  • One hundred and eighty, 1-day old broiler chicks, randomly divided into 15 replicates of 10 brids each were employed to six treatment rations (A, B, C, D, E and F). Rapeseed meal (RSM) with or without treatment was incorporated in the rations at 20 percent level in lieu of soybean meal. The birds in group A were fed soybean based ration and those in group B, C, D, E and F were given ration containing untreated, solvent extracted, water treated, autoclaved and ferrous sulphate treated RSM, respectively. Presence of RSM in the rations whether untreated or treated, significantly reduced weight gain and feed consumption of the birds compared with those of control group but efficiency of feed utilization, dressed weight, dressing percentage and weights of internal organs amongst the groups remained unaffected. The size of thyroid galnds of the broilers using the meal was significantly larger than those having ration without RSM. The only exception was that the birds having solvent extracted meal had similar thyroid gland relative weight as those of control group indicating reduced antinutritional effect of isothiocyanates content due to solvent extraction of the meal.

  • Polyisocyanurate has been obtained from toluene diisocyanate(TDI) in the presence of potassium octoate catalyst and the effects of water and butanol in solvent were studied for the determination of the change of viscosity, the reaction time (length of time required for 5 poise of viscosity of product), molecular dispersity of product, and TDI conversion. When butyl acetate contains 0.1% of water by weight, uretidione was formed and a higher conversion was obtained at the condition. The uretidione was not formed by adding butanol to the solvent. At a higher concentration of butanol, a higher TDI conversion and a wider molecular dispersity were obtained.

  • The increase of B-type hydrogen bonding character between the hydrogen atom($H{\gamma}$) of methylene group in 1-(phenoxymethyl)benzotriazole (1) and 1-(thiophenoxymetyl)benzotriazole (2) derivatives, and solvents was caused by some factors such as;electron withdrawing strength (${\rho} > 0$) of X-substituent; local diamagnetic effect by Y atom (Y = O(1) > S(2)) with adjacent methylene group; and solvent polarity parameter ($E_T$ = Kcal/mol; acetone; 42.2 > chloroform; 39.0). From the basis on the findings, linear free energy relationship (LFER) components on the substituent chemical shift of methylene group ($CH_2-SCS$) in (1) exhibited a tendency that resonance(R)-effect was much larger than field(F) (or inductive(I))-effect in acetone and that the electrical effects were depend upon the solvent.

  • The effects of a neutral solvent of dioctyl phthalate (DOP) on the phase behavior of symmetric polystyrene-block-poly(n-butyl methacrylate) copolymers (PS-b-PnBMA) were assessed herein. Closed-loop phase behavior with a lower disorder-to-order transition (LDOT) and an upper order-to-disorder transition (UODT) was observed for PS-b-PnBMA/DOP solution when the quantity of DOP was carefully controlled. When the molecular weight of PS-b-PnBMA became larger, the LDOT did not appreciably change at smaller quantities of DOP. With larger quantities of DOP, the reduction in the UODT is greater than the increase in the LDOT. This behavior is discussed in accordance with a molecular theory predicated on a compressible random-phase approximation.

  • This study was directed to finding an optimum extraction condition of genistein from the S. flavescens with supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent. In this effort, effects of the extraction conditions including pressure, temperature and a co-solvent on the extraction efficiency were investigated. The aqueous ethanol and methanol solutions were used as co-solvents while the tested operating pressure and temperature ranges were from 200 bar to 300 bar and from 308.15 K to 323.15 K, respectively. The concentration of genistein was determined by means of HPLC equipped with a UV detector. From the results, it was observed that an increase in pressure led to the higher extraction efficiency. Further, methanol showed better performance as a co-slovent than ethanol. The DPPH radical scavenging activities were measured to compare antioxidant activities of S. flavescens extracts.

  • The maximum absorption wavelengths of charge-transfer complexes of naphthalene, ${\alpha}-and{\beta}-methyl$ naphthalene and 1,2-, 2,3-and 2,6-dimethyl naphthalene with chloranil have been measured with a UV spectrophotometer in ethylene chloride, methylene chloride, and chloroform at 10, 15, 20, and 25$^{\circ}C$. This absorption band was interpreted as the charge transfer band of a 1 : 1 molecular complex, and the maximum absorption wavelength was changed as a function of solvent and temperature. Their formation constants (K$_f$) were decreased with the polarity of solvent and the increase of temperature. Thus, the influences of solvent and temperature on the formation constant have been discussed as consideration of thermodynamic properties, and the electronic and steric effects of electron donors on formation constant have been also discussed.

  • Biodegradable microspheres were prepared with poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA, 75 : 25 by mole ratio) by an oil/oil solvent evaporation method for the sustained release of anti-AIDS virus agent, AZT The microspheres of relatively narrow size distribution (7.6$\pm$ 3.8 ㎛) were obtained by controlling the fabrication conditions. The shape of microspheres prepared was smooth and spherical. The efficiency of AZT loading into the PLGA microsphere was over 93% compared to that below 15% for microspheres by a conventional water/oil/water method. The effects of Preparation conditions on the morphology and in vitro AZT release pattern were investigated. in vitro release studies showed that different release pattern and release rates could be achieved by simply modifying factors in the fabrication conditions such as the type and amount of surfactant, initial amount of loaded drug, the temperature of solvent evaporation, and so on. PLCA microspheres prepared by 5% of initial drug loading, 1.0% (w/w) of surfactant concentration, and 25$\^{C}$ of solvent evaporation temperature were free from initial burst effect and a near-zero order sustained release was observed. Possible mechanisms of the near-zero order sustained release for our system have been proposed.

  • Polymeric fibers with nanometer-scale diameters are produced by electrospinning. When the electrical forces at the surface of a polymer solution or melt overcome the surface tension then electrospinning occurs. Polycarbonate has been electrospun. Electrospun fibers are observed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The surface morphology of e-spun fiber has been studied by many variables that are involved in different polymer concentrations, solvent mixing ratios and ambient parameters. The average diameters of the electrospun fibers range from 200 nm to 4,570 nm when the PC concentration is decreasing from 15.5\;wt{\%}\;to\;25\;wt{\%}.$ The higher concentration of the polymer solution makes the fibers thicker due to preventing the fiber stretching. With respect evaporation effects, the solvent mixing ratios cause significant changes of the fiber size distribution. As a matter of fact the fiber diameter steadily increases with increasing amount of DMF until the solvent mixture is at THF:DMF ratio of 60:40.

  • This article describes the metal ions adsorption of chitosan fibers. The chitosan fibers were manufactured by wet spinning using 2% acetic acid as solvent, 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide as non solvent, and 4%chitosan solution as a solvent. The adsorption characteristics of chitosan fibers towards 100ppm solutions of various metal ions such as Cu(II), Cd(II), Cr(III), Hg(II) were examined at different pH value by ICP-Atomic Emission Spectrometer. The adhesiveness of metallic ions to the chitosan fiber were increased with the increase of pH and the decrease of denier. On the other hand, from pH4, chitosan fiber that is immersed in metal ion aqueous solution of Cu(II) and Cd(II) became homogeneous solution because is dissolved. The adhesiveness of metallic ions to chitosan fiber were found to increased in a sequence of Hg(II)> Cr(III)> Cu(II)> Cd(II). The antimicrobial characteristics of the chitosan fiber by adhered metal ions, virgin chitosan fiber, and cotton fiber were evaluated. The antimicrobial activity of the fibers were increased with the decrease of denier.

  • A solvent free, highly concentrated silica-acryl monomer hybrid sol was synthesized using aqueous colloidal silica as a precursor. The effects of the silica particle size, type of surface treatment agent employed, and silica content on the formation of the hybrid sol were systematically studied. The optical and physical properties of the coating solution prepared using the hybrid sol were also characterized. The viscosity of the hybrid sol tended to decrease as the particle size of the silica and the molecular weight of the surface treatment agent increased. The PET substrate coated with MPTMS-Mix (mixture, 70 wt%) solution showed the highest surface hardness (6 H) and low surface roughness ($Ra=0.044{\mu}m$), which could be attributed to an increase in packing density caused by the infiltration of small particles into the pores formed between larger particles.
