  • The test did for the determine the optimized ratio of cation to anion in mixed ion exchange demineralizers. Binary, ternary, quaternary, and quinary cation and anion adsorption was performed to develop a comprehensive experimental data set from small-volume batch tests to obtain the selectivity coefficients of many cations and anions. The quantitative run time might be estimated by such ion exchange models as semi-empirical mass action and surface complexation models. The demineralizer can be used longer by increasing the ratios of cation to anion exchange resins in the bed.

  • It has been very difficult to analyse, clearly, the mechanism of the suspended sediment that changes, largely, the coastline, on-shore and off-shore. It is due to not only the complexity of the factors in nature but the measurement technique of suspended sediment characteristics both in nature and loboratory. The purpose of this paper are to obtain the time-rate of change in the concentration of suspended sediment, the vertical distribution of it and the effect of the fall velocity of its particle, and to make clear the mechanism of sand transportation in suspension, analysing the diffusion equation, by the computer, due to the small amplitude wave theory.

  • Reconnaissance robots can reduce the danger of hazardous places by providing information before human personnel take action. For the usage, robot platform should be small and light. However, this fact leads to a scaling issue with terrain that landscape poses a huge obstacle for the vehicle. The problem can be solved by the inspiration of nature. This paper presents design of the locomotive mechanism inspired by Pill bugs. The mechanism was designed by the principles of a pill bug's locomotion and experiments were conducted to validate the mechanism.

  • Recent observations reveal that the Tsushima Current has a double-cored structure downstream of the Tsushima Island. To explain this, a simple analytical model is proposed based on the assumption of small lateral eddy viscosity. This model suggests that an otherwise uniform current becomes to have a stream core immediately after it enters a channel due to the action of lateral friction. The core is initially broad but becomes sharper downstream. The speed at which the core develops depends on the intensity of lateral eddy viscosity. Likewise, a single-cored stream changes rapidly to a double-cored stream when it passes through an island located in the center of the channel. When the stream leaves the island behind, the reverse process from the double-to single-cored structures takes place. In this case, however, the double-cored structure is retained for a significant distance from the island. Overall, this model suggests that the double-cored structure of the Tsushima Current observed downstream of the Tsushima Island Is created by the lateral friction exerted by the Tsushima Island.

  • Recombinant bioluminescent bacteria and cultured human cells were applied for toxicogenomic analysis of environmentally hazardous chemicals. Recombinant bioluminescent biosensing cells were used to detect and classify the toxicity caused by various chemicals. Classification of toxicity was realized based upon the chemicals' mode of action using DNA-, oxidative-, protein, and membrane-damage sensitive strains. As well, a simple double-layered cell culture system using Caco-2 cells and Hep G2 cells, which mimic the metabolic processes occurring in humans, such as adsorption through the small intestine and biotransformationin both the small intestine and the liver, was developed to investigate the toxicity of hazardous materials to humans. For a more in-depth analysis, a DNA microarray was used to study the transcriptional responses of Caco-2 and Hep G2 cells to benzo〔a〕pyrene.

  • It well known that the magnitude of contraction and the shape of action potential depend upon the stimulation frequency and the duration of resting period (positive and negative staircase). Although the underlying mechanism of the staircase phenomenon is not fully understood, it has been suggested that staircase could be related to the intracllular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration. In order to elucidate the role of intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ on the contraction and action potential staircases, we examined the effects of 1 mM 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), 0.5 uM verapamil, 1 uM ryanodine, or reduction of extracellular Na concentration to 30% $(substituted\;by\;equimolar\;Li^+)$ in small atrial strips of the rabbit $(3{\times}10\;mm)$. The results obitained were as follows; 1) When the stimulation frequency was increased from 0.1 Hz to 2 Hz, positive staircase of the contraction and elevation of plateau level in action potential were found in control and the conditions of Na reduction and treatments of 4-AP, verapamil and ryanodine. 2) When stimulation frequency returned to 0.1 Hz from 1 min rest just after 2 Hz stimulation fer 1 min, the magnitudes of initial few contractions were larger than that of steady state contraction (post-rest potentiation) except, ryanodine or Na-reduction groups. 3) Negative staircase of contraction was developed in control and 4-AP group at post-rest 0.1 Hz stimulation and the plateau level of the action potential was decreased at the same time. But the reduction of contraction or the plateau level was much smaller in 4-AP group and than in control. From the above results it can be concluded that contraction and action potential staircase is dependent upon transmembrane $Ca^{2+}-current\;and\;Ca^{2+}$release from the SR.

  • The purpose of this study examined the feasibility and efficacy of a senior center-based diabetes self-management program applying action research approach. The cyclical action research method was applied for this study: plan, act, evaluate, and reflect in delivering three waves of the intervention program. Three waves of a 12 weeks-length small group diabetes self-management program were offered during the period of 15 months in a senior center in Seoul. Planning of $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ wave program were based on reflection of $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ program evaluation respectively. Among the 46 participants, 93.48% (N=43) completed the program. The quantitative evaluation showed statistically significant improvement in HbA1C(p<.001), fasting plasma glucose(p<.001), BMI(p=.016), waist circumference(p=.001), systolic blood pressure(p=.036), diabetes self-management behavior(p<.001) and health knowledge(p=.008). Qualitative data revealed that individual management was very helpful in empowering and adhering for own diabetes care for the participants. Participants reported high satisfaction towards the program with mean satisfaction score of 65.12. Application of the Diabetes Self-management program with action study strategy was successful in community setting for improving participants' subjective and objective outcomes. Action research method guides the practitioner to tailor the program to respond for the participants and field needs.

  • Purpose - Despite that the importance of small enterprises' performance in the community has been magnified, no study has been conducted yet on the performance based on consumers directly faced by small enterprises. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the relationship between the life styles of consumers who use small enterprises' stores by type and the word of mouth(WOM) effects, which are concrete behaviors of consumers. Research design, data, and methodology - The VALS classification system was utilized to classify the types of life styles of consumers who use small enterprises' stores. The consumers were divided into a total of four types. This study was intended to investigate the effects of the types of consumers on the word of mouth(WOM) effects of consumers who use small enterprises' stores along with the effects of consumers' perception of economic situations on their word of mouth(WOM) effects after using small enterprises' stores. Results - The results of the study indicated that among the types of consumers who use small enterprises' stores, the group that pursues faith and the group that pursues knowledge had positive (+) effects on favorable word of mouth(WOM) effects. However, the group that pursues trends and the group that pursues action were shown to have no effect and positive or negative perceptions of economic situations were shown to have no effects of the word of mouth(WOM) effects of users of small enterprises' stores. Conclusions - In this study, as a measure to create small enterprises' performance, word of mouth(WOM) effects on small enterprises' stores according to consumers' consumption behaviors were examined focusing on consumers. Through the study results, the groups of consumers who use small enterprises' stores by type that provide favorable word of mouth(WOM) effects were derived. And This Study aims to investigate the relationship between the four type life styles of consumer who use small enterprises' stores and the word of mouth(WOM) effect. Accordingly This study is significant in that it derived a measure to create small enterprises' performance centering on consumers and that it presented a cornerstone for the establishment of small enterprises at the government level.
