  • A model for the phonon dispersion relationship for cubic zinc sulfide structure, for example SiC, is developed in terms of two unknown force constants. Born model that incorporates bond bending and bond stretching, is used for the force constants. The force constants are determined by fitting to experimental data. Using only the nearest-neighbor coupling results in $6{\times}6$ sized dynamic matrix. The eigenvalues of dynamics matrix for each wavenumber in 3-D ${\kappa}$ space correspond to frequencies, 3 for optical phonon and 3 for acoustic phonon, which is so-called dispersion relation (${\kappa}$-${\omega}$). The density of state is determined by counting the states for each frequency bin, and the properties such as specific heat and thermal conductivity can be obtained. The specific heat is estimated on this model and compared with experiment and other models, i.e. Debye model, Einstein model and combined Debye-Einstein model. In spite of the simple bond potential model, reasonable agreements are found.

  • We introduce the constants E[t, X], CNJ[X] and J[t, X] to describe the asymmetry of the norm. They can be seen as the skew version of the Gao's parameter, von Neumann-Jordan constant and Milman's moduli, respectively. We establish basic properties of these constants, relating them other well known constants, and use these properties to calculate the constants for specific spaces. We then use these constants to study Hilbert spaces, uniformly non-square spaces and their normal structures. With the Banach-Mazur distance, we use them to study isomorphic Banach spaces.

  • Structures in current use are required of weight reduction and strength in many instances. This naturally necessitates frequent applications of composite materials in many areas. Elastic constants are one of key parameters in determining design guidelines for the specific applications of particular materials. In this research two vibratory techniques (acoustic resonance method and impulse technique)are utilized to evaluate elastic constants. Both techniques are suitable for the measurements of dynamic elastic constants. The Impulse technique provides a quick method for the measurement while the acoustic resonance method produces the values of elastic constants which agree better with theoretical values.

  • A reasonable analysis of cutting force in end milling may give much advantage to improvement of productivity and cutting tool life. In order to analyze cutting force, the cutting dynamics was modelled mathematically by using chip load, cutting geometry, and the relationship between cutting forces and the chip load. Specific cutting constants of the cutting dynamics model were obtained by average cutting forces, tool diameter, cutting speed, feed, axial depth, and radial depth of cut. The effects of the cutting conditions on the specific cutting force constants in milling were studied. The model is verified through comparisons of model predicted cutting forces with measured culling forces obtained from machining experiments

  • New chelating ligands, thiocatechol and p-chlorothiocatechol, have been synthesized and the acid dissociation constants were determined by potentiometric method in 50% dioxane-water; $pK_1 \;and\; pK_2$ were 7.28, 10.97 for thiocatechol and 6.37, 10.22 for p-chlorothiocatechol, respectively. Color reactions with various metal ions were studied. It was found that the above ligands are specific for Bi(III), Mo(VI) and W(VI) as an analytical reagent.

  • The kinetics of the interesterification of triolein and stearic acid catalyzed by immobilized Rhizopus delemar lipase were studied in a batch operation. In order to clarify the mechanisms of this reaction, three models are discussed under various conditions in terms of the ratio of triolein and stearic acid. The rate constants involved in the proposed model were determined by combining the numerical Gauss-elemination method, and the trial-and-error method so as to fit the calculated results with the experimental data. The accuracy of the obtained rate constants was confirmed after they were substituted for simultaneous differential equations and the equations simulated using an adaptive step-size Runge-Kutta method. Finally, the model which agrees with the calculated results and the experimental data was selected.

  • In the present study, we proposed a simple ESI-MS model for determining $Zn^{2+}$ binding (or dissociation) constants for zinc finger peptides (ZFPs) with a unique ${\beta}{\beta}{\alpha}$ fold consensus. The ionization efficiency (response) factors for this model, i.e., ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$, could be determined for ZiCo ZFP with a known $Zn^{2+}$ binding constant. We could determine the binding constants for other ZFPs assuming those with a ${\beta}{\beta}{\alpha}$ consensus conformation have the same ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ response ratio. In general, the ZPF dissociation constants exhibited $K_d$ values of $10^{-7}{\sim}10^{-9}M$, while $K_d$ values for a negative control non-specific $Zn^{2+}$ peptides were high, e.g., $5.5{\times}10^{-6}M$ and $4.3{\times}10^{-4}M$ for BBA1 and melittin, respectively.

  • The mechanical characterization of composite materials is nowadays a major interest due to their increasing use in the aeronautic industry. The design of most of these materials is based on their stiffness, which is mainly obtained by means of tensile tests with strain gauge measurement. For thin laminated composites, this classical method requires adequate samples with specific orientation and does not provide all the independent elastic constants. Regarding ultrasonic characterization, especially immersion technique, only one specimen is needed and the entire determination of the stiffness tensor is possible. This paper presents a study of different methods to determine the mechanical properties of transversely isotropic carbon fibre composite materials (gauge and correlation strain measurement during tensile tests, ultrasonic immersion technique). Results are compared to ISO standards and manufacturer data to evaluate the accuracy of these techniques.

  • This paper describes the measurement and analysis of the basic line constants in PLC(Power Line Communication) in the residential building. An apartment is considered as one of the conventional residences to get the line constants in this paper and Agilent 4263B LCR Meter is used to measure the detailed values each area and the specific results and the averaged analysis data are shown in the tables. The measured results no different from the calculated values with using conventional formula due to the line arrangement neglected factors, complex permittivity, and etc. Also, this paper describes many kinds of lines and wiring figures of domestic construction. Finally, it is utilized with the analyzed line characteristics in frequency domain as a planning reference of PLC.

  • The binding of TATA-binding protein (TBP) to the TATA-box containing promoter region is aided by many other transcriptional factors including TFIIA and TFIIB. The mechanistic insight into the assembly of RNA polymerase II preinitation complex (PIC) has been gained by either directly altering a function of target protein or perturbing molecular interactions using drugs, RNAi, or aptamers. Aptamers have been found particularly useful for studying a role of a subset of PIC on transcription for their ability to inhibit specific molecular interactions. One major hurdle to the wide use of aptamers as specific inhibitors arises from the difficulty with traditional assays to validate and determine specificity, affinity, and binding epitopes for aptamers against targets. Here, using a technique called the bio-layer interferometry (BLI) designed for a label-free, real-time, and multiplexed detection of molecular interactions, we studied the assembly of a subset of PIC, TBP binding to TATA DNA, and two distinct classes of aptamers against TPB in regard to their ability to inhibit TBP binding to TFIIA or TATA DNA. Using BLI, we measured not only equilibrium binding constants ($K_D$), which were overall in close agreement with those obtained by electrophoretic mobility shift assay, but also kinetic constants of binding ($k_{on}$ and $k_{off}$), differentiating aptamers of comparable KDs by their difference in binding kinetics. The assay developed in this study can readily be adopted for high throughput validation of candidate aptamers for specificity, affinity, and epitopes, providing both equilibrium and kinetic information for aptamer interaction with targets.
