Mussels are stubborn organism attached to solid substrate by byssus threads and caused operational problems in utility of power generating stations. Sole and combined usage of ultrasonic (28 kHz- and 42 kHz- frequencies) and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) has studied for control of blue mussel larvae and adult stage in seawater condition. A theoretical wo rking model using disinfection (Chick and Watson type) approaches is presented based on helpful results of experiments. This study also demonstrate that the combined treatment (ultra-sonication with $H_2O_2$) is overall highly efficient than individual treatment would, but on the basis of exposure time, the ultra-sonication was the most efficient among them. Therefore the development of sole and combined technique might be effective practical mitigation strategy against mussel attachment for water handling facilities.
Sympathetic skin response (SSR) is defined as a minute change of skin potential after electrical stimulation. This test measures the change in voltage that originates from the surface of the skin and is attributed to sudomotor activity. The aim of this study was to define the criteria for validation of the responses. 40 normal subjects (20-73 years of age) with non-sympathetic dysfunction were tested and SSR was generated form all subjects. SSR latency was 1331.22${\pm}$177.51ms in the right palm, 1331.74${\pm}$156.42ms in the left palm, 1851.79${\pm}$220.99ms in the right sole, and 1874.10${\pm}$215.01ms in the left sole. And SSR amplitude was 595.83${\pm}$221.16${\mu}$V in the right palm, 605.33${\pm}$226.45${\mu}$V in the left palm, 291.76${\pm}$133.36${\mu}$V in the right sole, and 288.77${\pm}$129.70${\mu}$ V in the left sole. SSR latency and amplitude had no significantly difference between the right and the left side. SSR latency was consistently shorter (p<0.001) and SSR amplitude higher (p<0.001) in feet than in hands. SSR waveforms were P-type (32 subjects, 75%) and N-type (8 subjects, 25%), respectively. The SSR latency and amplitude in palms/soles were closely correlated with age (p<0.05) and height (p<0.05). The SSR test is one of methods assessing impairment of sympathetic fibers in peripheral neuropathy as well as a disorder of sympathetic system in other diseases and so our results from normal healthy subjects can be used as clinical criteria for SSR test.
Effect of plasmid curing of Acinetobacter sp. B-W on the production of siderophore from glutamic acid as both carbon and nitrogen sole sources was investigated. Plasmid cured mutant of strain B-W lost the ability to produce siderophore from glutamic acid at $28^{\circ}C$. Transformant E. coli $DH5{\alpha}$ harboring 20 kb plasmid, that was isolated from wild type of strain B-W produced siderophore from glutamic acid as both carbon and nitrogen sole sources at $28^{\circ}C$, but, not at $36^{\circ}C$. Production of siderophore from glutamic acid by transformant E. coli $DH5{\alpha}$ was completely inhibited by $10{\mu}M\;FeCl_3$. In previous report, catechol nature of siderophore produced from glutamic acid by strain B-W was detected by Arnow test. The siderophore produced from glutamic acid by transformant E. coli $DH5{\alpha}$ was also catechol type. Rf value of siderophore produced from transformant E. coli $DH5{\alpha}$ grown in medium glutamic acid as both carbon and nitrogen sole sources at $28^{\circ}C$ was 0.32 in butanol-acetic acid-water (12:3:5) as developing solvent. Rf value of the siderophore was the same with that of wild type of strain B-W. Thus a single plasmid of 20 kb seemed to be involved in the production of siderophore from glutamic acid.

Defense firms' excess profitability by shifting common overhead costs from non-defense sector to defense sector in the award of cost reimbursement type of defense contracts is a widespread conclusion in prior researches. In this paper, we reviewed cost-shifting incentives in defense-contracting firms and extended the analysis of McGowan and Vendrzyk(2002) by applying modified model to Korea Defense Contracts. We formulated six hypotheses to test the relation of cost-shifting and excess profitability regarding market openness, auditing system, ranking in defense contracts, and firm types(sole defense contractors, sole non-defense contractors, and defense and non-defense mixed contractors). But, we could not find any evidence that defense firms shifted costs from non-defense sector to defense sector for the period 1997-2002. The results suggest that the excess profitability of Korea defense firms may not be from the cost-shifting but from other reasons.
Wild-type V. vulnificus cannot grow using lactose as the sole carbon source or take up the sugar. However, prolonged culture of this species in media containing lactose as the sole carbon source leads to the generation of a spontaneous lactose-utilizing (LU) mutant. This mutant showed strong ${\beta}$-galactosidase activity, whereas the wild-type strain showed a barely detectable level of the activity. A mutant with a lesion in a gene homologous to the lacZ of E. coli in the bacterium no longer showed ${\beta}$-galactosidase activity or generated spontaneous LU mutants, suggesting that the lacZ homolog is responsible for the catabolism of lactose, but the expression of the gene and genes for transport of lactose is tightly regulated. Genetic analysis of spontaneous LU mutants showed that all the mutations occur in a lacI homolog, which is located downstream to the lacZ and putative ABC-type lac permease genes. Consistent with this, a genomic library clone containing the lad gene, when present in trans, made the spontaneous LU mutants no longer able to utilize lactose as the sole carbon source. Taken together with the observation that excessive amounts of exogenously supplemented possible catabolic products of lactose have negative effects on the growth and survivability of V. vulnificus, we suggest that V. vulnificus has evolved to carry a repressor that tightly regulates the expression of lacZ to keep the intracellular toxic catabolic intermediates at a sublethal level.

Jeokbokryung-tang was good especially for type limb hyperhidrosis falling under the shape of the small intestines heat which conforms to the person having a short perpendicular furrow of the upper lip or lifted upper lip. Palmul-tang was good for type limb hyperhidrosis tending to having leaking liquid and humor because of the disorder of transfer of Jung, Ki, Shin, Hyul. Dossipyungwi-san and Hyangsapyungwi-san were good for type limb hyperhidrosis caused by stomach heat by food accumulation and Ki depression.
This study was attempted to clarify differences in sizes and shapes of foot between 20's and 60-70's women and analyzed the characteristics of elderly women's foot shapes as compared with those of young. The 2D data were 101 elderly and 101 young women in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The results are as follows: Firstly, the foot length of the elderly was shorter than that of the young, the foot breadth and the heel width were widened, but the toes breadth became smaller and the deformity of the toe 1 and the first metatarsal part appeared. Secondly, in the Foot Index, there was a significant difference in age group, the young is more than the elderly in the narrow type, standard type, the elderly women showed more than three times the young in the wide type. Thirdly, in the factor analysis for the foot type classification, 'foot length' factors in both age groups were large. Next, young group were influenced by 'toes breadth', lateral ball breadth' factors, elderly group was influenced by the 'lateral ball breadth', 'medial ball breadth' factors. Lastly, in the cluster analysis of the elderly group, the types of sole were classified as W-Type(20.8%, wide foot and toes, large heel), H-type(20.8%, small toes breadth, heel), D-type(31.7%, long length and wide lateral ball) and A-Type(26.7%, which is found only in the elderly, small length and large toes angle). As a result, it is necessary to design the shoes that match the characteristics of the soles of the elderly women.
We determined the maturity and growth of the Marbled sole, Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae based on monthly sampling in the West Sea of Korea from February 2009 to December 2010. Determination of sex of P. yokohamae was by gonadal inspection, and age and growth were determined by analyzing the otolith. The biological minimum size of P. yokohamae female was 24.5 cm. The seasonal changes in the ratio of a translucent zone to an opaque zone revealed that the end of the translucent zone of the otolith were annuli formed in May once a year. We compared 8 type growth equations with several length-at-age data. By using the length-at-monthly age data of these, the calculated von Bertalanffy growth equations were $L_t=41.7(1-e^{-0.47(t+0.24)})$ for females and $L_t=32.7(1-e^{-0.75(t+0.01)})$ for males. We estimated that 24.5 cm was the total length of 2 year old P. yokohamae spawns in the cold water season from January to April, and grows to 8 years old for females and 6 years old for males in the West Sea of Korea.

In the present work, methanethiol and dimethyldisulfide were investigated as sulfur sources for methionine synthesis in Corynebacterium glutamicum. In silico pathway analysis predicted a high methionine yield for these reduced compounds, provided that they could be utilized. Wild-type cells were able to grow on both methanethiol and dimethyldisulfide as sole sulfur sources. Isotope labeling studies with mutant strains, exhibiting targeted modification of methionine biosynthesis, gave detailed insight into the underlying pathways involved in the assimilation of methanethiol and dimethyldisulfide. Both sulfur compounds are incorporated as an entire molecule, adding the terminal S-$CH_3$ group to O-acetylhomoserine. In this reaction, methionine is directly formed. MetY (O-acetylhomoserine sulfhydrylase) was identified as the enzyme catalyzing the reaction. The deletion of metY resulted in methionine auxotrophic strains grown on methanethiol or dimethyldisulfide as sole sulfur sources. Plasmid-based overexpression of metY in the ${\Delta}$metY background restored the capacity to grow on methanethiol or dimethyldisulfide as sole sulfur sources. In vitro studies with the C. glutamicum wild type revealed a relatively low activity of MetY for methanethiol (63 mU/mg) and dimethyldisulfide (61 mU/mg). Overexpression of metY increased the in vitro activity to 1,780 mU/mg and was beneficial for methionine production, since the intracellular methionine pool was increased 2-fold in the engineered strain. This positive effect was limited by a depletion of the metY substrate O-acetylhomoserine, suggesting a need for further metabolic engineering targets towards competitive production strains.
Agrobacterium tumefaciens KU12 isolated from Korea is able to induce tumors on various plants and catabolize octopine as a sole carbon and nitrogen source. A, tumefaciens KU12 contains three plasmids. Their sizes are 45.5 kb. 240 kb. and > 240 kb. respectively. For the purpose of identification of octopine type Ti plasmid, avirulent A, tumefacients A136 is transformed with plasmids isolated from KU12 by direct transformation. Transformants containing Ti plasmid were grown on AB medium containing octopine as a sole nitrogen source. The isolated strain, named KU911, contains only 240 kb plasmid. As a result of induction of crown gall and Southern hybridization with other octopine Ti plasmid pTiAch5, 240 kb plasmid named pTiKU12 was Ti plasmid.
