(100), which consisted of tetrahedral coordinated $Zn^{2+}$ was electrostatically the most stable surface. But, for the inverses pinel $Fe_3O_4$, the(111), which consisted of tetrahedral coordinated $Fe^{3+}$ and octahedral coordinated $Fe^{2+}$ was electrostatically the most stable surface.

  • The spinel Ihelzolite of ultramafic xenoliths are found in the alkali basalt from eastern part of the Cheju island, Korea. The xenolith is are mainly composed of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and spinel. Based on the chemical compositions of the constituent minerals, the ultramafic xenolith belong to upper mantle peridotite. Each minerals have a protogranular texture. Olivine with kink band texture partly shows undulatory extinction. Some clinopyroxenes have spongy textured rims. Brown spinels occur in the interstices between olivine and pyroxene grains. Olivine is mostly forsterite $(Fo_{89-90})$. Orthopyroxene is enstatite $(Wo_{1.3}En_{88.4}Fs_{10.3})$ with 3.87~5.25 wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}$. Clinopyroxene is diopside $(Wo_{48.0}En_{46.2}Fs_{5.8})$ with 6.75~5.03 wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}$. Spinel has the Mg value of 75.9 and its Cr-number is 10.2. According to the PoT estimations for the mantle xenoliths, equilibrium temperatures of the xenoliths range from 1023 to $1038^{\circ}C$ and pressure is 18 kbar. Spinellhelzolite from this area, which is characterized by lower Cr-number (10.2) and homogeneous chemical compositions, supports that these ultramafic xenoliths are derived from the upper mantle.

  • Aluminum oxynitride spinel (ALON) was synthesized by the direct melt nitridation (DMN) process using aluminum metal and aluminium oxide. The amount of ALON increased with increasing the reaction sintering temperature. The specimen containing up to 10 wt% Al showed ALON phase only when heat-treated beyond $1750^{\circ}C$. Whereas the specimen composed of more than 12 wt% Al showed unreacted AlN phase. Bulk density of reaction-sintered specimen was increased with increasing sintering temperature, except the speimen containing unreacted AlN where the density slightly decreased when heat-treated beyond $1750^{\circ}C$, Transgranular fracture mode was observed predominantly in the specimen with higher Al content.

  • Spinel, mullite, forsterite and cordierite composition powders were synthesized from Mg(NO3)2.6H2O, Al(NO3)3.9H2O and SiCl4-ethanol solution by spray pyrolysis method and the sinterability of these powders were investigated. The bulk density of spinel and mullite specimens sintered at 1,$700^{\circ}C$ for 1hr was 3.56g/㎤(99.5% relative density) and 3.16g/㎤(99.7% relative density), respectively. (Green compacts were made from powders prepared at 1,00$0^{\circ}C$). The bulk density of forsterite and cordierite specimens sintered at 1,480 and 1,40$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs were 3.217 and 2.155g/㎤, respectively. (Green compacts were made from powders prepared at 1,00$0^{\circ}C$). The constituent compositions of spinel and mullite specimens sintered at 1,$700^{\circ}C$ for 1hr were 27.5wt% MgO and 70.5wt% Al2O3, respectively. Vickers microhardness and fracture toughness of spinel sintered at the above condition were 13.7GPa and 2.6MN.m3/2, respectively, and room temperature bending strength, 425MPa, was nearly maintained even at the elevated temperature. In the case ofmullite specimens, those values were 13.5GPa, 2.2MN/m3/2 and 430MPa, respectively.

  • This paper presents the synthesis of one-dimensional spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ nanostructures using a facile and scalable two-step process. $LiMn_2O_4$ nanorods with average diameter of 100 nm and length of 1.5 ${\mu}m$ have been prepared by solid-state lithiation of hydrothermally synthesized ${\beta}$-$MnO_2$ nanorods. $LiMn_2O_4$ nanowires with diameter of 10 nm and length of several micrometers have been fabricated via solid-state lithiation of ${\beta}$-$MnO_2$ nanowires. The precursors have been lithiated with LiOH and reaction temperature and pressure have been controlled. The complete structural transformation to cubic phase and the maintenance of 1-D nanostructure morphology have been evaluated by XRD, SEM, and TEM analysis. The size distribution of the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ nanorods/wires has been similar to the $MnO_2$ precursors. By control of reaction pressure, cubic 1-D spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ nanostructures have been fabricated from tetragonal $MnO_2$ precursors even below $500^{\circ}C$.

  • In the paper, Significant sintering phenomena at refractory temperature ranges, from $1400^{\circ}C$ to $1700^{\circ}C$, of the pure spinel ($MgAl_{2}O_{4}$) and the experimental data from other researchers are analysed and compared in terms of density ($\rho$), grain growth exponent(n), and activation energy (Q). Similar to the density rewsults, the grain growth results above $1600^{\circ}C$ appear similar for the spinel, but for temperatures lower than about $1600^{\circ}C$ results are distinctly differently grouped. However, the grain growth exponents are different, six for the spinel (below $1600^{\circ}C$), and five at high temperatures(above $1600^{\circ}C$), with the activation energy of 474$\pm$38 kJ/mol below $1600^{\circ}C$, which is very close to the published values, 360~580 kJ/mol.

  • In this study, we have investigated the effects of Cr dopant on the sintering and electrical properties of ZnO-$Sb_2O_3$ (ZS) ceramics for varistor application. Spinel phases including $\alpha-$ and $\beta$-type was formed at ZS system and $\alpha$-spinel was stabilized by Cr doping in ZS system. Densification of ZS and ZSCr system was retarded to $1000^{\circ}C$ by the formation of spinel at $800^{\circ}C$. The morphology and its distribution of spinel phases in ZS system was homogeneous but disturbed by Cr doping. In ZSCr the densification of ZnO compared with ZS system was more retarded by low concentration of Zn interstitial defects induced by Cr doping in addition to the effect of spinel phase formation. The defects in each system were identified as attractive coulombic center (ZS: 0.13 eV, ZSCr: 0.12 eV) and singly charged oxygen vacancy $V_0^{\cdot}$ (ZSCr: 0.33 eV). In all ZS and ZSCr system have week varistor behavior by the formation of double Schottky barrier at grain boundary but its stability of barrier was very sensitive to sintering temperature.

  • Mn-Ni-Co type thin films were prepared at various conditions by a rf magnetron sputtering system. At the condition. or substrate temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ and $Ar/O_2$= 10/0, a cubic spinel phase was obtained. When oxygen was included in process gas, a cubic spinel phase was not formed even after the thermal annealing at $900^{\circ}C$. The thermistor thin film had no other elements except Mn, Ni and Co. The infrared reflection spectra of the thermistor thin films showed that the films had somewhat high reflectance for incoming infrared ray with some angle. The etch rate of the thermistor thin films was about 63nm/min at a condition of DI water : $HNO_3$: HCl = 60 : 30 : 10 vol%. The B constant and temperature coefficient of resistance of the thermistor thin films were 3500 K and -3.95 %/K, respectively. The voltage responsivity of the thermistor thin film infrared sensor was 108.5 V/W and its noise equivalent power and specific detectivity were $5.1\times 10^{-7}$ W/$Hz^{-1/2}$ and $0.2\times 10^6$cm $Hz^{1/2}$/W, respectively.
