SEMI-ANALYTIC MODELS FOR ELECTRON ACCELERATION IN WEAK ICM SHOCKS

  • We propose semi-analytic models for the electron momentum distribution in weak shocks that accounts for both in situ acceleration and re-acceleration through diffusive shock acceleration (DSA). In the former case, a small fraction of incoming electrons is assumed to be reflected at the shock ramp and pre-accelerated to the so-called injection momentum, pinj, above which particles can diffuse across the shock transition and participate in the DSA process. This leads to the DSA power-law distribution extending from the smallest momentum of reflected electrons, pref, all the way to the cutoff momentum, peq, constrained by radiative cooling. In the latter case, fossil electrons, specified by a power-law spectrum with a cutoff, are assumed to be re-accelerated from pref up to peq via DSA. We show that, in the in situ acceleration model, the amplitude of radio synchrotron emission depends strongly on the shock Mach number, whereas it varies rather weakly in the re-acceleration model. Considering the rather turbulent nature of shocks in the intracluster medium, such extreme dependence for the in situ acceleration might not be compatible with the relatively smooth surface brightness of observed radio relics.

A simplified normalized cumulative hysteretic energy spectrum

  • For energy-based seismic design, a simplified normalized cumulative hysteretic energy spectrum proposed for obtaining hysteretic energy as energy demand is the main objective in this paper. The dimensionless parameter, ${\beta}_{Eh}$, is presented to express hysteretic energy indirectly. The ${\beta}_{Eh}$ spectrum is constructed directly through subtracting the hysteretic energy of single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system energy equation. The simplified ${\beta}_{Eh}$ spectral formulation as well as pseudo-acceleration spectrum of modern seismic provisions is developed based on the regression analysis of the large number of seismic responses of SDOF system subjected to earthquake excitations, which considers the influence of earthquake event, soil type, damping ratio, and ductility factor. The relationship between PGV and PGA is established according to the statistical analysis relied on a total of 422 ground motion records. The combination of ${\beta}_{Eh}$ spectrum and PGV/PGA equation allows determining the cumulative hysteretic energy as a main aseismic design indicator.

한반도 지진특성을 고려하여 모사된 강진동에 대한 가속도 응답스펙트럼 (The Acceleration Response Spectrum for Simulated Strong Motions Considering the Earthquake Characteristics of the Korean Peninsula)

  • 응답스펙트럼은 내진설계에 있어서 중요한 기초자료의 하나이다. 응답스펙트럼을 얻기 위하여, 한반도에서 발생하는 지진들의 지진원 특성에 근거하여 다수의 강진동을 Boore(2005)에 의해 개발된 컴퓨터 프로그램 SMSIM을 사용하여 모사하였다. 여러 연구결과들에 대한 충분한 검토를 통하여, 모사에 필요한 입력자료들을 선정하였다. 모사된 강진동으로부터 얻은 응답스펙트럼은 가속도 1.0 g에 대하여 정규화하여 미국 원자력위원회(1973)의 표준응답스펙트럼과 비교하였다. 이 연구에서 얻어진 응답스펙트럼의 스펙트럼 진폭은 대략 10 Hz 이상의 고주파 대역에서 표준 응답스펙트럼 값에 비하여 큰 것으로 나타났다. 또한 응력강하량의 변화에 따른 응답스펙트럼의 변화를 평가하였다. 그 결과 큰 응력강하량에 대한 응답스펙트럼의 스펙트럼 진폭은 저주파 범위내에서 큰 값을 나타냄을 제시하였다.

  • 최근 수행된 우리나라 원전 부지에 대한 지진재해도 해석 결과 작성된 등재해도 스펙트럼에서 고진동수 성분의 지진동이 매우 우세하게 나타나고 있다. 일반적으로 지진취약도 해석에서는 설계 스펙트럼에 내재된 보수성을 평가하기 위해 스펙트럼 형상계수가 사용된다. 본 연구에서는 입력지반운동 스펙트럼의 형상이 변화함에 따른 층응답스펙트럼의 형상 변화를 분석하였다. 이때 입력 스펙트럼으로부터 직접 층응답스펙트럼을 작성할 수 있는 직접법을 사용하였다. 본 연구 결과 건물 내부에 설치된 기기의 취약도해석에서는 입력스펙트럼에 내재된 보수성을 구조물의 고유진동수에 대한 스펙트럼 형상계수가 아닌 기기의 고유진동수에 따른 층응답스펙트럼 형상계수로 고려하는 것이 정확한 취약도해석 결과를 주는 것으로 나타났다.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fundamental frequency of the dam by the various methods using real microearthquake records which were measured on 'H' dam site and to compare each results. In this study, the fundamental frequency was evaluated by the frequency analysis of the microearthquake records which were measured on the dam crest, by the evaluation of acceleration amplification ratio between the foundation and the crest of dam, and by the evaluation of acceleration response spectrum ratio between the foundation and the crest of dam, respectively. Among these methods, it was found that the method by the evaluation of acceleration response spectrum ratio between the foundation and the crest of dam was the most effective method. But, if the simple engineering judgement can be considered, it was thought that the all three methods could reasonably evaluate the fundamental frequency of the dam.

경주지진 관측자료에 기반한 유효최대지반가속도 분석 (Investigation on Effective Peak Ground Accelerations Based on the Gyeongju Earthquake Records)

  • This study investigates important parameters used to determine an effective peak ground acceleration (EPGA) based on the characteristics of response spectra of historical earthquakes occurred at Korean peninsula. EPGAs are very important since they are implemented in the Korean Building Code for the seismic design of new structures. Recently, the Gyeongju earthquakes with the largest magnitude in earthquakes measured at Korea took place and resulted in non-structural and structural damage, which their EPGAs should need to be evaluated. This paper first describes the basic concepts on EPGAs and the EPGAs of the Gyeongju earthquakes are then evaluated and compared according to epicentral distances, site classes and directions of seismic waves. The EPGAs are dependant on normalizing factors and ranges of period on response spectrum constructed with the Gyeongju earthquake records. Using the normalizing factors and the ranges of period determined based on the characteristics of domestic response spectra, this paper draw a conclusion that the EPGAs are estimated to be about 30 % of the measured peak ground accelerations (PGA).

Wavelet-transform-based damping identification of a super-tall building under strong wind loads

  • A new method is proposed in this study for estimating the damping ratio of a super tall building under strong wind loads with short-time measured acceleration signals. This method incorporates two main steps. Firstly, the power spectral density of wind-induced acceleration response is obtained by the wavelet transform, then the dynamic characteristics including the natural frequency and damping ratio for the first vibration mode are estimated by a nonlinear regression analysis on the power spectral density. A numerical simulation illustrated that the damping ratios identified by the wavelet spectrum are superior in precision and stability to those values obtained from Welch's periodogram spectrum. To verify the efficiency of the proposed method, wind-induced acceleration responses of the Guangzhou West Tower (GZWT) measured in the field during Typhoon Usagi, which affected this building on September 22, 2013, were used. The damping ratios identified varied from 0.38% to 0.61% in direction 1 and from 0.22% to 0.59% in direction 2. This information is expected to be of considerable interest and practical use for engineers and researchers involved in the wind-resistant design of super-tall buildings.

관측 자료를 활용한 지진가속도 시간이력 추정방법 제안 (Proposal of Acceleration Time History Prediction Method Based on Seismic Observation Data)

  • 본 논문에서는 지진발생 후 임의 위치에서 발생된 지진가속도 시간이력을 추정하기 위하여 기상청 지진관측소 계측자료를 활용하는 방법을 제안하였으며, 국내에서 발생한 지진기록을 이용하여 제안한 응답스펙트럼 및 시간이력 추정 방법의 적용성을 평가하였다. 임의 관측소에서 계측된 결과를 인근 관측소 자료를 이용하여 추정하는 방법으로 제안방법을 검증한 결과, 지반정보 없이도 해당 관측소 위치의 지진가속도 응답스펙트럼 및 시간이력을 낮은 수준의 오차로 추정할 수 있었으며, 특히 시간이력의 경우 형상 및 위상의 변화에 큰 차이가 없음을 확인할 수 있는 등 제안된 방법이 임의 위치에서의 지진가속도 시간이력을 추정하는데 유효함을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • In order to evaluate the cost effectiveness of seismic isolation for bridges in low and moderate seismic region, a method of calculation minimum life-cycle cost of seismic-isolated bridges under specific acceleration level and soil condition is developed. Input ground motion is modeled as spectral density function compatible with response spectrum for combination of acceleration coefficient and site coefficient. Failure probability is calculated by spectrum analysis based on random vibration theories to simplify repetitive calculations in the minimization procedure. Ductility of piers and its effects on cost effectiveness are considered by stochastic linearization method. Cost function and cost effectiveness index are defined by taking into consideration the characteristics of seismic isolated bridges. Limit states for calculation of failure probability are defined on superstructure, isolator and pier, respectively. The results of example design and analysis show that seismic isolation is more cost-effective in low and moderate seismic region than in high seismic region.

  • The modal combination methods are studied for estimating the maximum structural responses in the seismic analysis by the response spectrum method. The most important problem in the modal combination is how to account for the correlation between the modal responses and to combine the high frequency modes (of which frequencies are greater than that at which the spectral acceleration approximately returns to the ZPA(zero period acceleration)). In this study, therefore, the widely known methods are investigated and compared among the numerous ones proposed up to now including those recommended in Regulatory Guide 1.92. The applicability of each method is investigated through example analyses also.
