  • Both in Korea and internationally, many know and appreciate Daesoon Jinrihoe for its social work in the three main areas of education, social welfare and health care, and charity aid. The article surveys Daesoon Jinrihoe's activities in these three areas and proposes a comparison with the charitable and ecological work performed by the Taiwanese Buddhist charity (and new religious movement) Tzu Chi, the peace activities of Soka Gakkai, and the projects developed in Bhutan to implement the policy of Gross National Happiness. Tzu Chi is mostly known for its massive recycling activities, but in fact its view of charity and ecology is based on a specific Buddhist theology. Soka Gakkai's vision of peace relates to its interpretation of Nichiren Buddhism. Gross National Happiness in Bhutan is a project promoted by the government, but scholars who have studied it have concluded that it is deeply rooted in Drukpa Kagyu, the dominant school in Bhutanese Buddhism. Similarities are noted, as well as differences with the Western Christian and post-Christian approach to charity, which is largely based on an affirmation of the self. Daesoon Jinrihoe's social work shares with the Buddhist cases studied in the article the idea that the self may deceive (self-deception) but appears to be inspired by the unique principle of Sangsaeng, and by the idea that the root causes of social problems are grievances accumulated through thousands of years and in need of being resolved.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the cause-and-effect relationships among positive verbal expressions from family members, social network, and disability identity as the determinant factors of intention to work. To achieve the goal, 453 persons with disabilities and with experiences of using facilities for the disabled were studied, who were recruited for the national survey of domestic violence in 2010. For the research subjects, the cause-and-effect relationships among the major factors were examined by using a structural equation model. According to the results, disability identity and intent to work tended to be higher as they had experienced more of positive verbal expressions from their families. Moreover, a more participation in social activities increased disability identity, but not intent to work. Lastly, disability identity was found to be a determinant of intent to work. Based on the results, we provide suggestions to achieve social inclusion of people with disabilities by raising the intent to work.

  • In this paper, we attempted to theorize the multi-faceted impacts of smart work on economic activities. In this vein, we adopted socio-economic perspective which includes individual, firm, and social support aspects, and explored the variables related to the quality of life among them. First, smart work patterns are categorized as telework, mobile office, teleconferencing, and social collaboration. And relevant variables are extracted with reference to industrial cases and relevant literatures which investigated economic impacts of digital convergence. Next, with the data collected from experts, following delphi method, validation of variables and explorations of significant factors affecting quality of life were conducted by adopting stepwise regression method. The distinguishing traits of this research are two-folds. The one is the investigation of social support and quality of life aspects of smart work, which has been relatively limited in the digital convergence research field. The other is the comparative analysis of smart work advantages by distinguishing individual and firm aspects separately. The result offers useful insights for socio-economic perspective researches on digital convergence application area.

Method: Data were obtained through questionnaires from 240 ICU nurses working in hospitals of 500 beds or more in two cities in South Korea. Data analysis was done with t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple stepwise regression with SPSS WIN 14.0. Result: Work stress was positively correlated with level of professional burnout and there was a negative correlation between hardiness and professional burnout. Social support was negatively correlated with level of professional burnout. Hardiness had a positive correlation with social support and a negative correlation with work stress. The explained variances for burnout was 44.7% and factors affecting professional burnout in the ICU nurses' were work satisfaction, work stress, social support, and hardiness. Conclusion: The findings indicate that high levels of stress coupled with low levels of hardiness and social support in ICU nurses result in high levels of professional burnout. Reducing work stress and the level of professional burnout in ICU nurses and increasing work satisfaction can be done by enhancing the mediating factors of hardiness and social support through educational efforts and nursing and administrative support.

  • This paper critically examines the existing discourses about 'relationship', a key element of social work practice and questingly examines Lao-tzu's work of Tao Te Ching, the book of way and virtue, as an alternative theoretical framework for social work relationship. Compared to current discourses of relationship beleaguered by either modernism or postmodernism, both of which are in the deadlock of binary perspective, the insights and vision in Tao Te Ching are successfully able to overcome the limits of them and provide new and profound way of thinking about human, society and their relationship. Especially core cannons crystallized by natural humanistic concepts for cosmos coupled with innate critical power against artificial manipulations of world can extend the horizon of understanding concerning the relationship between client and social workers and therefore provide a new and attractive roles in professional relationship. Moreover, opposed to usual images of Lao-tzu's ideas such as nihilism and passivity, alternative relationship of social work can play an important role of caring the disordered reality where Dao disappered and criticise the selfish desires of individuals and comport the broken-hearted minds in modern society. In addition, results of this paper implies that more extended study articulating ideas of Tao Te Ching with the social work practice would have lots of potentials to promote later researches in quest of 'Korean' social work practice.

This study employs confirmatory factor analysis in Amos 21 to find the discriminant validity of all constructs and regression analysis by Baron and Kenny (1986) to test that psychological empowerment is a mediator of the causal relationship between high-performance work system and organizational citizenship behavior. As the result of the analysis, psychological empowerment has a significant mediating effect on the relationship between high-performance work system and organizational citizenship behavior. The study suggests to the managers in social welfare organizations how they need to enhance organizational citizenship behavior through psychological empowerment themselves.

  • This study analyzed the effect that an organization's leadership and work environment exerts on social worker's practice performance. The survey for data collection was conducted from July 4th 2019 to July 30th, 2019 among employees of social welfare facilities located in Gyeonggi province. We analyzed the data from 205 participants who had agreed on the purpose of the study. The data analysis showed that the factors for social worker's practice performance were found to be marital status, leadership (transformational leadership, transactional leadership) and work environment. On the other hand, work environment (fairness of job evaluation) was found to have a mediating effect in the relationship between leadership and practice performance. Based on the results, this study discussed the need for adequate leadership to be practiced by taking the maturity of the organization members into consideration so that social worker's professional competence in practice performance can improve. As for work environment, it is imperative to increase the fairness in job evaluation.
