  • A non-contact, in-situ and non-invasive technique for health monitoring of submerged fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) laminates has been developed using ultrasonic guided waves. A pair of mobile transducers at specific angles of incidence to the submerged FRP specimen was used to excite Lamb wave modes. Lamb wave modes were used for comprehensive inspection of various types of manufacturing defects like air gaps and missing epoxy, introduced during manufacturing of FRP using Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion Molding (VARIM). Further service induced damages like notches and surface defects were also studied and evaluated using guided waves. Quantitative evaluation of transmitted ultrasonic signal in defect ridden FRPs $vis-{\grave{a}}-vis$ healthy signal has been used to relate the extent of damage in FRPs. The developed technique has the potential to develop into a quick, real time health monitoring tool for judging the service worthiness of FRPs.

  • Thermo-mechanical behavior and mechanical properties of intelligent polymer matrix composite with SMA fiber are experimentally studied. It is found that increments of compressive thermal strain is observed as the pre-strain and TiNi volume fraction increase. The smartness of the SMA is given due to the shape memory effect of the TiNi fiber which generates compressive residual stress in the matrix material when heated after being prestrained. In the paper, alloy is based on the general purpose commercial code ANSYS. And for the purpose of easy and fast user's analysis, it is developed the Graphical User Interface by using Tcl/Tk language.

  • Cellulose based electro-active paper (EAPap) is a new smart material that has a potential to be used in biomimetic actuator and sensor. Beside of the natural abundance, cellulose EAPap is fascinating with its biodegradability, lightweight, high mechanical strength and low actuation voltage. An actuating mechanism of EAPap is revealed to be the combination of ion migration effect and piezoelectricity. EAPap can generate the electrical current and voltage when the mechanical stress applied due to its electro-mechanical characteristics. In this paper, we investigated the feasibility of EAPap as a mechanical strain sensor.

  • Cellulose based electro-active paper(EAPap) is considered as a new smart material which has a potential to be used for biomimetic actuators and sensors. Beside of the natural abundance, cellulose EAPap is fascinating with its biodegradability, lightweight, high mechanical strength and low actuation voltage. When the external stress is applied to EAPap, it can generate the electrical output due to its piezoelectric property. Using piezoelectric behavior of EAPap, we studied the feasibility of EAPap as mechanical strain sensor applications and compared to commercial strain sensor. By measuring the induced output voltage from the thin piezoelectric cellulose EAPap under static and dynamic force, we propose cellulose EAPap film as a potential strain sensor material.

  • Recently, it has been developed for Eco-environment, Super light, Multi-functional nano materials. As needed mobile parts in Smart phone or TV, computer, information communication for high pass signal, multi-function, Magnetic thin film materials have been developed. As last, magnetic powder, sintered and sputtering parts were thick and low purity than electroplating layer, low pass signal and noise were resulted, vibrated TV screen. Because chemical complex temperature was high and ununiform surface layer, it has been very difficult for data pass in High Frequency (GHz) area. Large capacity data pass is used to GHz. Above GHz, signal pass velocity is dependent on Skin Effect of surface layer. If surface layer is thick or ununiform, attachment is poor, low pass signal and cross talk, noise are produced and leaked. It has been reported technical trend of Electrochemically plating and Surface treatment of Metal, Polymer, Ceramic etc. by dispersion/complex for Multi functional nano-magnetic material in this paper.

  • The cellulose smart material called electro-active paper (EAPap) is made by regenerating cellulose. However, the actuator performance is degraded at low humidity levels. To solve this drawback, EAPap bending actuators were made by activating wet cellulose films in three different room-temperature ionic liquids: l-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexaflurophosphate ($BMIPF_6$), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMICL) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluroborate ($BMIBF_4$). In the results, the actuator performance was dependent on the type of anions in the ionic liquids, in the order of $BF_4$>Cl>$PF_6$. The BMIBF 4-activated actuator showed the maximum displacement of 3.8 mm with low electrical power consumption at relatively low humidity. However, the BMICL-activated actuator showed a slight degradation of actuator performance. Further performance and durability improvement will be possible once various ionic liquids are blended with cellulose.

  • In the conventional AF lens actuating system the VCM actuator is used. However due to the actuating mechanism, the VCM actuator has disadvantage in miniaturizing which is essential to the actuator for the mobile device. Therefore novel type actuator is required and the one of the candidate is actuator using electoractive polymer (EAP). The EAP actuator is one of the attractive smart materials that is light and can be easily fabricated with low cost. This paper proposes an AF lens actuator for mobile phone using dielectric elastomer. The proposed actuator was designed and analyzed using finite element method. The designed actuator is verified by experiment and the position control algorithm is applied.

  • Electronic skin (or E-skin) is an artificial smart skin composed of one or more than two sensors. E-skins detect external stimuli and convert them into electrical signals. Various types of E-skin sensors exist, including mechanical, physical, and chemical, depending on the detection signals involved. For wearable E-skins with superior sensitivity and reliability, developing conductors that possess both good elasticity and sensitivity is essential. Typical electrical conductors used in these sensors show very high sensitivity, but they have drawbacks such as non-linearity, irreversibility, and a narrow sensing range. To address these issues, stretchable and lightweight ionic conductors have been actively used in E-skin applications. This study summarizes the recent progress on various types of ionic conductors and ionic-conductor-based E-skin sensors.

  • This paper reviews recent developments and applications of dielectric elastomers (DEs) and suggests various techniques to improve DE properties. DEs as smart materials are a variety of electro-active polymers (EAPs) that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and cause a large deformation when a voltage is applied. The dielectric constant, modulus, and dielectric loss of DEs determine the efficiency of deformation. Among these, the dielectric constant significantly affects their performance. Therefore, various recent approaches to improve the dielectric constant are reviewed, including the enhancement of polarization, introduction of microporous structures in the matrix, and introduction of ferroelectric fillers. Furthermore, the basic principles of DEs are examined, as well as their various applications such as actuators, generators, sensors, and artificial muscles.

  • In this report, we summarize recent progress in the development of electrolyte-gated transistors (EGTs) for various printed electronics. EGTs, employing a high capacitance electrolyte as gate dielectric layer in transistors, exhibits increasing of drive current, lowering operation voltage, and new transistor architectures. While the use of electrolytes in electronics goes back to the early days of silicon transistors, the new printable, fast-responsive polymer electrolytes are expanding their range of applications from printable and flexible digital circuits to various neuromorphic devices. This report introduces the structure and operating mechanism of EGT and reviews key developments in electrolyte materials used in printed electronics. Additionally, we will look at various applications with EGTs that are currently underway.
