A 4-year-old, spayed female German Shepherd dog (GSD) weighing 22.4 kg was referred to Chungnam National University Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital with the chief complaint of a cardiac murmur. A continuous murmur was detected at the left basilar region upon auscultation. In the thoracic radiographs, slight bulging of the aorta, the main pulmonary artery, and the left atrium were observed. Echocardiography revealed continuous turbulent flow directed from the main pulmonary artery towards the pulmonary valve and consistently within the main pulmonary artery. Based on all the results, a diagnosis of type II A patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) was made, and plans were established to treat it with transcatheter occlusion. Transcatheter occlusion was performed using a vascular plug and successfully deployed at the PDA. The patient did not exhibit any complications. GSDs are relatively less common compared to small-breed dogs in South Korea. Considering that GSDs are predisposed to PDA, it is crucial to periodically assess the presence of PDA through auscultation and echocardiography, even in the absence of clinical signs. Transcatheter occlusion using a vascular plug can be an option for treatment and can yield favorable outcomes.
A 3-year-old, 20.6 kg, neutered male German Shepherd dog was referred to Kyungpook National University Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital. Clinical examination revealed chronic diarrhea for 6 weeks and a non-tender, distended abdomen without lethargy, anorexia, and vomiting. Diarrhea was watery and had a waxing and waning course despite symptomatic treatment. A complete blood count identified mild leukocytosis and mild anemia. Serum biochemistry analysis showed elevated alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels, and mild hypoalbuminemia. Abdominal ultrasound examination revealed mixed echogenicity with absent blood flow at the caudate process of the caudate liver lobe and a small amount of ascites. Computed tomography revealed torsion of the caudate process of the caudate liver lobe and spleen and gas dilatation of the intestine. After establishing a diagnosis of organ torsion on imaging, we deemed the condition an emergency and immediately performed surgery. Given that laparotomy confirmed organ torsion, liver lobectomy, total splenectomy, and prophylactic gastropexy were conducted. The patient was discharged 11 days after surgery without complications. In general, liver lobe torsion and splenic torsion are uncommon in dogs and present with nonspecific clinical signs, such as abdominal pain, lethargy, anorexia, and vomiting. In the current case, torsion of the caudate liver lobe and spleen occurred without other clinical signs except for a distended abdomen. Moreover, no reports in dogs have demonstrated the simultaneous occurrence of both diseases.

Cardiopulmonary depression of long-term constant rate infusion (CRI) administration of multiple analgesic drugs is important, especially in critically ill dogs. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of lidocaine, ketamine or combined lidocaine-ketamine combination CRI treatment on vital signs and left ventricular (LV) function in healthy dogs. Six adult Beagle dogs were administered either ketamine (initial loading dose of 0.5 mg/kg followed by $10{\mu}g/kg/min$ CRI), lidocaine (initial loading dose of 2 mg/kg followed by 0.025 mg/kg/min CRI), or combined lidocaine-ketamine intravenously. Arterial blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), body temperature (BT) and echocardiographic LV dimensions were measured before administration of medications, immediately after administration of drugs, and then every 10 min for 2 h. There were no significant changes in HR, RR, BT and BP after the administration of either lidocaine CRI, ketamine CRI, or combined lidocaine and ketamine CRI. There were also no significant changes in LV dimensions and stroke volume. The results revealed that treatment with either lidocaine, ketamine or combined lidocaine-ketamine may not cause cardiopulmonary suppression in healthy dogs.
This study was performed to investigate the best surgical technique for normal stifle mobility by comparison with clinical signs and histopathological changes of articular cartilage after femoral trochleoplasty, trochlear chondroplasty and trochlear wedge recession. Twelve small mixed dogs who had grade I or II medial patellar luxation were used. The days that the dog had partial and full weight bearing were checked and histopathological changes 49 and 90 days after surgery were observed. The dogs had partial weight bearing in 3~6 days postoperatively and full weight bearing in 20~24 days. After femoral trochlepoplasty, the articular surface was irregular and rough, but smooth after trochlear chondroplasty and trochlear wedge recession. Histopathologic examination performed on the 49th and 90th days after femoral trochleoplasty revealed that articular surface was occupied by fibrocartilage but the hyaline cartilages are preserved after trochlear chondroplasty and trochlear wedge recession. In trochlear wedge recession, the wedges of all cases were firmly attached to underlying subchondral bone which were indicating complete healing. The results of this study suggested that the trochlear wedge recession was the best chondroplasty for correcting patellar luxation.
While ranitidine is well known to be absorbed rapidly, the underlying cause of variable bioavailability in intra- and inter-subjects has not been clarified yet. Intestinal permeability is a key controlling factor for oral absorption of highly soluble drugs, In the present study, intestinal ferfusions have been conducted to determine the intestinal permeabilities(Peffs) of ranitidine in the rats, dogs and humans and compared to the estimated fractions of dose absorbed (FAs) in humans. A new in vivo methodology, using a regional segmental perfusion technique, has been used in the dogs and humans. In situ single-pass perfusion experiments have been performed in the rats. In the dog and human studies, perfusion experiments have been conducted on two periods to determine the intrasubject variability, There was low significant intrasubject variation as compared to intersubject variation. The Peffs of ranitidine were 33%, 51%, and 45% inthe rats, dogs and humans, respectively. The FAs were approximately the same for all three species models, suggesting rats and dogs are good animal models for estimating the oral absorption of ranitidine in humans. In addition, the estimated extent of absorption of this drug is consistent with the average bioavailability, indicating that ranitidine has permeability-limited absorption characteristics. Malassezia pachydermatis is a commensal yeast found on the skin of dogs. However, M. pachydermatis is also considered an opportunistic pathogen and is associated with various canine skin diseases including otitis externa and atopic dermatitis, which usually require treatment using an azole antifungal drug, such as ketoconazole. In this study, we isolated a ketoconazole-resistant strain of M. pachydermatis, designated "KCTC 27587," from the external ear canal of a dog with otitis externa and analyzed its resistance mechanism. To understand the mechanism underlying ketoconazole resistance of the clinical isolate M. pachydermatis KCTC 27587, the whole genome of the yeast was sequenced using the PacBio platform and was compared with M. pachydermatis type strain CBS 1879. We found that a ~84-kb region in chromosome 4 of M. pachydermatis KCTC 27587 was tandemly quadruplicated. The quadruplicated region contains 52 protein coding genes, including the homologs of ERG4 and ERG11, whose overexpression is known to be associated with azole resistance. Our data suggest that the quadruplication of the ~84-kb region may be the cause of the ketoconazole resistance in M. pachydermatis KCTC 27587.
A neutered male, 8-year-old, Pekingese, weighing 4.3 kg with a history of anorexia, sneezing, nasal discharge, and epistaxis for one month was referred. Soft tissue swelling around the nasal bone and small defects of the hard palate with a tiny round dark red mass were found on physical examination. The laboratory tests represented mild leukocytosis. On skull radiographs, soft tissue swelling and osteolytic change of the incisor bone, nasal bone, and maxilla were found. On computed tomography scan images, there was soft tissue attenuating opacity with calcified spots in the bilateral nasal cavities and frontal sinuses. Loss of nasal turbinate pattern and nasal septum was found. And destruction of the insicor bone, nasal bone, maxilla, hard palate, perpendicular palatine bone, and cribriform plate were identified. Nasal malignant melanoma was confirmed by nasal biopsy.
