This study presents 0-dimensional model for solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs). The physics of the cell and the simplifying assumptions are presented, and only hydrogen participates in the electrochemical reaction. The electrical potential is predicted using this model. The Butler-Volmer equation is used to describe the activation polarization and the exchange current density is changed according to the partial pressure of reactants and the temperature. The electrical conductivities of electrodes and an electrolyte are calculated for the ohmic polarization. Material characteristics and temperature affect those factors. Analysis of concentration polarization based on transport of gaseous species through porous electrodes is incorporated in this model. Both binary diffusion and Knudsen diffusion are considered as the diffusion mechanism. For validation, simulation results at this work are compared with our experimental results and numerical results by other researchers.

This paper summarized concept, manufacture and results of the micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The cells were fabricated by co-sintering of extruded micro-tubular anode support and electrolyte coating layer, and then additional cathode coating. The cells showed quick voltage rising within 1 minute, and the electrochemical performances were closely related to the balance of fuel utilization and performance loss. And a thermal-fluid simulation model was also reported in combination with the electrochemical evaluation results on the GDC-based micro-tubular SOFCs.
Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) show promise for improving the lithium ion battery safety. However, due to oxidation of the PEO group and corrosion of the Al current collector, PEO-based SPEs have not previously been effective for use in $LiCoO_2$ (LCO) cathode materials at room temperature. In this paper, a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) PEO-based SPE was applied to examine the performance of a LCO/SPE/Li metal cell at different voltage ranges. The results indicate that the SPE can be applied to LCO-based lithium polymer batteries with high electrochemical performance. By using a carbon-coated aluminum current collector, the Al corrosion was mostly suppressed during cycling, resulting in improvement of the cell cycle stability.
Solid oxide fuel cells are clean, pollution-free technology for the electrochemical generation of electricity at high efficiency. Specially, the polarization resistance between electrolyte and electrode of SOFC unit cell is of importance, because it is desirable to develop SOFC operating at intermediate temperature below $800^{\circ}C$. The LSCF cathode prepared using modified oxalate method was investigated with different electrolyte. A precursor was prepared with oxalic acid, ethanol and $NH_4OH$ solution. The LSCF precursor was prepared at $80^{\circ}C$, and pH control was 2, 6, 8, 9 and 10. The precursor powder was calcined at $800^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1200^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs. The crystal of LSCF powders show single phase at pH 2, 6, 8 and 9, and the average particle size was about $3{\mu}m$. The LSCF cathode with heat treatment at $1200^{\circ}C$ showed a plot of electric conductivity versus temperature. Unit cell prepared from the LSCF cathode, buffer layer between cathode and electrolyte and the LSGM, YSZ, ScSZ and CeSZ electrolyte. Also interface reaction between LSCF, buffer layer and electrolyte were measured by EPMA and the polarization resistance for unit cell with cycle measure using a Solatron 1260 analyzer.
The electrolyte is an important component in determining the performance of Fuel Cells. Especially, investigation of the conduction properties of electrolytes plays a key role in determining the performance of the electrolyte. The electrochemical properties of Yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ) were measured to allow the use of this material as an electrolyte for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) in the temperature range of $700-1000^{\circ}C$ and in $0.21{\leq}pO_2/atm{\leq}10^{-23}$. A Hebb-Wagner polarization experimental cell was optimally manufactured; here we discuss typical problems associated with making cells. The partial conductivities due to electrons and holes for 8YSZ, which is known as a superior oxygen conductor, were obtained using I-V characteristics based on the Hebb-Wagner polarization method. Activation energies for holes and electrons are $3.99{\pm}0.17eV$ and $1.70{\pm}0.06eV$ respectively. Further, we calculated the oxygen ion conductivity with electron, hole, and total conductivity, which was obtained by DC four probe conductivity measurements. The oxygen ion conductivity was dependent on the temperature; the activation energy was $0.80{\pm}0.10eV$. The electrolyte domain was determined from the top limit, bottom limit, and boundary (p=n) of the oxygen partial pressure. As a result, the electrolyte domain was widely presented in an extensive range of oxygen partial pressures and temperatures.
Decalcomania is a new method for SOFCs (solid oxide fuel cells) unit cell fabrication. A tight and dense $5{\mu}m$ Yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) electrolyte layer on anode substrate was fabricated by the decalcomania method. After 8YSZ as the electrolyte starting material was calcined at $1200^{\circ}C$, the particle size was controlled by the attrition mill. The median particle size (D50) of each 8YSZ was $39.6{\mu}m$, $9.30{\mu}m$, $6.35{\mu}m$, and $3.16{\mu}m$, respectively. The anode substrate was coated with decalcomania papers which were made by using 8YSZ with different median particle sizes. In order to investigate the effect of median particle sizes and sintering conditions on the electrolyte density, each sample was sintered for 2, 5 and 10 h, respectively. 8YSZ with a median particle size of $3.16{\mu}m$ which was sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 10 had the highest density. With this 8YSZ, a SOFCs unit cell was manufactured with a $5{\mu}m$ layer by the decalcomania method. Then the unit cell was run at $800^{\circ}C$. The Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) and Maximum power density (MPD) was 1.12 V and $650mW/cm^2$, respectively.
Technologies for lithium secondary batteries are now increasingly expanding to simultaneously improve the safety and higher energy and power densities of large-scale battery systems, such as electric vehicles and smart-grid energy storage systems. Next-generation lithium batteries, such as lithium-sulfur (Li-S) and lithium-air (Li-O2) batteries by adopting solid electrolytes and lithium metal anode, can be a solution for the requirements. In this analysis of battery technology trends, solid electrolytes, including polymer (organic), inorganic (oxides and sulfides), and their hybrid (composite) are focused to describe the electrochemical performance achievable by adopting optimal components and discussing the interfacial behaviors that occurred by the contact of different ingredients for safe and high-energy lithium secondary battery systems. As next-generation rechargeable lithium batteries, Li-S and Li-O2 battery systems are briefly discussed coupling with the possible use of solid electrolytes. In addition, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institutes achievements in the field of solid electrolytes for lithium rechargeable batteries are finally introduced.
Performance of single cell at solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system is largely affected by electrocatalytic and thermal properties of cathode. Samarium-based perovskite oxide material is recently recognized as promising cathode material for intermediate temperature-operating SOFC due to its high electrocatalytic property. Perovskite structured $Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ and its composite material, $Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}/Sm_{0.2}Ce_{0.8}O_{1.9}$ were investigated in terms of area specific resistance (ASR), thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), thermal cycling and long term performance. $Sm_{0.2}Ce_{0.8}O_{1.9}$ was used as electrolyte material. Electrochemical ac impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and dilatometer were used to measure the cathodic properties. Composite cathode ($Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$: $Sm_{0.2}Ce_{0.8}O_{1.9}$ = 6:4) showed a good ASR of 0.13${\Omega}$$cm^2$ at 650$^{\circ}C$ and its TEC value was 12.3${\times}$10-6/K at 600$^{\circ}C$ which is similar to the value of ceria-based electrolyte of 11.9${\times}$10-6/K. Performance of composite cathode was maintained with no degradation even after 13 times thermal cycle test.
