  • Characteristics of the high frequency pulsatile flow have been investigated experimentally to understand the flow phenomena in the hydraulic system. One axis fatigue test bed, which is widely used for automobile field test, is used. Four pressure transducers, an amplifier and a A/D convertor are used to obtain the high frequency pulsatile pressure waveform in hydraulic system. The characteristics of frequency are analyzed by power spectrum method. According to the variations of pump input pressure and actuator acceleration frequency, the pressure is measured with or without an accumulator. The amplitude of pressure with accumulator is very lower than those without accumulator due to absorbing function of accumulator. As the frequency of actuator acceleration is increased, the effect of accumulator become very important to decrease the amplitude of pulsatile pressure waveform with high frequencies.

  • In this paper, the nonlinear damping force model is made to identify the properties of the ER damper using higher order spectrum. The higher order spectral analysis is used to investigate the nonlinear frequency coupling phenomena with the damping force signal according to the sinusoidal excitation of the damper. Also, this paper presents an inverse model of the ER damper, i.e., the model can predict the required voltage so that the ER damper can produce the desired force for the requirement of vibration control of vehicle suspension systems. The inverse model has been constructed by using piecewise linear damping force model. In this paper, the fuzzy logic control based on heuristic knowledge is combined with the skyhook control. And it is simulated for a quarter car model. The acceleration of the sprung mass is included in the premise part of the fuzzy rules to reduce the vertical acceleration RMS value of the sprung mass. Then scaling factors and membership functions are tuned using genetic algorithm to obtain optimal performance.

  • There are few earthquake records in Korea and the Japanese or American representative earthquake records have been generally used in the seismic design. In this study, some earthquake records which the range of earthquake magnitudes varies from 5.3 to 7.9 were collected and analyzed to assess which record can rationally reflect Korean seismic characteristics. In this assessment, each seismic energy and acceleration spectrum were analyzed with the unified maximum ground acceleration. Several numerical analyses on Korean representative caisson structures were also carried out to compare each dynamic displacement. In these numerical analyses, soil conditions and the dimension of structure such as height and width were changed. Through this assessment, it is found that the compatible earthquake magnitude in Korea is lower than 7. From the result of numerical analyses, it is shown that horizontal dynamic displacements corresponding to earthquake magnitudes over than 7 are quite larger than those below earthquake magnitude 7. Based on this study, it is necessary that Korean seismic design guideline will refer earthquake magnitude criteria for the construction of the economical aseismic structure.

  • In this study, a square rectangular tall building is considered to investigate the effects of turbulence integral length scale and turbulence intensity on the along-wind responses, across-wind responses and torsional responses of the tall building by Large Eddy Simulation (LES). A recently proposed inflow turbulence generator called the discretizing and synthesizing random flow generation (DSRFG) approach is applied to simulate turbulent flow fields. It has been proved that the approach is able to generate a fluctuating turbulent flow field satisfying any given spectrum, desired turbulence intensity and wind speed profiles. Five profiles of turbulence integral length scale and turbulence intensity are respectively generated for the inflow fields by the DSRFG approach for investigating the effects of turbulence integral length scale and turbulence intensity on the wind-induced responses of the tall building. The computational results indicate that turbulence integral length scale does not have significant effect on the along-wind (displacement, velocity and acceleration) responses, across-wind displacement and velocity responses, while the across-wind acceleration and torsional responses vary without a clear rule with the parameter. On the other hand, the along-wind, across-wind and torsional responses increase with the growth of turbulence intensity.

  • In this paper, the new method that estimates a sensing ability of smart sensor will be proposed. A study is estimation method that evaluates sensing ability about smart sensor respectively. According to acceleration(g) and displacement changing, we estimated sensing ability of smart sensor using SAI(Sensing Ability Index) method respectively. Smart sensors was made fer experiment. The types of smart sensor are two types(hard and soft smart sensor). Smart sensors developed for recognition of material. Experiment and analysis are executed for estimate the SAI method. In develop a smart sensor, the SAI method will be useful for finding optical design condition of smart sensor that can sense a material. And then dynamic characteristics of smart sensors(frequency changing, acceleration changing, critical point, etc.) are evaluated respectively through new method(SAI) that use the power spectrum density. Dynamic characteristic of sensor is evaluated with SAI method relatively. We can use the SAI for finding critical point of smart sensor, too.

  • Several pyrotechnic devices are employed over the course of satellite's missions, generally for the separation of structural subsystems and deployment of appendages. Firing of pyrotechnic devices results in impulsive loads characterized by high peak acceleration and high frequency content which can cause failures of various flight hardware elements and small components. Thus, accurate prediction of acceleration level in various components of spacecraft due to pyrotechnic devices is important. In this paper, two methods for pyroshock prediction, an empirical model and statistical energy analysis in conjunction with virtual mode synthesis, are applied to predict shock response of a low altitude earth observation satellite during launch vehicle separation. The predicted results are then evaluated through comparison with the shock test results.

  • Usually the analyses of structures are carried out by assuming the base of structures to be fixed. However, the soil beneath foundation alters the earthquake loading and varies the response of structure. Hence, it is not realistic to analyze structures by considering it to be fixed. The importance of soil-structure interaction was realized from the past failures of massive structures by neglecting the effect of soil in seismic analysis. The analysis of massive structures requires soil flexibility to be considered to avoid failure and ensure safety. Present study, considers the seismic behavior of multi-storey reinforced concrete narrow and wide buildings of various heights with and without shear wall supported on raft foundation incorporating the effect of soil flexibility. Analysis of the three dimensional models of six different shear wall positions founded on four different soils has been carried out using finite element software LS DYNA. The study investigates the differences in spectral acceleration coefficient (Sa/g), base shear and storey shear obtained following the seismic provisions of Indian standard code IS: 1893 (2002) (IS) and International building code IBC: 2012 (IBC). The base shear values obtained as per IBC provisions are higher than IS values.

  • In order to perform a soil-isolation-structure interaction analysis of seismically isolated nuclear power plant (NPP) structures, the nonlinear behavior of a seismic isolation system may be converted to an equivalent linear model used in frequency domain analysis. Seismic responses for seismically isolated NPP containment structures subjected to a simple artificial acceleration history and different site class earthquakes are evaluated for the equivalent-linear and nonlinear models that have been applied to lead-rubber bearing (LRB) modeling. It can be observed that the maximum displacements of the equivalent linear model are larger than that of the nonlinear model. From the floor response spectrum analysis for the top of NPP containment structures, it can be observed that the spectral acceleration of an equivalent linear model at about 0.5 Hz frequency is about 2~3 times larger than that of a nonlinear model.

  • A Wind and Structural Health Monitoring System (WASHMS) has been installed in the Tsing Ma suspension Bridge in Hong Kong with one of the objectives being the verification of analytical processes used in wind-resistant design. On 2 August 1997, Typhoon Victor just crossed over the Bridge and the WASHMS timely recorded both wind and structural response. The measurement data are analysed in this paper to obtain the mean wind speed, mean wind direction, mean wind inclination, turbulence intensity, integral scale, gust factor, wind spectrum, and the acceleration response and natural frequency of the Bridge. It is found that some features of wind structure and bridge response are difficult to be considered in the currently used analytical process for predicting buffeting response of long suspension bridges, for the Bridge is surrounded by a complex topography and the wind direction of Typhoon Victor changes during its crossing. It seems to be necessary to improve the prediction model so that a reasonable comparison can be performed between the measurement and prediction for long suspension bridges in typhoon prone regions.
