Development of Spectroscopy Toolkit for Spectrum Measurement Experiments Using a CsI(Tl)/PIN Diode Detector

  • The spectroscopy toolkit has been developed and tested. The toolkit consists of a CsI(Tl)/PIN diode detector, integrated electronics, and a multi.channel.analyzer and its size was 40 cm(width) by 20 cm(length) by 6 cm(high). It is compact, very portable and simpler and cheaper compared to the conventional spectroscopy system. The gamma energy resolutions of the toolkit were 7.9% for the 660 keV of $^{137}Cs$ and 4.9% for 1,332 keV of $^{60}Co$ respectively. The linearity for gamma energies was good. When the energy spectrum of a ceramic sample containing $^{232}Th$ was measured with the spectroscopy toolkit for 20 minutes, there were significant peaks of the heavy metal. These results show that the resolution of the spectroscopy toolkit is sufficient to accumulate a quality spectrum in a few minutes by using weak, encapsulated commercial sources. Furthermore a toolkit experiment that how to measure energy spectra using the toolkit, and how to identify specific isotopes in a pottery piece, could be widely adopted for education and even for more sophisticated and higher level experiments.

The Frequency Spectrum Characteristics of Radiated Electromagnetic Wave by the Process of Discharge Progress in $SF_6$ ($SF_6$ 가스중 방전진전과정에 따른 방사전자파의 주파수 스펙트럼 분포 특성)

  • This paper simulated discharge progress and partial discharge using needle-plan electrodes system in $SF_6$, studied the distribution of frequency spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic waves using biconical antenna and spectrum analyzer. From results of this study, a method was introduced for measurement and analysis of the radiated electromagnetic waves in accordance with discharge progress in $SF_6$. Besides, according to the consideration of the mutual relation between frequency spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic waves and discharge progress, it was confirmed that detecting partial discharge and estimating discharge progress in $SF_6$ can be possible.

  • In this study, a relationship between DC discharge and the radiated electromagnetic waves is investigated by measuring electromagnetic waves using a biconical antenna and a spectrum analyzer. The characteristics of frequency spectrum ofthe radiated electromagnetic waves was measured at the atmospheric pressure in Liquid Nitrogen $(LN_2)$ during partial discharges in nonuniform and uniform electric field depend on positive DC power. From this experiment results, it was confirmed that when partial discharge was produced in Liquid Nitrogen and Air, the signal of partial discharge was detected by this experiment and the analysis method. It is considered thatthese results obtained from this investigation may be used as fundamental data for diagnosis and prediction of insulation on the equipments ultra-high voltage, superconducting and cryogenic applications.

  • Insulation diagnosis techniques of power equipments for the stable power supply and prevention from accidents are of high importance. Diagnosis techniques is able to prevent from large accidents before they happen by finding signs of the accidents. From this point of view, this paper simulated discharge progress and partial discharge using needle-plan electrode system in air, studied the distribution of frequency spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic waves using biconical antenna and spectrum analyzer. From results of this study. the new method was introduced for measurement and analyzation of the radiated electromagnetic waves in accordance with discharge progress in air.   • This paper is a review of the results of examining the flow characteristics of gas and particles with regards to pipe-type nozzle and converging nozzles depending on nozzle geometry. The nozzles used in this experiment are the pipe-type nozzle which can sufficiently mix the gas and particles, and the converging nozzle which can rapidly accelerate fluid . The particles used at the time of this experiment each measured 0.8, 30, 60 and 80${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in the diameter. The Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer was used to measure the velocity of each particle, and the Hot-wire probe was used to measure the spectrum in order to analyze the flow near the nozzle exit of the 0.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ particle.

  • The spectrum of impulse response signal which is obtained from an impulse hammer testing is used for frequency response function, nevertheless it has serious faults when the record length for the signal processing is not very long. The faults cannot be avoided with the conventional signal analyzer that is processing all the signals as if they are always periodic. The signals generated by the impact hammer are undoubtedly non-periodic because of the damping, and are acquired for limited recording time due to the memory as well as the computation performance of the signal analyzer. This paper will make clear the relation between the faults and the length of recording time, and propose the way for solving the faults.

  • 일반적으로 고주파인 위성신호를 수신하려면 전송로상의 손실이 생기는데 이러한 손실을 거치지 않고 위성신호를 직접수신하여 고주파대역의 신호의 손실을 줄이기 일반적으로는 도파관을 사용하여야 하나 동관을 이용하여 12GHz${\sim}$20GHz 대역을 통과하는 전파의 특성을 측정하였고 11.71GHz${\sim}$12.01GHz 대에서는 측정이 되지 않는 차단 주파수 현상을 보였으며 13GHz 이상의 주파수에서는 원하는 신호가 측정되었다. 측정 장비로는 Aglient 사의 Network Analyzer에서 11GHz 이상의 신호를 만들어 각각 5C HFBT, 10C HFBT Cable과 동관으로 보낸후 Spectrum Analyzer로 들어오는 신호를 측정하였으며 이에 따른 전송 특성을 분석 하였다.

  • In the mass spectrum of the mass spectrometer, the spectrum of the low peak adjacent to the spectrum having the high peak value is connected to each other and thus the separation is difficult. This inter-spectral overlap causes degradation of the mass spectral detection performance and resolution. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the mass spectrum detection performance and peak accuracy of residual gas analyzer. The type discrimination according to the characteristics of the ion signal block and the pre-correction for the peak position error can separate and detect the spectrum of the low peak connected to the adjacent spectra. To verify the performance of the proposed method, we compared the proposed method with the conventional method in simulations using actual ion signals obtained from the mass spectrometer under development.

  • In this paper the imitated electric defect was simulated by insulation particle in the model GIS. This paper studied the distribution of frequency spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic waves using antenna (30-2,000[MHz]) and spectrum analyzer. From results of this study, a new method was introduced for measurement and analysis of the radiated electromagnetic waves in accordance with discharge progress of each defect in the model GIS. It was confirmed that detecting partial discharge and estimating discharge progress can be possible in the model GIS.
