  • The modernization approach to monitoring regional processes of providing social services is proposed. The methodological approach is developed in the context of the modern public policy, which includes the following stages: the formation of a system of indicators that characterize the level of the social services modernization; the determination of the levels of regions development by such components as the modernization level of the economic sphere, the modernization level of the demographic component and the modernization level of employment; the determination of weights for each group of indicators and calculation of integrated indicators, ranking of regions; the allocation of criteria for classification and grouping of regions according to the modernization level of the social services sphere; highlighting the most important problems of each region. The proposed method is tested on the example of the Ukraine's regions. According to the results of calculations of the modernization level of the processes of providing social services, the ranking and grouping of the regions was carried out. The rating allowed to distinguish four groups of regions: regions with a high modernization level of social services, regions with above-average levels, as well as regions with medium and low levels. The author's modernization approach to monitoring the processes of providing social services allows to investigate the real state of the main indicators influencing these processes and to identify problem regions in order to develop mechanisms to stimulate their development.

A convenient sample of 254 patients who given follow-up care at the outpatient department after discharge and 225 caregivers were recruited. Mental Status Questionnaire (MSQ), Social Support Inventory Stroke Survivors (SSISS), Illness intrusiveness(II), Instument Activity of Daily Living(IADL), Center of Epidemilogic Studies-Depression(CES-D), social activity and caregiver burden were used for measurement in this study. Results showed patient's physical level measured by IADL and psychological level measured by depression were high. But social activity was low. Cognitive function, depression & social activity were not significantly different by the posthospitalized period, but IADL was. The source of professional support was mostly the physician at the outpatient department. The family support was found significantly related to patient's depression & social activity and caregiver's subjective burden. Professional support was found significantly related to patient's IADL & depression. Illness intrusiveness as a mediating variable was a sig nificantly predicting power on patient's IADL & depression. The path analysis was used to identify the variables to predict the physical, emotional, and social status of patients. As a result, patient's age, cognitive function, illness intursiveness and professional support significantly predicted the level of IADL ; patient's cognitive function, illness intrusiveness and family support significantly predicted the level of depression ; and patient's age and family support significantly predicted the level of social activity of posthospitalized stroke patients. Based upon these results, the rehabilitation programs to reduce the illness intrusiveness and improve cognitive funtion were recommended for the readjustment of the stroke patients. This model of the readjustment of the posthospitalized stroke patients is recommended as the framework for care of the stroke patients.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to identify the status of Successful Aging among the elderly aged 65 and over in rural areas and to compare factors related with Successful Aging between "kyung-ro-dang" users and non-users. Methods: A total of 181 elderly aged 65 or older were selected from four districts (Heung-upri, Mejiri, Sajerri, and Daeanri) of Wonju city. A survey method using face to face interviews was applied to collect information. Successful aging was measured on a 5-point Likert-type scale using the successful aging scale developed for the Korean elderly, which indicates the higher the score, the higher the level of successful aging. Descriptive statistics, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were computed; the level of significance was set at 5%. Hierarchical polynomial regression was applied to find out the factors associated with successful aging. Results: Of the total, 112 elders used kyung-ro-dang and 69 elders who did not use kyung-ro-dang. The level of successful aging of the elderly was higher among kyung-ro-dang users than non-users. The factors related to successful aging among kyung-ro-dang users were walking and social participation. Users who walk more than 4 times per week and social participation activities have a higher level of satisfaction. In the case of non-users, a higher level of monthly income, having a spouse, social support, and social participation associated with a higher level of successful aging. Conclusion: Monthly income, social participation, and social factors were found to be related to successful aging along with physical and mental health conditions among the elderly in rural areas. Therefore, it can be concluded that income, social as well as mental and physical factors, are more critical for successful aging in the rural community care in Korea.

Methods: The participants of this study were 343 child-care teachers from 131 daycare center in Seoul and Gyeon-gi province. Statistical analyses of data for this study included descriptive statistics and hierarchical regressions. The moderating effect of social support was analyzed by using the procedures proposed by Baron and Kenny (1986). Results: The results of this study indicate that the level of child-care teachers' depression increases the level of burn-out and that the level of social support in workplace and the level of social support from out of workplace decreases the level of burn-out. In addition, social support from out of workplace only moderated the influence of child-care teachers' depression on their burn-out. Conclusion/Implications: The influence of child-care teachers' depression on burn-out was lower when the level of social support from out of workplace was high, compared to when it was low.

  • This study was designed to identify the relation between the perceived family support and social adjustment of discharged patients with chronic mental illnesses. The subjects for this study were 50 patients with chronic mental illnesses receiving out-patient treatment at one general hospital and one private hospital in Seoul. The data were collected during the period from April 25, 1991 to May 27, 1991. The perceived family support was measured by the Family Support Scale developed by Hyun Sook Kang. A questionnaire which was developed by Weissman was modified by the author of this study to measure the Social Adjustment. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Pearson Correlation Coefficients, using the SPSS program. The results of this study can be summarized as following ; 1) For the perceived family support, the mean was 2.63 points and the source of family support was almost always the mother. 2) For the social adjustment level, the mean was 2.62 points, and the results showed the best social adjustment was in the area of parental role and family adjustment, and the poorer adjustment was in the area of work and leisure. 3) The relationship between the perceived family support and social adjustment revealed a significant correlation.(r=.38, p<.05) Therefore the hypothesis “the higher the level of perceived family support, the higher the social adjustment level” was accepted. In conclusion, the study revealed that family support is an important factor related to the social adjustment level in patients with chronic mental illnesses.

  • This study examines the effect of satisfaction with adolescent extracurricular activities on social withdrawal with a focus on the mediating effect of self-esteem and sense of community. We used data from the 3rd wave (2012) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) collected by the National Youth Policy Institute for path analysis. Participants were 1,139 first year middle school students who participated in adolescent extracurricular activities. First, the degree of satisfaction with the adolescent extracurricular activities had an indirect effect on social withdrawal via self-esteem. Second, satisfaction with the adolescent extracurricular activities had an indirect effect on social withdrawal via a sense of community. Lastly, satisfaction with adolescent extracurricular activities had an indirect effect on social withdrawal via self-esteem and a sense of community. The research findings indicate that the level of social withdrawal is less when adolescents are satisfied with adolescent extracurricular activities and have a high level of self-esteem and sense of community. The results demonstrate that a satisfactory level of adolescent extracurricular activity would help adolescents decrease their social withdrawal by increasing the level of self-esteem and sense of community.
