This paper presents a set of methods to evaluate the image quality of smartphone cameras as compared with that of a DSLR camera. In recent years, smartphone cameras have been used broadly for many purposes. As the performance of smartphone cameras has been enhanced considerably, they can be considered to be used for precise mapping instead of metric cameras. To evaluate the possibility, we tested the quality of one DSLR camera and 3 smartphone cameras. In the first step, we compare the amount of lens distortions inherent in each camera using camera calibration sheet images. Then, we acquired target sheet images, extracted reference lines from them and evaluated the geometric quality of smartphone cameras based on the amount of errors occurring in fitting a straight line to observed points. In addition, we present a method to evaluate the radiometric quality of the images taken by each camera based on planar fitting errors. Also, we propose a method to quantify the geometric quality of the selected camera using edge displacements observed in target sheet images. The experimental results show that the geometric and radiometric qualities of smartphone cameras are comparable to those of a DSLR camera except lens distortion parameters.

As the tendency of children's overdependence on smart phones increased, it was obligatory to carry out preventive education more than once a year in kindergarten and day care center, but there is no specific guidance on contents and method of preventive education. This is due to the lack of prior studies on the actual use of smartphones and the influence variables of infants and young children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of use time, frequency of use, and sociological background variables on the actual situation of smartphone usage and overdependency on smartphone among 3-5 year old children nationwide. For the analysis, the frequency of the use of smartphone for 3-5 year old children was analyzed by frequency analysis, and the influence variables were correlated and multiple regression analysis. Research shows that smartphone overdependence of 3-5 year old children have an influence on the use time and frequency of use. The results should include content that restricts the use time and frequency of use of smartphones and prevention education programs for 3-5 year olds and young children. Suggesting a need for a transition to the educational method used.
Objective: This study aimed to examine the moderating effect of elementary school students' perception of open communication with their parents in relationship to smartphone dependency and school adjustment. Methods: Participants included 300 fifth and sixth graders attending P and A elementary schools in Gyeonggi Province. Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were performed to analyze data. The level of significance was set at p < .05 for all analyses. Results: The results of the present study are as follows: First, male students showed higher levels of smartphone dependency than female students, and students' smartphone dependency increased according to age. The students' smartphone dependency was negatively associated with their school adjustment and their perception of open communication with their parents. Second, the students' perception of open communication with their fathers was found to moderate the relationship between smartphone dependency and school adjustment. Conclusion/Implications: These findings indicate that open communication between parents and their elementary school-aged children can buffer the adverse effects of smartphone dependency on school adjustment. This study provides implications for parent education and counseling to improve parent-child communication and subsequently build strong, positive family relationships.
Purpose: This study was to form a healthy smartphone culture and serve as basic materials for developing smartphone addiction intervention program by understanding mental health and physical health of college students caused by smartphone addiction. Methods: The data collected from 261 college students at G and S city universities who understood the purpose of this study and consented to take part in the study were analyzed on mean, standard deviation, frequency, Chi square test and t-test using SPSS 20.0. Results: The result showed that the level of smartphone addiction was significantly different according to gender, age, type of college, satisfaction with college life and satisfaction with family life. The smartphone addiction risk group showed higher score in life stress, depression, social avoidance and distress than the general user group and the physical health was also higher in the risk group than the general user group. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop and apply customized intervention plan per each person's characteristics and level of addiction to prevent addiction and improve health condition from overuse of smartphone.
Purpose: This study aims to prevent Smartphone addiction and provide a basic material for intervention strategy by inquiring into the correlation between interpersonal relations competency and Smartphone addiction. Methods: This study carried out a questionnaire survey oriented to 323 people who agreed to participate in this research. For the final analysis, this study selected 298 sheets of questionnaires excluding 25 sheets with insufficient response qualities. Results: According to the results of regression analysis, significant correlation between interpersonal relations competency and Smartphone addiction level was not observed. However, according to the results of correlation analysis, the subordinate factor of Smartphone addiction "directionality of virtual world" showed a significant negative correlation with "opinion expression regarding rights or refusal" of interpersonal relations competency (p<0.05), while "withdrawal," the subordinate factor of interpersonal relations competency and Smartphone addiction displayed a negative correlation with Smartphone addiction (p<0.05). Conclusion : However, the mean of the 3DP group was within the clinical tolerance suggested by the previous researchers. Based on this, dental prosthesis fabricated by 3D printing technology is considered to be clinically acceptable.
This study was conducted for the purpose of empirically analyzing the effects of adolescents' relationships with major adults as protective factors for smartphone addiction. Specifically, the study compared the discriminatory effects of adolescents' relationships with their parents, school teachers, and educational institute teachers on smartphone addiction among elementary, middle, and high school students in Korea. Analyzing the data of the 2019 Korean Children & Youth Happiness Index (N=7,454), it was found that relationships with adults were significant factors in explaining the level of smartphone addiction even after controlling for the influences of adolescents' demographics, usage time, and friendship factors. For elementary school students, good relationships with their mothers and school teachers decreased the risk of smartphone addiction. On the other hand, in the case of middle school students, only a good relationship with father functioned as a protective factor. Good relationships with their fathers and institute teachers decreased the level of high school students' smartphone addiction. Based on these findings, this study discussed on the development of programs and policies for prevention and intervention of adolescents' smartphone addiction and provided suggestions for follow-up research in the future.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the level of agreement between smartphone apps and self-reported physical activity questionnaires. Methods: Quantitative methods were used to assess the correlation and agreement between the number of steps counted by a smartphone app and the amount of walking reported in a survey. A total of 29 adults who used smartphones were recruited from a university, and their step counts from their smartphone pedometers and responses to the international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ) were collected over a 10-week period. Results: An analysis of 170 data pairs with Spearman's rho correlation and a Bland-Altman plot revealed a positive correlation between step counts from the smartphone app and walking activity from the IPAQ. The Bland-Altman plot also demonstrated the agreement to be improved among female participants. Conclusion: In assessing walking activity, smartphone pedometer apps showed good correlation with the IPAQ and improved agreement with the IPAQ among women. Therefore, it is suggested that the participants' gender and activity intensity, as well as the accuracy of measurement tools, should be considered in an evaluation of the delivery of physical activity promotion programs through smartphone apps.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify parental factors associated with smartphone overuse in preschoolers. Methods: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Relevant studies published in peer-reviewed journals from 2009 to June 2019 were identified through systematic search in 10 electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Central, EMBASE, Web of Science, NDSL, KISS, KMbase, KoreaMed, and RISS). Standardized effect sizes were calculated to quantify the associations of parental factors with smartphone overuse in preschoolers using meta-analysis. Results: A total of 30 cross-sectional studies involving 7,943 participants met the inclusion criteria. The following were negatively correlated with smartphone overuse in preschoolers: mother's parenting self-efficacy (r=-.35), mother-child attachment (r=-.28), mother's positive parenting behavior (r=-.28), mother's positive parenting attitude (r=-.25), and father's parenting involvement (r=-.15). Further, maternal factors such as smartphone addiction tendency (r=.41), parenting stress (r=.40), negative parenting behavior (r=.35), negative parenting attitude (r=.14), smartphone usage time (r=.26), employment status (r=.18), and age (r=.12) were positively correlated with smartphone overuse in preschoolers. Conclusion: Several parental factors influence smartphone overuse in preschoolers. These findings emphasize the need to assess and enhance the parental factors identified in this study to prevent smartphone overuse in preschoolers. Accordingly, we recommend the development of preventive interventions to strengthen parent-related protective factors and mitigate risk factors.
Internet overdependence has become a public health concern in Korea. It is well known that family and community level efforts could alleviate possible harms from Internet use. However, little research exists regarding smartphone overdependence. This study examines factors affecting smartphone overdependence and, specifically, help-seeking for smartphone overdependence among Korean adolescents. The study is based on parental mediation theory and uses a help-seeking framework. The results indicate that preventative education provided by school and community increases the levels of awareness of both the possible harms from smartphone use and the option of accessing the mental health service, while it was not effective in preventing smartphone overdependence. Parental mediation was a protective factor for smartphone overdependence but was negatively associated with the intention to use the mental health service. In sum, behavioral problems related to smartphone use require multidimensional preventative efforts from both the family and the community. It is suggested that effective preventive education methods are developed for parents and adolescents.
