Recently, researches for buried lifelines such as pipelines have been carried out to provide for safe design. On of the major causes to the damage of buried pipelines has been soil liquefaction. Analytical models have been presented to compare with the results from recent model experiment under a soil liquefaction environment induced by seismic shaking table. The analytical results were more than two times those those of experimental measurement. Thus the objective of this study is to introduce a rigorous nonlinear analysis of equation of motion with more realistic parameters which are dynamic soil and water pressure, dynamic subgrade reaction coefficient, and damping coefficient for soil liquefaction environment.
Recently reclamation land is largely developed to utilize the land according to economic growth. The soil of landfill is soft, low shear strength, which makes it difficult to use the equipment. A large movement is occurred on the utility tunnel under construction. The inclined land with high water level and underground facilities are widely distributed and the excess pore water pressure may occur under construction similarly to this study. Some different conditions are made to design result, such as 4m of soil piling near the construction area, heavy rainfall during 2nd excavation that may cause flow liquefaction. To analyze the cause of transverse lateral movement, Three dimensional analysis are performed to four load cases, which is original design condition, flow liquefaction by heavy rainfall, unsymmetric lateral soil pressure, and both of them simultaneously. Ten steps of full construction stage, 1st excavation for utility tunnel, construction of utility tunnel, 1st refill, piling soil from 1m to 4 m, 2nd excavation for drainage culvert, liquefaction around the utility tunnel, construction of drainage culvert and 2nd refill, are take into account to investigate the cause of movement.

An experimental assessment on the dynamic behavior of saturated sand which can consider the irregular characteristics of earthquakes was proposed. The equivalent uniform stress concept presented by Seed and Idriss has been applied to evaluate the liquefaction resistance strength to simplify earthquake loading. However, it was known that the liquefaction resistance strength of soil based on the equivalent uniform stress concept can't exactly mirror the dynamic characteristics of the irregular earthquake motion. In this study, estimation of the criterion of the liquefaction resistance strength was determined by applying real earthquake loading to the cyclic triaxial test. From the test results, relationships between excess pore water pressure and the earthquake characteristics such as magnitude or duration were determined. Magnitude scaling factors to determine the soil liquefaction resistance strength in seismic design were also proposed.

When some enormous earthquake hazards broke out in the neighboring Japan and Taiwan, many Korean earthquake engineers thought that seismic guidelines must be adjusted safely and economically to consider the moderate earthquake characteristics. In the present aseismic guideline for liquefaction potential assessment, a simplified method using SPT-N value and a detail method based on the dynamic lab-tests were introduced. However, it is said that these methods based on the equivalent stress concept to simplify an irregular earthquake are not reliable to simulate the kaleidoscopical characteristics of earthquake loading correctly. Especially, even though various data from the dynamic lab-test can be obtained, only two data, a maximum cyclic load and a number of cycle at an initial liquefaction are used to determine the soil resistance strength in the detailed method. In this study, a new assessment of liquefaction potential is proposed and verified. In the proposed assessment, various data from dynamic lab-tests are used to determine the unique soil resistance characteristic and a site specific analysis is introduced to analyze the irregular earthquake time history itself. Also, it is found that the proposed assessment is reasonable because it is devised to reflect the changeable soil behavior under dynamic loadings resulted from the generation and development of excess pore water pressure.

Recently, the number of damages on social infrastructure has increased due to natural disasters and the frequency of earthquake events that are higher than magnitude 3 has increased in South Korea. Liquefaction was found near the epicenter of a 5.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Pohang, South Korea, in 2017. To explore increases in soil moisture index due to soil liquefaction, changes in the remote exploration index by the land cover before and post-earthquake occurrence were analyzed using liquefaction feasibility index and multi-cyclical Landsat-8 satellite images. We found that the soil moisture index(SMI) in the liquefaction region immediately after the earthquake event increased significantly using the Normal Vegetation Index(NDVI) and Surface Temperature(LST).
The purpose of this study is to utilize conventional procedures for evaluation of liquefaction potential and to compare the results obtained by modified detailed method based on Korean earthquake magnitude (M=6.5). Liquefaction potential is assessed by comparing liquefaction strength of soil and cyclic shear stress generated in the soil layers during earthquakes. The cyclic shear stress is computed from the earthquake response analysis, and liquefaction strength of soil is evaluated by using results from cyclic triaxial tests. The cyclic triaxial tests are performed on many different conditions of sample ; relative densities(50%, 60%, and 70%), initial effective confining pressures (70kPa, 100kPa, and 150kPa), and fine contents(10%, 20%, and 30%). From the result of comparing the conventional procedure with the modified detailed method, it is found that the modified detailed method tends to evaluate larger safety factor against liquefaction in the weak sand site$(FS \leq1.5)$. Therefore in this case, it is suggested that liquefaction potential should be evaluated by using the modified detailed method based on cyclic triaxial tests. It is also found that in modified detailed method based on earthquake magnitude 6.5, critical depth where liquefaction can be generated is around 15m from the ground surface.
Recently, the use of CPT-based liquefaction assessment method has increased by providing more accurate results than other field tests. In CPT-based liquefaction evaluation, various soil properties are predicted and they are used for liquefaction potential assessment. In particular, fines content is one of the important input parameters in CPT-based liquefaction assessment, so it is very important to use correct prediction model and to make quantitative evaluation of estimating variability of fines content. In this study, the error evaluation of existing models for prediction of fines content through CPT was performed, and the most suitable model was selected for Pohang area, where the liquefaction phenomenon was observed in the 2017. In addition, the inherent variability of soil was analyzed, and the estimating variability of fines content was evaluated quantitatively considering the inherent variability of soil, measurement error of CPT and transformation uncertainty of selected model.

In this study, a set of laboratory liquefaction test has been conducted using undisturbed samples collected from Songlim-park, Pohang where liquefaction phenomenon had been observed in 2017. Soil samples were frozen right after tube sampling to minimize the disturbances during transport, storage, and test preparation. Cyclic triaxial test has been carried out to evaluate the liquefaction resistance ratio of undisturbed soil samples. As a result, the liquefaction resistance ratio of samples collected from 8.0~8.8 m and 11.0~11.8 m were almost similar, and these values were approximately 0.04~0.07 larger than values estimated by simplified assessment method using field test results. It is expected that the application of undisturbed sample for the evaluation of liquefaction resistance could contribute to the economical design of geotechnical structures.
Liquefaction may be caused by sudden decrease in the soil strength under undrained conditions. This loss of soil strength is related to the development of excess pore pressures. During this study, fines content affects the maximum and minimum void ratios are investigated. The results of static and cyclic triaxial test on silty saturated sands are presented. These tests are performed to evaluate liquefaction strength and static and cyclic behavior characteristics. The samples are obtained from Saemangeum and drying on air. The main results are summarized as follows : 1) The maximum and minimum void ratio lines follow similar trends. 2) Maximum and minimum void ratios are established at 20~30% fines content. 3) As confining pressures and overconsolidation ratio are increased, the resistance to liquefaction are increased. 4) Instability friction angles are increased with increasing initial relative density. 5) The resistance to liquefaction are decreased with increasing effective stress ratio.

When subjected to earthquake shaking, saturated sandy soil may generate excess pore pressure. And a time may come when initial confining pressure will equal to excess pore pressure. Depending on the characteristics of the soil and the length of the drainage path, excess pore pressure was dissipated after earthquake. For this reason, it was induced settlement in grounds and fatal damage of various structures. In this study, settlement in silty sand grounds induced earthquake was evaluated using post-liquefaction constitutive equation between volumetric strain and shear strain from previous study. Using that, it was proposed that simplified estimation of settlement in silty sand grounds induced liquefaction.
