Development of Accident-prevention Smart Monitoring System for Woman Diver using Zigbee Module and GPS Sensor (Zigbee와 GPS를 이용한 해녀 사고예방 스마트 모니터링 시스템 개발)

  • In this paper, we propose an accident-prevention smart monitoring system for Haenyeo(Woman diver) using Zigbee module and GPS sensor. This system can collect such information as the diving location, the body temperature, the depth of diving, and the diving time of a Woman diver working under the water and then respond immediately to an accident occurring. The research developed a smart Teawak and smart swimming goggles which can measure the state of a Woman diver and her diving activities. Smart Teawak, the buoy tool while a Woman diver is collecting seafoods under water, is able to receive GPS and transmit the data from smart swimming goggles and Zigbee Module to IHSS(IoT based Haenyeo Safety service Software) server. In addition, IHSS, a responsive web, provides the diving location and the state of a Woman diver on the smart phone. As a result, the system will be useful in the aspects of Woman diver' health care and the safety, furthermore, which will significantly contribute to global marketing of Woman diver with its being designated as a UNESCO intangible cultural asset.

Developing and Applying Smart Tourism Cities Competitiveness Index (스마트관광도시 경쟁력 지표 개발과 적용)

  • Keen attention has been directed at "smart tourism cities" due to its role of solving urban problems arising from modern tourism development. However, some local governments are making huge investments in developing uniform tourism apps without specific directions or guidelines for the transformation of smart tourism cities. Accordingly, this study aims to develop a standardized and objective smart tourism competitiveness index and evaluate the competitiveness rankings of various cities around the world. The index comprises the five subindices of attractiveness, accessibility, digitalization readiness, sustainability, and co-partnership. The analysis results have shown that Singapore is the most competitive smart tourism city, followed by Amsterdam, New York City, Seoul and Barcelona, with Ho Chi Minh and Bangkok being relegated to the bottom of competitiveness rankings. We expect that this index can be employed as a global standard for continuously and systematically monitoring smart tourism city-related projects in the future.

  • Over the last few decades, various innovative technologies have emerged that have significantly contributed to making life easier for humans. Various information and communication technologies (ITCs) have emerged as a result of the global technological revolution, including big data, IoT, 4G and 5G networks, cloud computing, mobile computing, and artificial intelligence. These technologies have been adopted in urban planning and development, which gave rise to the concept of smart cities in the 1990s. A smart city is a type of city that uses ITCs to exchange and share information to enhance the quality of services for its citizens. With the global population increasing at unprecedented levels, cities are overwhelmed with a myriad of challenges, such as the energy crisis, environmental pollution, sanitation and sewage challenges, and water quality issues, and therefore, have become a convergence point of economic, social, and environmental risks. The concept of a smart city is a multidisciplinary, unified approach that has been adopted by governments and municipalities worldwide to overcome these challenges. Though challenging, this transformation is essential for cities with differing technological and social features, which all have the potential to determine the success or failure of the digital transformation of cities into smart cities. In recent years, researchers, businesses, and the government have all turned their attention to the emerging field of smart cities. Accordingly, this paper aims to represent a thorough understanding of the movement toward smart cities. The key themes identified are smart city definitions and concepts, smart city dimensions, and smart city architecture of different layers. Furthermore, this article discusses the challenges and some examples of smart cities.

Development of Smart Driving System Using iPod and Its Performance Evaluation for People with Severe Physical Disabilities in the Driving Simulator

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to develop the adaptive device for severe physical disabilities using smart device in the driving simulator and its performance evaluation. Development of appropriate driving adaptive device for the people with serious physical limitation could contribute to maintain their community mobility. Background: There is lack of adaptive driving devices for the people with disabilities in Korea. However, if smart device systems like iPod and iPhone are used for driving a car, the people with serious physical limitations can improve their community mobility. Method: Both gyroscope and accelerometer from iPod were used to measure the tilted angle of the smart device for driving. Customized Labview program was also used to control three axis motors for steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedals. Thirteen subjects were involved in the experiment for performance evaluation of smart device in simulator. Five subjects had driver licenses. Another four subjects did not have driver licenses. Others were people with disabilities. Results: Average driving score of the normal group with driver license in the simulator increased 46.6% compared with the normal group without driver license and increased 30.4% compared with the disabled group(p<0.01). There was no significant difference in the average driving score between normal group without driver license and disabled group(p>0.05). Conclusion: The normal group with driver license showed significantly higher driving score than other groups. The normal group without driver license and disabled group could improve their driving skills with training in simulator. Application: If follow-up studies would be continued and applied in adapted vehicle for on road environment, many people with more severe disabilities could drive and improve the quality of life.

HB+ protocol-based Smart OTP Authentication (HB+ 프로토콜 기반의 스마트 OTP 인증)

  • OTP(One time password) is widely used as an authentication method for financial and other security-sensitive transactions. OTP provides strong security since each password is used only one time while normal password-based authentications use passwords as long term secrets. However, OTP-based authentications relatively lack usability since they require users to hold an OTP card or generator. To overcome such a problem, smartphones start replacing OTP cards and such a method is called smart OTP. However, smart OTP inherits security vulnerabilities that smartphones have. In this paper, we propose a smart OTP authentication based on an extremely light authentication protocol called HB+. HB+ protocol is developed for low-cost devices and has small communication and computation costs. We present our solution and discuss its security, efficiency and practicality. Our contribution is providing a method to securely use smart OTP without losing its efficiency and usability.

  • Recently, smart phones are spread out as a universal mobile terminal equipment. Its provide USB interface to connect with various devices. Smart phones may be replaced with high priced monitoring equipments because of portability and mobility as its merit. In addition to that, the various sensor devices detecting surrounding environment of the radioactivity, sodium or electromagnetic waves have been announced. But the plug and play methods of sensor devices have some problem to connect smart phone with USB accessory device. We propose an integrated methodology that can connect smart phone with USB sensor devices and also, we realized USB accessory plug and play with one App that can collect measurement data through various sensor devices.

Fabrication of Shell Actuator using Woven Type Smart Soft Composite (직조 형태의 지능형 연성 복합재료를 이용한 쉘 구동기의 제작)

  • Smart material such as SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) has been studied in various ways because it can perform continuous, flexible, and complex actuation in simple structure. Smart soft composite (SSC) was developed to achieve large deformation of smart material. In this paper, a shell actuator using woven type SSC was developed to enhance stiffness of the structure while keeping its deformation capacity. The fabricated actuator consisted of a flexible polymer and woven structure which contains SMA wires and glass fibers. The actuator showed various actuation motions by controlling a pattern of applied electricity because the SMA wires are embedded in the structure as fibers. To verify the actuation ability, we measured its maximum end-edge bending angle, twisting angle, and actuating force, which were $103^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, and 0.15 N, respectively.

Bus Information System based on Smart-Phone Apps using GPS Information (위치정보를 활용한 스마트폰 기반의 버스정보시스템)

  • This paper provides Bus Information System(BIS) implementation based on the Smart-phone APPs using GPS information. Nearly all of recent smart-phones are equipped with the GPS feature. Bus driver's smart-phone can send the position information using its GPS information periodically and on events. On receiving those information, servers can process those into the information that can be used by individual users and bus stop information panel. The proposed BIS based on smart-phone APPs is expected to be used publicly with the special process that enables the smart-phone APPs only in the specific bus.

  • This paper introduces a prototype smart home environment that is built in the research building to demonstrate the feasibility of a robot-assisted future home environment. Localization, navigation, object recognition and handling are core functionalities that an intelligent service robot should provide. A huge amount of research effort has been made to make the service robot perform these functions with its own sensors, actuators and a knowledge base. With all complicated configuration of sensors, actuators and a database, the robot could only perform the given tasks in a predefined environment or show the limited capabilities in a natural environment. We started a smart home environment for service robots for simple service robots to provide reliable services by communicating with the environment through the wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we introduce various types of smart devices that are developed for assisting the robot in the environment by providing sensor and actuator capabilities. In addition, we present how the devices are integrated to constitute the smart home environment for service robots.

MR fluid damper-based smart damping systems for long steel stay cable under wind load

  • Long steel stay cables, which are mainly used in cable-stayed bridges, are easy to vibrate because of their low inherent damping characteristics. A lot of methods for vibration reduction of stay cables have been developed, and several techniques of them have been implemented to real structures, though each has its limitations. Recently, it was reported that smart (i.e. semi-active) dampers can potentially achieve performance levels nearly the same as comparable active devices with few of the detractions. Some numerical and experimental studies on the application of smart damping systems employing an MR fluid damper, which is one of the most promising smart dampers, to a stay cable were carried out; however, most of the previous studies considered only one specific control algorithm in which they are interested. In this study, the performance verification of MR fluid damper-based smart damping systems for mitigating vibration of stay cables by considering the four commonly used semi-active control algorithms, such as the control algorithm based on Lyapunov stability theory, the maximum energy dissipation algorithm, the modulated homogeneous friction algorithm and the clipped-optimal control algorithm, is systematically carried out to find the most appropriate control strategy for the cable-damper system.
