  • The Theory of Planned Behavior has been shown to yield great explanatory power in health behavior as well as social behavior. This study was conducted to test the Theory of Planned Behavior in the prediction and intention of smoking cessation behavior in university student smokers. We conveniently sampled 204 university student smokers and investigated using questionaries, analyzing the data with the Pearson product-moment correlation, and multiple regression. The results are as follows : 1. There are significant correlations in direct and indirect measures of attitude toward smoking cessation behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control. 2. Behavior belief is significant in predicting attitudes toward smoking cessation behavior. Normative belief is significant in predicting the subjective norm. Control belief is significant in predicting perceived behavioral control. 3. Attitude toward smoking cessation behavior, subjective norm are significant in predicting intention of smoking cessation behavior. In conclusion, this study demonstrated strong support for the Theory of the Planned Behavior and its use to predict smoking cessation behavior in university students smokers. But, as perceived behavioral control is not significant in predicting smoking cessation behavior, indepth research is needed to evaluate the usefullness of the Theory of Planned Behavior and Reasoned Action Theory.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics and preferences related to a smoking cessation program among college students to help college students quit smoking. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional survey to analyze collected data from 324 college students who had a positive reaction to a urine nicotine test. Collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics using SPSS 20.0. Results: The smoking amount per day of the participants was 4.1 pieces, and the average smoking period was 5.2 years. The mean of the CO level in exhaled air of the participants was 8.95 ppm. Their urge to smoke increased after a meal or while drinking alcohol. Most students wanted to quit smoking. Half of them were in a preparation phase to quit. Students wanted their willingness and determination to be reinforced (48%), and wanted to learn about specific smoking cessation methods (33%) through a smoking cessation program. Most of the students (60%) wanted an online program to help them quit smoking. Conclusion: To help students quit smoking, a online program that strengthens their determination to quit, and which contains specific methods to help them is needed.

  • Objectives: This study (a) investigated the rate of smoking cessation sucess for current male smokers, and (b) identified the factors that are associated with the smoking cessation success. Methods: Data were collected from four follow-up surveys of 700 current male smokers. The follow-up period was from December 2004 to June 2005. Success of smoking cessation was defined as "maintaining a smoking cessation status for six months". The demographic and socioeconomic factors included age, the household income level and, occupation. The smoking behavioral factors were composed of the amount of smoking, the duration of smoking, the age of initiating smoking, the willingness to quit, the frequency of trying to quit smoking and the smoker's attitude toward the anti-smoking policies. Results: The proportion of quitters increased from 6.6% to 11.0% during the follow-up period. The majority of quitters answered that the increase of tobacco price acted as cue to achieve smoking cessation. The age-standardized experience and success rate of smoking cessation were 16.0% (95% C.I.=13.0% to, 19.0%) and 4.5% (95% C.I.=3.0% to, 6.0%), respectively. On the multivariate analysis, success for smoking cessation was associated with the willingness to quit smoking, low prior tobacco consumption, and agreement on the tobacco price increase. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the recent anti-smoking policies provided an opportunity to quit smoking. The results of this study can be used to establish evidence for further anti-smoking policies.

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the stages of change in smoking cessation behavior and factors associated with the stages of smoking cessation behavior according to the trans-theoretical model. Methods: The subjects were 154 industrial workers working at H Industry in N City, Chonnam Province who were currently smoking and had smoked in the past. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple comparison test using SAS Version 10.0. Results: The subjects were distributed among the stages of change in smoking cessation behavior: there were 28 subjects (18.2%) in the precontemplation stage, 71 (46.1%) in the contemplation stage, 21 (13.6%) in the preparation stage, 8 (5.2%) in the action stage, and 26 (16.9%) in the maintenance stage. The amount of smoking per day, self-efficacy, and advantages (pros) of smoking were significantly associated with the stage of change in smoking cessation behavior. Conclusion: This study suggested that the stage of change in smoking cessation behavior of the subject should be identified prior to the application of intervention programs, nursing intervention strategies should be considered to reduce the amount of smoking per day, and the disadvantages of smoking should be perceived.

  • The average smoking rate for Adults' in our country is 40.6% : It is 74.2% for men and 5.0% for women. Particularly, the smoking rate for men is reported higher than that of men in U.S.A. or Japan. Since the first report on the association between smoking and cancer appeared, 370 thousand smokers have succeeded in smoking cessation and over 90% of them have responded that they depended on a self-help smoking cessation approach. Despite this positive evidence about self- help approaches for smoking cessation, most studies on smoking cessation have focused on evaluation of formal treatment programs that are provided by clinics. Reports on the smoking cessation process used by smokers in our country could not be found. However, it is believed that the situation in our country would be quite similar to that in U.S.A. as far as approaches to successful smoking cessation are concerned. This study was conducted to classify the smoking stage to which they smoker belong and which changing mechanisms could be included at each changing stage (precontemplation stage, comtemplation stage, action stage) with a sample of 155 college students between 20 and 29 years old. And it also identified which variables related both to smoking pattern and to health, which ones were significantly discriminating in the changing stages. From the results of the data analysis it was found that Self-Determination is the most influential variable as one of the changning mechanisms which can discriminate three changing stages. And as the next significant mechanisms were Reinforcement, Dramatic Relief, Cognitive Restructuring, Helping Relationship, and Information Management in that order. Among variables related to the smoking pattern, years of regular smoking, whether smoking is continued or not even when they are sick, the number of attempts to stop smoking, number of cigarettes smoked per day, and whether they have smoked over 100 cigarettes up to now, but not the time of the first cigarette after waking-up, were the significant factors to descriminate changing stages. It was confirmed that among variables related to health that, perceived control for health, confidence of health maintence ability, and self confidence in smoking cessation, were significant variables in determinating changing stages. The most influential variables among them was self-confidence in smoking cessation. Conclusively, it was shown that smoking cessation is the process of attempting to change smoking habits through the various changing processes. Also it can be shown that a few factors smoking habit, self-confidence of smoking cessation, and belief in self control of his /her health, were influential in discriminating the changing stages of the smoking habit.

  • This study was conducted to investigate determinants of intention of smoking cessation behavior. We sampled 204 university student smokers using questionaires and analyzed the data using the t-test, ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, and multiple regression. The results are as follows: 1. The attitudes concerning smoking cessation behavior are related to a student's course of study, religion and is further related to whether or not they tried to stop smoking. The subjective norm is related to smoking cessation recommendations. Perceived behavioral control is related to a growth criterion, the smoking amount and whether or not they have tried to stop smoking. The intention of smoking cessation behavior is related to smoking amount and whether or not they nare tried to stop smoking. 2. Total symptom number is related to smoking amount and smoking period. 3. Total symptom number is related to behavioral belief, attitude, and the intention to stop smoking. In conclusion, it was found that university students smoke far too much, however the intention to stop smoking is very low. Therefore, an intention promoting program of smoking cessation behavior is needed to reduce the smoking rate and relaxation therapy is necessary for in changing health promoting habits.

  • Objectives: This pilot study was designed to examine whether the adolescent smoking cessation program with harmonica therapy was effective or not. It was qualitatively explored perceived smoking consequences, cessation and relapse experience, specific harmonica help to overcome smoking urge, preference of harmonica toward cessation, and harmonica intervention planning to quit. Methods: The treatment program was conducted 30-minute, 6-session, and once a week basis. Qualitative data using Focus Group Interview were collected at the completion of the program with 6 participants, and analyzed by Krueger's systematic process. Results: Participants were smoking daily and consumed 3-10 cigarettes. They recognized undesirable smoking consequences in terms of cost, interpersonal relationship, and health that might lead to cessation attempts in the past. Participants who did not want to quit smoking at the program beginning changed their attitude to quit after exploring partial cessation efforts with the help of harmonica therapy. They believe harmonica's consistent help of quitting and leading to success. Conclusion: Adolescent attitudinal change toward smoking cessation has promising insight of motivation enhancement through harmonica therapy that was a major barrier to successful quit.

  • Increasing the rate of smoking cessation will reduce the burden of diseases related to smoking, including cancer. Understanding the process of smoking cessation is a pre-requisite to planning and developing effective programs to enhance the rate of smoking cessation. The aims of the study were to determine the demographic distribution of smokers across the initial stages of smoking cessation (the pre-contemplation and contemplation stages) and to identify the predictors of smoking cessation among Malaysian adult smokers. Data were extracted from a population-based, cross-sectional survey carried out from April 2006 to July 2006. The distribution of 2,716,743 current smokers across the pre-contemplation stage (no intention to quit smoking in the next six months) or contemplation stage (intended to quit smoking in the next six months) was described. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between socio-demographic variables and the stages of smoking cessation. Of the 2,716,743 current smokers, approximately 30% and 70% were in the pre-contemplative and contemplative stages of smoking cessation respectively. Multivariable analysis showed that male gender, low education level, older age group, married and those from higher income group and number of cigarettes smoked were associated with higher likelihood of pre-contemplation to cease smoking in the next six months. The majority of current smokers in Malaysia were in the contemplative stage of smoking cessation. Specific interventions should be implemented to ensure the pre-contemplative smokers proceed to the contemplative stage and eventually to the preparation stage.
