  • In long-haul optical communication system consisting of standard single-mode fiber spans and fiber amplifiers, such as the erbium-doped fiber amplifier, performance is deteriorated by signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinearity of the fiber. A combination of dispersion management and optical phase conjugation is an effective technique to compensate for the distortion. In an optical link configured by this combination, a dispersion map mainly affects the compensation of the distorted optical signals. This paper proposes new dispersion maps configured by the decaying or expanding distribution of residual dispersion per span (RDPS) in a dispersion-managed link combined with a midway optical phase conjugator. The effect of the proposed dispersion maps on the compensation for distorted 24 channel × 40 Gbps wavelength-division multiplexed signals was assessed through numerical simulation. It was confirmed that all the proposed dispersion maps are most appropriate for the compensation and, furthermore, for the flexibility of link configuration than conventional links.

  • Reinforced concrete haunched beams have been used for enhancement of shear resistance of beams to avoid the stress concentration. But American and British codes do not give my formula for the design of haunched beams. The purpose of this research is to experimentally investigate the shear failure of reinforced concrete punched beams for various haunch inclinations and shear span-to-depth ratios. The experimental results showed that even though shear behavior of haunched beam were similar to that of resembled rectangular beams, shear span-to-depth ratios and inclinations of haunch had effects on shear cracking strength.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams according to small shear span-depth ratio between a/d=1.5, 2.8, 3.6. In general, shear strength of reinforced concrete beams is dependent on the compressive strength of concrete the longitudinal steel ratio, the shear span-depth ratio and shear reinforcement. The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural and diagonal cracking, crack patterns, fracture modes. The load versus strain and load versus deflection relations were obtained from the static test. The test results on shear strength were compared with results obtained by the formulas of ACI code 318-95. The shear strength of reinforced concrete beams exceeded those predicted following present ACI code 318-95(11-6).

  • The present work is concerned with a numerical investigation of the behaviour of reinforced-concrete beams with non-bonded flexural tension reinforcement. The numerically-established behaviour of such beams with and without transverse reinforcement is compared with its counterpart of similar beams with bonded reinforcement. From the comparison, it is found that the development of bond anywhere within the shear span inevitably leads to inclined cracking which is the cause of 'shear' failure. On the other hand, the lack of bond within the shear span of the beams is found, not only to prevent cracking within the shear span, but, also, to lead to a flexural type of failure preceded by the formation of horizontal splitting of concrete in the compressive zone. It is also found that delaying the extension of horizontal splitting through the provision of transverse reinforcement in the beam mid span can lead to flexural failure after yielding of the tension reinforcement. Yielding of the tension reinforcement before the horizontal splitting of the compressive zone may also be achieved by reducing the amount of the latter reinforcement.

  • By using the nonlinear aerostatic stability theory together with the method of mean wind decomposition, a method for nonlinear aerostatic stability analysis is proposed for long-span suspension bridges under yaw wind. A corresponding program is developed considering static wind load nonlinearity and structural nonlinearity. Taking a suspension bridge with three towers and double main spans as an example, the full range aerostatic instability is analyzed under wind at different attack angles and yaw angles. The results indicate that the lowest critical wind speed of aerostatic instability is gained when the initial yaw angle is greater than $0^{\circ}$, which suggests that perhaps yaw wind poses a disadvantage to the aerostatic stability of a long span suspension bridge. The results also show that the main span in upstream goes into instability first, and the reason for this phenomenon is discussed.

  • Accurately determining the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a structural floor is an essential step to assess the floor's human-induced vibration serviceability. In the theoretical analysis, the prestressed concrete floor can be idealized as a multi-span continuous anisotropic plate. This paper presents a new analytical approach to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a multi-span continuous orthotropic plate. The suggested approach is based on the combined modal and perturbation method, which differs from other approaches as it decomposes the admissible functions defining the mode shapes by considering the intermodal coupling. The implementation of this technique is simple, requiring no tedious mathematical calculations. The perturbation solution is validated with the numerical results.

  • Using mixed nonionic surfactants Span/Tween, we investigated the effects of HLB value on the O/W emulsion stability and rheological behaviors. In this study, MS-01 (Span 60 & Tween 60) and MS-02 (Span 80 & Tween 80) was used as mixed nonionic surfactants. We considered required HLB value 10.85 and selected corresponding HLB value range 8-13. The droplet size distributions, droplet morphology, rheological properties, zeta-potential and creaming index of the emulsion samples were obtained to understand the mechanism and interaction of droplets in O/W emulsion. The results indicated that optimal HLB number for O/W emulsions was 10.8 and 10.7, while using MS-01 surfactant and MS-02 surfactant respectively. MS-01 (HLB = 10.8) sample and MS-02 (HLB = 10.7) sample showed smallest droplet size and highest zeta-potential value. Rheological properties are measured to understand rheological behaviors of emulsion samples. All emulsion samples showed no phase separation until 30 days storage time at $25^{\circ}C$.

  • The existing evaluation method could not apply the effect of zero span tension generated in the waterproofing layer attached to the surface of the structure at the moment of cracking as the waterproofing layer was constructed in the state where the cracks were formed. The test apparatus developed through this study is expected to be able to conduct tests closer to the environment occurring in actual structures as it is possible to simultaneously create a pressurized (constrained) condition and an environment for zero span tension.

  • Lightness and flexibility of membrane roofs make them very sensitive to any external load. One of the most important parameters that controls their behavior, especially under wind load is the sag/span ratio of edge cables. Based on the value of the pretension force in the edge cables and the horizontal projection of the actual area covered by the membrane, an optimized design range of cable sag/span ratios has been determined through carrying on several membrane form-finding analyses. Fully coupled fluid structure dynamic analyses of these membrane roofs are performed under wind load with several conditions using the CFD method. Through investigating the numerical results of these analyses, the behavior of membrane roofs with cables sag/span ratios selected from the previously determined optimized design range has been evaluated.
