Mining Spatio-Temporal Patterns in Trajectory Data

  • Spatio-temporal patterns extracted from historical trajectories of moving objects reveal important knowledge about movement behavior for high quality LBS services. Existing approaches transform trajectories into sequences of location symbols and derive frequent subsequences by applying conventional sequential pattern mining algorithms. However, spatio-temporal correlations may be lost due to the inappropriate approximations of spatial and temporal properties. In this paper, we address the problem of mining spatio-temporal patterns from trajectory data. The inefficient description of temporal information decreases the mining efficiency and the interpretability of the patterns. We provide a formal statement of efficient representation of spatio-temporal movements and propose a new approach to discover spatio-temporal patterns in trajectory data. The proposed method first finds meaningful spatio-temporal regions and extracts frequent spatio-temporal patterns based on a prefix-projection approach from the sequences of these regions. We experimentally analyze that the proposed method improves mining performance and derives more intuitive patterns.

  • Little research has been done regarding the explicit and objective analysis and explanation of the spatial logic of traditional Korean settlement patterns, in spite of many archeological and socio-historical studies. In this paper we present research into spatial mechanisms and their social meanings in three traditional villages in the southern province of Korea. Conventional space-syntax analysis of spatial configuration has been used to analysis and investigate the morphological forms and functions of the traditional villages. The research results show that the traditional Korean villages are spatially deeper and syntactically less connected than other comparable urban forms, such as old European cities. Configurational analysis of the three villages reveals that their spatial structures are configured to have their own spatial logic, not a geometric order but a spatial structure. What is however noteworthy is the way they embrace their own environmental context and factors and implement them into the process of urban growth or spatial construction.

Neighborhood Correlation Image Analysis for Change Detection Using Different Spatial Resolution Imagery

  • The characteristics of neighborhood correlation images for change detection were explored at different spatial resolution scales. Bi-temporal QuickBird datasets of Las Vegas, NV were used for the high spatial resolution image analysis, while bi-temporal Landsat $TM/ETM^{+}$ datasets of Suwon, South Korea were used for the mid spatial resolution analysis. The neighborhood correlation images consisting of three variables (correlation, slope, and intercept) were evaluated and compared between the two scales for change detection. The neighborhood correlation images created using the Landsat datasets resulted in somewhat different patterns from those using the QuickBird high spatial resolution imagery due to several reasons such as the impact of mixed pixels. Then, automated binary change detection was also performed using the single and multiple neighborhood correlation image variables for both spatial resolution image scales.

Landscape mosaic pattern analysis system using land cover map for micro-spatial analysis of regional planning (지역계획의 미시적 공간분석을 위한 토지피복도 경관 모자이크 패턴 분석 시스템)

  • Recently, the use of land cover maps has been continuously increasing to analyze spatial patterns such as spatial compositions, functions and changes of landscape mosaics. In this paper, we propose a landscape analysis system that extracts patches, which is an element of landscape mosaics, in the land cover map using region-based image processing technique, and computes patch-based measures at patch level and class level. Also we propose a patch-based spatial pattern that can represent spatial relations using the computed measures. To validate the proposed system's effectiveness, we apply to Gwangju metropolitan city and analyze Gwangju's land use and spatial patterns.

Urban spatial structure change detection in land cover map using time-series patch mapping (시계열 패치 매핑을 이용한 토지피복도의 도시공간구조 변화 검출)

  • In this paper, we propose a system to detect spatial structures in land cover maps and to detect time-series spatial structure changes. At first, the proposed system detects patches in a certain area at different times and calculates their measures to analyse spatial structure patterns of the area. Then the system conducts patch mapping among the detected time-series patches and decides 6 types of patch changes such as keeping, creating, disappearing, splitting, merging, and changing in a mixed way. Also, the system stores the patch-based spatial structure patterns of time-series land cover maps in binary form to extract changes. This demonstrated that the proposed change detection system can be used as a basis for planning the reconstruction of the urban spatial structure by measuring the degree of urban sprawl.

  • Spatial data is collected on a regular Cartesian lattice. In this paper we consider the model indentification of spatial autoregressive(SAR) models using AIC, BIC, pattern method. The proposed methods are considered as an application of AIC, BIC, 3-patterns for SAR models through three directions; row, column and diagonal directions. Using the Monte Carlo simulation, we test the efficiency of the proposed methods for various SAR models.

Spatial Autocorrelation of Disease Prevalence in South Korea Using 2012 Community Health Survey Data (2012년 전국 지역사회 건강조사 자료를 이용한 시·군·구 단위 질병 유병률의 공간 자기상관도에 관한 연구)

  • As a basic research to investigate geographical variations of diseases, this study analyzes and compares spatial patterns of 24 different diseases in South Korea using prevalence rate data provided by Community Health Survey in 2012. Descriptive statistical analysis, global Moran’s I computation, and disease mapping were conducted to examine spatial associations and patterns of each disease. After the unique spatial patterns and distinctive spatial associations of each disease were observed, we concluded that 12 diseases displayed statistically significant spatial autocorrelation while the other 12 showed no spatial associations. This study suggests that diseases are caused by different risk factors and possess different etiological mechanisms. Furthermore, the study may lay foundation for future studies of geographical variations of disease prevalence in South Korea.

Geographically Weighted Regression on the Characteristics of Land Use and Spatial Patterns of Floating Population in Seoul City (서울시 유동인구 분포의 공간 패턴과 토지이용 특성에 관한 지리가중 회귀분석)

  • The key objective of this research is to review the effectiveness of spatial regression to identify the influencing factors of spatial distribution patterns of floating population. To this end, global and local spatial autocorrelation test were performed using seoul floating population survey(2014) data. The result of Moran's I and Getis-Ord $Gi^*$ as used in the analysis derived spatial heterogeneity and spatial similarities of floating population patterns in a statistically significant range. Accordingly, Geographically Weighted Regression was applied to identify the relationship between land use attributes and population floating. Urbanization area, green tract of land of micro land cover data were aggregated in to $400m{\times}400m$ grid boundary of Seoul. Additionally public transportation variables such as intersection density transit accessibility, road density and pedestrian passage density were adopted as transit environmental factors. As a result, the GWR model derived more improved results than Ordinary Least Square(OLS) regression model. Furthermore, the spatial variation of applied local effect of independent variables for the floating population distributions.

Spatial Distribution Patterns of International Physical Distribution through Clearance Depot (통관거점을 이용한 국제물류의 공간적 분포 패턴)

  • This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution pattern of international trade. The method is to analyze the principal components by changing interaction attribute matrix of four dimensions (hinterland, gateway, foreland and commodities) into two dimension matrix. The study area is the territory region of Cheongju clearance depot in inland. The result are as follows : Major spatial patterns of regional connections by hinterland, gateway and foreland are, in the case of exports, ten patterns and in the case of imports come to nine. Composition of major export and import commodities in Cheongju clearance depot are similar, but precision instrument manufactured commodity and nonmetal mineral are remarkable in export and mineral manufactured commodity machinery and electronic manufactured commodity are remarkable in import. Gateway are similar to export and import, but Incheon international airport is used more in the case of import. And Cheongiu international airport is used for some commodities and is remarkable as a foreland of import for the areas outside of Chungcheongbuk-do.

Mathematically Gifted Students' Justification Patterns and Mathematical Representation on a Task of Spatial Geometry (수학영재들의 아르키메데스 다면체 탐구 과정 - 정당화 과정과 표현 과정을 중심으로 -)

  • The aims of this study is figure out the characteristics of justification patterns and mathematical representation which are derived from 14 mathematically gifted middle school students in the process of solving the spatial tasks on Archimedean solid. This study shows that mathematically gifted students apply different types of justification such as empirical, or deductive justification and partial or whole justification. It would be necessary to pay attention to the value of informal justification, by comparing the response of student who understood the entire transformation process and provided a reasonable explanation considering all component factors although presenting informal justification and that of student who showed formalization process based on partial analysis. Visual representation plays an valuable role in finding out the Idea of solving the problem and grasping the entire structure of the problem. We found that gifted students tried to create elaborated symbols by consolidating mathematical concepts into symbolic re-presentations and modifying them while gradually developing symbolic representations. This study on justification patterns and mathematical representation of mathematically gifted students dealing with spatial geometry tasks provided an opportunity for understanding their the characteristics of spacial geometrical thinking and expending their thinking.
