Growth and tuber development of ‘Black Magic’calla lily as affected by the rain shelter with 50% shading and the tuber size were investigated. Tubers of five grades in size were cultivated in the rain shelter or in the open field (control). Days to emergence of shoots in the rain shelter was accelerated by 4.2 days as compared to the open field. Emergence ratio was higher as the tuber was larger, tubers grown in the rain shelter showed the significance in the growth characteristics as compared to the control. There were no significant differences in the number of flowers per tuber between the rain shelter and the open field. Flower quality was 12.2 cm longer than that in the open field. flowering characteristics was improved with the increasing tuber size. Low infection of soft rot disease of 3∼22% was found in the rain shelter as compared to the that of 19∼83% in the open field. Thus tubers produced under the rain shelter showed improved quality, Even if the small tubers with diameters of 0.5∼1.0 cm were cultivated in the rain shelter, the weight and diameters of tuber harvested after approximately 7 months were 50.2 g and 5.7 cm, respectively.

This experiment was carried out to establish the screening methods for the selection of Zantedeschia aethiopica cultivars resistant to calla lily soft rot caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum. A center of leaf and petiole tissues of four Z. aethiopica cultivars were wounded and inoculated with three different inoculum concentrations, $1{\times}10^7cfu/mL$, $1{\times}10^8cfu/mL$, and $1{\times}10^9cfu/mL$, of EccNHRI-21 isolate. And they were evaluated at 4, 18, and 26 hours after inoculation. The lesion of maceration was developed well in the leaf tissues inoculated with $1{\times}10^9cfu/mL$ concentration. And evaluation of resistance in 18 hours after inoculation was correlated with field resistance positively. Using this method, ten Z. aethiopica commercial cultivars and four wild types were screened. 'Crowbrough' and 'White Cutie' were selected as highly resistant genotypes and 'Mont Blanc' and 'Silky White' as resistant genotypes. 'Wedding March' and 'Kiwi Blush' were evaluated as moderate resistant and the others including 'Childsiana' were susceptible. And all of four wild types were evaluated as more than moderate resistant. In spite of control through cultural, biological and chemical methods, the use of resistant cultivars is most efficient to overcome calla lily soft rot. This newly developed screening method was helpful for breeding new varieties resistant to calla lily soft rot.
Bacterial soft rot by Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora is one of the diseases causing the biggest problem in Chinese cabbage. Chemical screening was conducted to select effective agents for controlling bacterial soft rot. Control effect of antibiotics, plant activator, and Biokeeper (avirulent Erwinia) to soft rot were tested by in vitro assay, nursery test, and field experiment. The in vitro assay was done by paper disc method and potato slice method. The nursery test was performed by using mineral oil inoculation method with consistent disease induction. The in vitro assay showed that streptomycin, oxolinic acid, bronopol, and copper hydroxide significantly suppressed the growth of pathogenic bacterium and the decomposition of potato slice. However, plant activators including acibenzolar-S-methyl did not show the suppressive effect on the growth of pathogenic bacterium and the decomposition of potato slice. When applied by the nursery test condition using mineral oil inoculation method with Chinese cabbage 'Kangruckyeurum', Biokeeper, oxolinic acid, antibiotics streptomycin, validamycin, and copper compound provided 83.5%, 95.2%, 91.2%, 57.5% and 79.9% in control efficacy, respectively. However, the control effect of acibenzolar-S-methyl showed to be low to cause phytotoxicity. Also acibenzolar-S-methyl showed a significant control effect in the field experiment with Chinese cabbage 'Sanchon' in 2000, but the field experiment with Chinese cabbage 'Kangruckyeurum' in 2001 revealed it had phytotoxicity to Chinese cabbage. Such a difference was considered to be caused by differences in phytotoxic reaction of Chinese cabbage cultivars to the chemical. Streptomycin+copper, copper hydroxide and Biokeeper showed 79.7%, 71.9% and 60.9% in control efficacy, respectively, in the field experiment with Chinese cabbage 'Sanchon' in 2002.
Vegetables including Chinese cabbage and radish have been grown in alpine areas such as Muju, Namweon, Jinan and Jangsu during the shortage period of vegetables. The incidence of various diseases, environmental factors such as temperatures and rainfalls, and aphid populations as virus vector were observed at 10-day intervals from July to September in those areas. Disease incidence showed no significant difference among locations. Major diseases in Chin ese cabbage were bacterial soft rot, white spot, downy mildew, mosaic virus, Alternaria leaf spot and Fusarium seedling blight. Major diseases in radish were virus, white rust, black rot, root rot, leaf spot and Fusarium seedling blight. Disease incidence reached peak on Aug. 20 with $27\%$ infection in radish and with $20\%$ infection in Chinese cabbage during the growing season, and declined thereafter. Percentage of infection in each growth stage showed $25\%$ at root thickening stage and $26\%$ at the harvest time in radish; and the head formation stage, $24\%$ at the harvest time. The data indicate that disease incidence in radish increased rapidly at late growing stage and progressively increased in Chinese cabbage Seedling blight caused by Fusarium sp. and root rot caused by Aphanomyces sp. were also observed in those areas. Cool and wet weather appeared to be favorable for disease incidences during the rainy period of growing season although average temperature was about $25^{\circ}C$. Populations of aphids were lower in the alpine vegetable growing area than that of flat areas. Aphids as virus vectors from total aphids collected were $73.5\%$ or 289 virus vectors /993 total aphids in Namweon and $18.1\%$ or 31 virus vectors/171 total aphids in Muju. The most prerevalent species of aphids was Myzus persicae Sulz.
A sclerotinia rot of Water cress (Oenanthe javanica) occurred in the commerical farmers field at Garye-myon, Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, Korea, 2002. The typical symptoms appeared on leaves and stems. At first, the infected leaves or stems turned dark green later become watery soft rotted; white fluffy mycelia grew from the lesion, later formed black sclerotia. Sclerotia on the infected plants and PDA medium were globose to cylindrical or irregular in shape and 1.0~10.7 ${\times}$1.0~7.6 mm in size. Cup-shaped aphothecia with numerous asci were formed from sclerotinia and the size were 0.4~1.6 cm in diameter. Asci with 8 spores were cylindrical and 74~236 ${\times}$ 4.2~24.8 m in size. Ascospores of one cell were hyaline, ellipsoid to ovoid in shape, and 8.3~12.4 ${\times}$ 3.6~7.2 m in size. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth was $25^{\circ}C$ , and sclerotinia forma-tion was between 15~$20^{\circ}C$. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenecity test to host plants, the fungus was identified as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. This is the first report of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum caused sclerotinia rot on Oenanthe javanica caused by in Korea.
The antifungal activity of super reductive water (SRW) against plant pathogenic fungi was examined to extend its application to integrated pest management (IPM) for plant diseases. Diluted solutions ($\times$1/10, $\times$1/25, and $\times$1/50) of SRW inhibited fungal growth of kiwifruit soft rot pathogen, Diaporthe actinidiae, in a concentration dependent manner, When kiwifruits were inoculated on wounds with mycelium blocks, stock and diluted solutions successfully inhibited the disease development. In addition to the high pH of the SRW, fungistatic activity was also considered as the cause of the antifungal effect against the pathogen. Whereas conidial germination of Magnaporthe grisea was not affected by the diluted SRW solutions, appressorium formation was significantly inhibited in a concentration dependent manner, With little harmfulness to human health and environment SRW could be used to control plant pathogenic fungi, particularly appressorium-forming fungal pathogens.

Burkholderia gladioli pv. alliicola CH1 showed typical soft rot symptoms at higher than $20^{\circ}C$ but very weak soft rot symptoms at temperature under $10^{\circ}C$. Among the nine agro-chemicals, oxolinic acid WP, streptomycin + copper hydroxide WP and streptomycin WP were found to be effective for the inhibition of the pathogen in vitro. The results of scanning electron microscopic investigation showed that onion bulbs was macerated by infection of B. gladioli pv. alliicola CH1. B. gladioli pv. alliicola CH1 was able to produce polygalacturonase but did not produce pectin lyase and carboxymethylcellulase. In analysis of the polygalacturonase activity of the isolated pectin-degradation enzymes from B. gladioli pv. alliicola CH1 total protein, three activity bands 45 kDa, 35 kDa, and 29 kDa were detected by the direct (or in-gel) activity staining on SDS-PAGE.
Ferritin is ubiquitous in bacteria, animals and plants. Ferritin is thought to play two main roles in living cells to provide iron for the synthesis of iron protein such as ferretoxin and cytochromes and to prevent damage from radicals produced by iron/dioxygen interaction. To enhance the resistance of potato to Erwinia carotovora, the soybean ferritin gene was introduced into the potato either under CaMV 35S or hsr203J promoter. Potato transgenic plants were screened by PCR analysis using specific primers to the ferritin gene. Expression of ferritin gene under CaMV 35S and hsr203J promoter in potato transgenic plants was confirmed by northern blot analysis. hsr203J promoter known to pathogen inducible in tobacco drives the induction upon Phytophthora infestan in potato and the transcript level of ferritin gene was extremely high after 24 hours post inoculation. One of transformants under CaMV 35S promoter was increased 2.5 fold than untransformant. Each one of transgenic potato containing gene promoter CaMV 35S and hsr203J-ferrtin fusion exhibited tolerance against potato soft rot.

A plant growth promoting rhizobacterium, Bacillus vallismortis BS07M, was formulated as a clay pellet (CP) to evaluate its pepper growth promotion and induced resistance against various diseases under field and storage conditions. Peppers were grown in 50-hole tray containing potting mixture with CP in seedling raising stage, and then it was transplanted into a field. After transplanting, pepper plants treated with CP in seedling raising stage increased shoot growth and reduced disease severity caused by Phytophthora capsici in detached pepper leaves compared to untreated control. Moreover, treatment with CP in seedling raising stage increased fruit weight per plant; after harvesting, pepper fruits shown reduced diameter of lesions by Colletotrichum acutatum, and occurrance of soft rot in storage condition. These results indicated that CP could affect plant growth and induced resistance in pepper plants under field condition, and maintenance of fruit during storage.

Genetic improvement in potato can be carried out through several approaches, as sexual crosses, somatic hybridization, mutation and genetic engineering. Although the approach is different, but the goal is the same, to get a superior cultivar. Mutation and genetic engineering are very interesting methods for genetic improvement of potato plants. Mutation by gamma-ray irradiation have been performed to get some new potato cultivars which are more resistant to disease and have higher productivity. We have carried out a mutation of some potato cultivars and obtained some excellent clones to be potentially released as new superior cultivars. By the mutation method, we have released one potato cultivar for the French fries industry, and we registered one cultivar of potato for chips, and two cultivar for vegetable potatoes. Actually we are doing multi-location trial for three clones to be released as new cultivars. Through genetic engineering, several genes have been introduced into the potato plant, and we obtained several clones of transgenic potato plants. Transgenic potato plants containing FBPase gene encoding for fructose bisphosphatase, have a higher rate of photosynthesis and higher tuber productivity than non-transgenic plants. This result suggests that FBPase plays an important role in increasing the rate of photosynthesis and potato tuber productivity. Some transgenic potatoes containing the Hd3a gene are currently being evaluated for their productivity. Over expression of the Hd3a gene is expected to increase tuber productivity and induce flowering in potatoes. Transgenic potato plants containing MmPMA gene encoding for plasma membrane ATPse are more tolerant to low pH than non-transgenic plants, indicating that plasma membrane ATPase plays an important role in the potato plant tolerance to low pH stress. Transgenic potato plants containing c-lysozyme genes, are highly tolerant of bacterial wilt diseases caused by Ralstonia solanacearum and bacterial soft rot disease caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum. Expression of c-lyzozyme gene plays an important role in increasing the resistance of potato plants to bacterial diseases.
