  • The external, unbonded prestressed concrete(PSC) members exhibit very different structural behavior from that of internal bonded PSC members because of eccentricity change and slip occurrence during loading process. The purpose of the present study is to propose the ultimate failure stresses of prestressing (PS) steels for those external unbonded PSC members. To this end, a comprehensive analysis has been made using the nonlinear finite element analysis program developed recently for external unbonded PSC members by authors. A series of major influencing variables have been included in the analysis. It was found that the span-depth ratio, neutral axis depth-effective depth ratio, load geometry, amount of ordinary steel, and prestressing steel ration have great influence for the ultimate failue stress of PS steel is preposed and is compared with experimental dat as well as existing formulas for internal unbonded members. The Comparison indicates that the proposed equation agrees relatively well with experimental data and that existing formulas including ACI and AASHTO equations show some discrepancies from experimental ones. The present study allows more realistic analysis and design of prestressed concrete structures with external unbonded tendons.

  • The turbulent viscous wake flows behind a single airfoil, two-dimensional stationary blade row and three-dimensional rotating blade row were calculated, and the numerical results were compared with experimental ones. The numerical technique was based on the SIMPLE algorithm using three turbulent closure models, standard k-.epsilon. model(WFM), low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. model(LRN) and Reynolds stress model (RSM). In the case of a single airfoil, WFM, LRN and RSM presented fairly good velocity distributions in the wake compared with experimental data. In the case of the stationary blade row, LRN and RSM presented better results than WFM for wake velocity distribution, and especially LRN showed best results among these three turbulent models. In the case of the rotating blade row, WFM and LRN showed fairly good agreement with experimental data of the three-dimensional velocity component distributions in the range from hub to mid span region. LRN was also superior to WFM in accuracy of prediction for the wake velocity distribution as same with the cases of a airfoil and the stationary blade row.

  • Accurately estimating survival times in terminal cancer patients is very difficult for palliative care clinicians. But a reasonably accurate estimate of survival would permit the medical team to : Plan the ideal therapeutic strategy between overtreatment and too early discontinuation of specific therapy. Answer any questions asked by the patient or family. Organize adequate assistance for the patient concerned. Decide on the eligibility of the patient for clinical trials and whether to begin a treatment, the effects of which will not be immediate. This case was a 79 year-old male patient with colon cancer. He complained of dry mouth, anorexia, weight loss and showed KPS $40{\sim}50$ on admission day. 40 days later he died. To improve patient/family quality of life, it is necessary to improve the ability to estimate accurately a patient's length of survival.

  • The use of recycled-aggregate concrete is increasing faster than the development of appropriate design recommendations. In addition, recycled-aggregate and higher compressive strengths are two of the most desired characteristics to improve the use of concrete as a construction material. The paper reports limited experimental data on the shear capacity of high-strength recycled aggregate concrete beams. Ten beams were tested to determine their diagonal cracking and ultimate shear capacities. The variable in the test program were concrete strength(300, 500 and 700kgf/$cm^{2}$), and shear span/depth ratio (a/d : 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0). Test results indicate that the ACI Building code prediction of Eq.(11-3) and (11-5) for high-strength recycled aggregate concretes are unconservative for all beams (with concrete strength 300, 500 and 700kgf/$cm^{2}$, a/d ratios 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0). But Zsutty Equation for high-strength recycled aggregate concretes is conservative for all beams. The results of the experimental investigation on the cracking patterns for beams show that the angle that the critical inclined crack makes with the horizontal axis decreases with increasing a/d.

  • Significant research efforts were undertaken to evaluate seismic performance of vertically irregular buildings on flat ground. However, there is scarcity of study on seismic performance of buildings on hill slopes. The present study attempts to investigate seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete irregular stepback building frames with different configurations on sloping ground. Based on extensive regression study of free vibration results of four hundred seventeen frames with varying ground slope, number of story and span number, a modification is proposed to the code based empirical fundamental time period estimation formula. The modification to the fundamental time period estimation formula is a simplified function of ground slope and a newly introduced equivalent height parameter to reflect the effect of stiffness and mass irregularity. The derived empirical formula is successfully validated with various combinations of slope and framing configurations of buildings. The correlation between the predicted and the actual time period obtained from the free vibration analysis results are in good agreement. The various statistical parameters e.g., the root mean square error, coefficient of determination, standard average error generally used for validation of such regression equations also ensure the prediction capability of the proposed empirical relation with reasonable accuracy.

  • The in vitro skin permeability of 16 drugs with a wide span of lipophilicity (log P ranging from -0,95 to 4.40) was evaluated with an ethanol/panasate 800 (tricaprylin, P-800) (40/60) lipophilic binary vehicle and an ethanol/water (60/40) hydrophilic binary vehicle with lauric acid, The skin permeability of the drugs was enhanced by the use of the ethanol/P-800 (40/60) binary vehicle or the ethanol/water (60/40) binary vehicle with lauric acid; permeation rate was increased and lag time' was decreased. The relationship between lipophilicity and skin permeation rate of the drugs showed parabolic shapes with their peaks at much greater hydrophilic range compared with other past references. In the in vivo skin absorption of theophylline using abdominal rat skin, the ethanol/P-800 (40/60)-7% (w/w) ethycellulose gel produced a good feature as a sustained-release preparation, and the ethanol/water (60/40)-3 % (w/w) HPMC gel with lauric acid showed the highest BA value. The results suggest that the lipophilicity of a drug is a main factor for prediction of the skin permeability of the drug and that the ethanol/P-800 (40/60) binary vehicle and ethanol/water (60/40) binary vehicle with lauric acid would be good candidates for clinical transdermal application of hydrophilic drugs.

  • The wind resistant design of long-span bridges has urged a special attention to the prevention of the flutter occurrence Therefore calculation of flutter derivatives is indispensable to this prediction. A used system identification method must identify all the flutter derivatives from noisy experimental data In this paper MITD(Modified Ibrahim Tim Domain) method and AKF (Adaptive Kalman Filter) method are applied to extract flutter derivatives from section-model tests. The robustness and reliability of proposal SI methods under a high signal-to-noise ratio is demonstrated through numerical simulation for windtunnel test.

  • This paper predicted the shear deformation, such as strain of shear reinforcement and shear track width, of reinforced concrete (RC) members using Transformation Angle Truss Model (TATM) in order to apply to the shea, analysis of RC buildings. To check the validity of TATM for the shear deformation of RC beams, four RC beams with different shear span-to-depth ratios were cast, instrumented and tested. Observed results were compared with theoretical results by MCFT(Response-2000), RA-STM, FA-STM, and TATM. The proposed model, TATM, better predicted the relationships of the shear stress-strain of shear reinforcement and the shear stress-shear track width than other truss models.

  • Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) has been widely used in long-span buildings because of its light weight and high transparency. This paper studies the short and long term creep behaviour of ETFE foil. A series of short-term creep and recovery tests were performed, in which the residual strain was observed. A long-term creep test of the ETFE foil was also performed over 110 days. A viscoelastic-plastic model was then established to describe the short-term creep and recovery behaviour. The model contains a traditional multi-Kelvin part and an added steady-flow component to represent the viscoelastic and viscoplastic behaviour, respectively. The model successfully fit the data for three stresses and six temperatures. Additionally, time-temperature equivalency was adopted to predict the long-term creep behaviour of ETFE foil. Horizontal shifting factors were determined from the process of shifting creep-curves at six temperatures. The long-term creep behaviours at three temperatures were predicted. Finally, the long-term creep test showed that the short-term creep test at identical temperatures insufficiently predicted additional creep behaviour, and the long-term test verified the horizontal shifting factors derived from the time-temperature equivalency.
