  • A defect model for UO22 fuel containing soluble fission products was devised based on the defect structure of pure and doped uranias. Using the equilibrium between fuel solid-solution and fission-products and the material balance within the fuel, a tracing method to get the stoichiometry change of urania fuel with burnup was made. This tracing method was applied to high burnup urania fuel and DUPIC fuel. The oxygen potential of urania fuel turned out to increase slightly with burnup. The stoichiometry change was calculated to be negligible due to the buffering role f Mo. The oxygen potential of DUPIC fuel out to be sensitive to the initial chemical state of Mo in the fuel.

  • We previously reported that the extract of unripe cotton ball of Gossypium indicum shows cytotoxic activity and induces an apoptosis in vitro. In present study, its antitumor activity was investigated in vivo. Butanol soluble extract of unripe cotton ball reduced the weight of solid tumor in sarcoma 180 transplanted mouse model. It showed stronger activity than that of Krestin.

  • Organic kiwifruits were smaller fruit size but had higher magnesium and dry matter content than conventional, meanwhile, fruit soluble solid content was similar to conventional. There were no significant difference in polyphenol contents and antioxidative capacity between organic and conventional although there were considerable variations among sample orchards. Several minerals were also similar levels in both systems.

  • A novel poly[9,10-diphenylanthracene-4',4"-ylenevinylene-3,6-(N-2-ethyl hexyl)carbazole] containing alternate diphenylanthracene and carbazole unit was synthesized by the Wittig reaction. The obtained polymer was soluble in common organic solvents and thermally stable up to 380 C. The polymer gives rise to bright blue fluorescence both in solution and in thin solid films. The light emitted from the device (ITO/polymer/Al) was greenish-blue in color and clearly visible in daylight.

  • The viscosity for hi-solid pressure sensitive adhesive to improve water soluble low viscosity pressure sensitive adhesive polymerized using seeded polymerization. While seed binder polymerizing it produces an optimum polymerization condition, and acrylic acid and seed binder concentration changed were measurement of viscosity variation and adhesive power at the substrate (SUS420J) as flowing results. In adhesive polymerization, seed binder concentration 7 wt%/monomer was recovered 60% of solid content, 2,100 cps of low viscosity and clear adhesive film. When acrylic acid content was 4 wt%/monomer, it was turned excellent adhesive power and holding power.

  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of temperature and solid retention time (SRT) on membrane fouling in a membrane bioreactors (MBRs). For this purpose, a lab-scale submerged MBR system was used. This system operated at two SRTs of 15 and 5 days, three various temperatures (20, 25 and 30C) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 h. The results indicated that decreased the cake layer resistance and increased particles size of foulant due to increasing temperature and SRT. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis show that the cake layer formed on the membrane surface, contained high levels of proteins and especially polysaccharides in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) but absorbance intensity of EPS functional groups decreased with temperature and SRT. EEM analysis showed that the peak on the range of Ex/Em=220-240/350-400 in SRT of 15 and temperature of 30C indicates the presence of fulvic acid in the cake. In addition, as the temperature rise from 20 to 30C, concentration of soluble microbial products (SMP) increased and COD removal reached 89%. Furthermore, the rate of membrane fouling was found to increase with decreasing temperature and SRT.

  • To increase the dissolution rate of practically insoluble biphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate (DDB), various solid dispersions were prepared with water soluble carriers, such as povidone (PVP K-30), poloxamer 407, sodium deoxycholate (SDC) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000, at drug to carrier ratios of 1:3, 1:5 and 1:10 (w/w) by solvent or fusion method. Dissolution test was performed by the paddle method. The dissolution rate of DDB tablets (25 mg) on market was found to be very low (11.44, 9.02 and 6.42% at pH 1.2, 4.0 and 6.5 after 120 min, respectively). However, dissolution rates of DDB from various solid dispersions were very fast and reached supersaturation within 10 min. DDB-PEG 6000 solid dispersion appeared to be better in enhancing the in vitro dissolution rate than others. Furthermore, the incorporation of DDB and phosphatidylcholine (PC) into βcyclodextrin at ratios of 1:2:20, 1:5:20 and 1:10:20 resulted in a 4.9-, 11.2- and 19.6-fold increase in DDB dissolution after 120 min as compared with the pure drug, respectively. This might be attributed to the formation of lipid vesicles which entrapped a certain concentration of DDB during dissolution. On the other hand, the permeation of DDB through rabbit duodenal mucosa was examined using some enhancers such as SDC, sod. glycocholate (SGC) and glycyrrhizic acid ammonium salt (GAA). Only trace amounts of DDB were found to permeate through deuodenal mucosa in the absence of enhancer. SDC was found to markedly decrease the permeation flux of DDB, however, SGC and GAA (5 mM) enhanced the flux of DDB 1.6 and 2.4 times higher as compared with no additive, respectively.

  • Solid dispersions of poorly water-soluble drug, sibutramine, were prepared with hydrophilic polymer, poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone (PVP), hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) and organic acid, citric acid, to improve the solubility of drug. Physicochemical variation and shape of microsphere were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Microspheres containing additives showed more spherical shape than non additive microspheres. In vitro release behavior of microspheres presented at simulated gastric fluid (pH 1.2) and simulated intestinal fluid (pH 6.8). The solid dispersion form transformed the drug into an amorphous state and dramatically improved its dissolution rate. These data suggest that the solid dispersion technique is an effective approach for developing the appetite depressant drug products and various pharmaceutical excipients are able to control the release behaviors.
