An optimized spudcan was designed for the Southwestern Sea, an area mostly comprised of sand and soft clay layers. The spudcan was designed using guidelines by SNAME, ISO, and InSafeJIP, as well as the yield surface for combined loads. The probe test method was applied to define a yield surface used in estimating spudcan stability. Numerical analyses that considered vertical, horizontal, and moment loads in Southwestern Sea resulted in a design of 8 m diameter spudcan. Additionally, the empirical equations suggested by previous studies can estimate a reasonable spudcan bearing capacity at shallow depth. Each yield surface calculated from Mohr Coulomb and Hardening soil model showed different shapes, however the yield surface also grew with increasing spudcan diameter. This yield surface is a useful reference, along with site investigation results and published guidelines, to estimate the stability of a spudcan in the Southwestern Sea.
In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement and gain a required shear strength for a given soft clay deposit, vertical drain method combined with a preloading technique has been widely applied. In this paper, a theory of axisymmetric nonlinear consolidation fer drainage-installed deposit, which considers secondary compression (or creep) during primary consolidation, as well as the variations of compressibility and permeability during the consolidation process, has been developed. A computer program named AXICON based on Hypothesis B fur the analysis of axisymmetric nonlinear consolidation was developed by adopting finite difference method. The results of AS(ICON were compared with Hansbo's solution based on Hypothesis A, as well as in-situ settlements and pore pressures measured in test embankment of Ska-Edeby. The results indicated that Hypothesis A usually underestimated the in-situ settlement and Hypothesis B was considered to be logically correct. It was also shown that one may able to appropriately predict the real in-situ behaviors using the proposed program.

The behavior of composite piles composed of steel pipe pile in the upper part and concrete pile in the lower part by a mechanical splicing joint was examined by field lateral load tests and bending tests. A total of 7 piles including two instrumented piles for bending test were installed. The soil profile consists of soft clay with weak silt with shallow groundwater level. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the basic soil characteristics and the strength parameters. This paper presents the composite pile behavior with various portions of the upper steel pile: 0, 20, 30, and 45% of the pile embedded pile length. Three-point bending tests were performed to investigate the stress-strain relation at the mechanical joint. Based on these test results, the behavior of composite piles with various upper steel pile length are evaluated and the stability of mechanical joints are examined. Through comparisons with results of field load tests, it was found that lateral load carrying capacity of the composite piles increased and deflections of the composite piles decreased with increasing the upper steel piles. The mechanical joint was proved to retain its structural stability against the tested load conditions. Economical benefits of composite pile of this kind can be gained by setting adequately the length of the upper steel pipe piles.
The most effective way to distinguish subsurface interfaces that produce various geophysical responses is through the integration of multiple geophysical methods, with each method detecting both a complementary and unique set of distinct physical properties relating to the subsurface. In this study, shallow seismic reflection (SSR) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were conducted at the Cheongju-Gadeok site of the Korea National Groundwater Monitoring Network to map the water table, which was measured at 12 m depth during the geophysical surveys. The water table proved to be a good target reflector in both datasets, as the abrupt transition from the overlying unsaturated weathered rock to the underlying saturated weathered rock yielded large acoustic impedance and dielectric constant contrasts. The two datasets were depth converted and integrated into a single section, with the SSR and GPR surveys conducted to ensure subsurface imaging at approximately the same wavelength. The GPR data provided detailed information on the upper ~15 m of the section, whereas the SSR data imaged structures at depths of 10-45 m. The integrated section thus captured the full depth coverage of the sandy clay, water table, weathered rock, soft rock, and hard rock structures, which correlated well with local drillcore and water table observations. Incorporation of these two geophysical datasets yielded a synthetic section that resembled a simplified aquifer model, with the best-fitting seismic velocity, dielectric constant, and porosity of the saturated weathered layer being $v_{seismic}=1000m/s$, ${\varepsilon}_r=16$, and ${\phi}=0.32$, respectively.

Deep cement mixing method (DCM) is used to improve the quality of various ground type and its technical development proceeding based on performance improvements of solidification materials and mixing techniques with ground soil. In this study, it was possible to improve silty clay ground soil had 1 to 3 MPa compressive strength using solidification material that composed mainly circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) power plant fly ash and reduce standard deviation of strengths from over 1.0 MPa to 0.322 MPa using improved auger bits in field test to forming more uniform bulbs than in case of using existing auger bit.

Prefabricated Board Drains (PBDs) recently become more widely used than conventional sand drains in improving soft ground because the PBD is more time and cost effective. The performance of PBDs is affected by disturbance in the adjacent soil formation during inserting mandrels, the intrusion of fine particles into filter fabric, and necking of the drain by excessive lateral pressure especially occurring in very deep clay formation such as the Busan New Port site. In this study, the PBD with double-core is introduced, which seems to overcome the shortcomings of usual single-core PBDs. An in-situ test program was established in the Busan New Port site, in which a set of the double-core PBDs and the single-core PBDs was installed to compare the efficiency of each of the drains. The discharge capacity of the double-core and the single-core PBDs was compared for various confining pressures in the modified Delft test and the chamber test. A series of CRS consolidation tests was performed in order to obtain profiles of void ratio-effective stress and void ratio-permeability relationships in the Busan New Port site that are used as input date in performing a numerical program ILLICON. The numerically simulated settlements of ground surface in the test site are in good agreement with those of in-situ measurements. In addition, the performance of the double-core and single-core PBDs has been experimentally and numerically compared in this paper.
In the correlation formulas related to consolidation proposed at present, the analyzed areas are limited to certain overseas or domestic areas and in order to increase the number of data, experimental data of different areas are integrated and therefore in many cases application is difficult. In addition, models have been developed without clear statistic evaluation of the obtained data. Accordingly, this study divided the soft areas of the west coast into Hangang, Kumgang and Yeongsangang in order to maximally reduce uncertainty of the experimental data and performed normality test and regression analysis on the physical and dynamic characteristics. According to the analysis result, the compression index and the modified compression index had strong linearity and in all areas modified compression index and initial void ratio had closest correlation, followed by total unit weight, water contents and liquid limits. As for overconsolidation ratio with depth, the width of overconsolidation ratio was large when the depth was less than 5 to 6 m in all areas and when the depth was over 5 to 6 m, the ratio was constant.

In urban areas, tunnelling induced ground deformations, particularly ground settlements should be considered in order to minimize the damage of adjacent structures. Therefore, an appropriate monitoring system for the tunnel construction should be setup at the planning or design stage. A number of studies on ground settlements due to tunnelling in soft ground have been carried out so far. However, most studies have focused on clay soil rather than sand soil. In particular, a few studies on behaviour of subsurface deformations in granular material have been reported. In this study, two-dimensional laboratory model test with aluminium rods regarded as continuum granular material and close range photogrammetric technique, and numerical analysis were carried out in order to identify the behaviour of subsurface deformations due to shallow tunnelling. Direction and magnitude of displacement vectors from the model test was identical to the numerical analysis. In particular, the vector direction was appeared to be toward a point below the tunnel invert level. A narrow 'chimney or tulip like' pattern of vertical displacement was confirmed by both the model test and numerical analysis. This is consistent with the field data. In addition to the qualitative comparison, the quantitative comparison of subsurface settlements according to 2D volume loss showed good agreement between the model test and numerical analysis. Therefore, close range photogrammetric technique applied in the model test may be used to validate the result from the continuum numerical analysis.

Triaxial compression tests were performed with control of vertical stress, confined pressure(${\sigma}_H$), and injection velocity by means of impervious soil samples with a different grain size, density and grout density. By measuring pore water pressure at the time of vertical fracturing around the bore-hole, relationships between main factors are described, and the factors are pore water pressure, confined pressure, vertical fracturing injection pressure(${\sigma}$) and the tension strength(${\sigma}_t$). The hydraulic fracturing of soft clay was occurred at the pressure which was less than the pressure obtained by the theory of elasticity. It was found that the above result was the influence of pore water pressure due to injection pressure($U_a$) and pore water pressure due to confined pressure($U_i$). Therefore, the vertical injection pressure at the time of fracturing needs to be changed as follows. $${\sigma}=2{\cdot}{{\sigma}_H}-(U_a+U_i)+{\sigma}_t$$.

This paper dealt with numerical analysis of sand drain considering the smear effect around drain wells and discontinuous deformation behavior due to difference in rigidity between drain materials and adjacent clayey soils. Biot's equation was selected as governing equation coupled with MODCAM (Modified Cam-clay) model or EVP(Elasto-Viscoplastic) model as constitutive equation. The validity as well as the accuracy of the method developed by author was checked by comparing the proposed method with those by Siriwardane and Ghaboussi using joint element. The FEM analysis developed in this study was applied to both 2-dimensional model foundation and actual foundation. the result of which proved to be satisfactory.
