  • Characteristics of joint orientation, length, spacing and their distribution are very important factors for slope stability, Especially, the effect of joint spacing is an essential factor of slope stability. This study is to analyze the effect of joint spacing in cases of sliding and toppling, which is a typical failure mode. Joint spacing can divided into vertical spacing(spacing) and horizontal spacing(gap). And then, the spacing/length ratio of joint directly affect rock slope failure. When the ratio is below 0.05, the possibility of failure is rapidly increased. In case of toppling, the possibility of failure depends on the ratio of spacing to height of slope ratio slope. As the ratio decreases, the possibility of toppling failure increased. The critical ratio of spacing to height of slope is determined by the dip angle of the slope and the orientation of joint sets.

  • A new dual-slope ramp (DSR) reset waveform is proposed to improve the dark room contrast ratio in AC-PDPs. The proposed reset waveform has two different voltage slopes during a ramp-up period. The first voltage slope is lower than the conventional ramp voltage slope, causing a reduction in the background luminance, whereas the second voltage slope is higher than the conventional ramp voltage slope, causing an increase in the background luminance. Thus, a bias voltage is also applied during the second voltage-slope period to adjust the background luminance and address discharge characteristics. As a result, the proposed dual-slope reset waveform can lower the background luminance, thereby improving the high dark room contrast ratio of an AC-PDP without reducing the address voltage margin

  • The dynamic analyses of FM discriminators-Slope, Travis, Foster-Seely, and Ratio types-are presented by the method of Fourier Transform. The relationships between the distortion of the output waveform from the discriminator and its input FM wave and circuit constants are clearly shown in this study. According to the results, the Travis, Foster-Seely, and the ratio discriminators contain only odd harmonics, but the slope discriminator contains both even and odd harmonics. The permissible handwidth of travis discriminator for the 2% distortion is about twice those of Foster-Seely and ratio discriminatosr and sixteen times that of slope discriminator.

  • In this paper, the stability standards of slopes reclaimed by soils mixed with stone dust were proposed to manage the stone dust as recovery soils. First of all, the mixed ratio between stone dust and natural soil is classified into 5 groups, and a series of soil test was performed in each group. As the results of tests, the shear strength and the maximum dry unit weight were increased in decrease of the mixed ratio of stone dust. On the basis of the investigation to the safety factor standards of embankment slopes in and outside the country, a slope stability rank of slopes reclaimed by mixed soils were divided into 3 stages such as unstable stage, attention stage and stable stage. The slope angle, the slope height and the mixed ratio with stone dust were proposed by the result of stability analysis of slopes reclaimed by mixed soils. As the result of slope stability analysis, the slope angle of 1 : 1.8 at the reclaimed slope should be constructed in case of the slope height of 10 m. Also, the slope angle of 1 : 1.8 and the mixed ratio of stone dust less than 50% should be constructed in case of the slope height of 15 m. The analysis result of reclaimed slope constructed inside the quarry is similar to that of reclaimed slope constructed on the open ground in same conditions of the slope angle, the slope height and the mixed ratio with stone dust. The proposed stability standards of slopes reclaimed by soils mixed with stone dust can be used practically at the quarrying site.

  • This study describes the influence factors related to slope failure pattern and dimension in the southern Kyounggi area. Intrusive and metamorphic rocks are distributed in the study area. Geological condition, rainfall property and slope geometry are influence on slope failure characteristics in the study we& Geological factors related to slope failure are rock type, geological structure and weathering condition. Because of deep soil (RS-CW) depth of granite region, circular failure type is major failure pattern in granite region. Almost granite slopes with circular or surface failure pattern are failed during heavy rainfall season. But typical wedge failure type related to geological structure factor is a main failure pattern of metamorphic rock slope. Additionally failure dimension is influenced by geological factors and several factors, i.e. natural slope condition, failure type, rainfall intensity and etc. failure height/width ratio and thickness/length ratio of granite slope are 0.88 and 0.23. But the ratios of metamorphic rock slope are 1.36 and 0.19.

  • Failure of the cut slope is triggered by combination of internal and extemal failure factors. Internal failure factors are related to geological and geometrical conditions of slope itself, and natural and/or artificial loadings on slope can be the external failure factors. Influences of these failure factors show different intensity according to the ground condition and are controlled by behavior characters of the slope. In this study, the soil depth ratio(SR), block size ratio(BR) and rock strength are used as the criteria to divide ground condition based on behavior characteristics. Ground condition of the slope is divided into discontinuous jointed rock mass and continuos soil-like mass, highly fractured rock mass and massive rock mass by the criteria(SR and BR). The SFi-system is a rating system to determine the slope failure index(SFi) by analyzing internal and external factors based on classification of the ground condition. The results of the SFi-system application to the real cut slopes show close relationship between the SFi value and potential or dimension of the failure. Therefore, the SFi-system can be used as a useful tool to predict and analyze the characteristic of the slope failure.

  • We analyse the results of mass models derived from the HI rotation! curves of spiral galaxies and find that the slope of the luminous mass-circular velocity relation is close to 4. The luminous mass-circular velocity relation with a slope of about 4 can be explained by an anti-correlation between the mass surface density of luminous matter and the mass ratio of the dark and luminous components. We also argue that the conspiracy between luminous and dark matter exists in a local sense (producing a flat or smooth rotation curve) and in a global sense (affecting the mass ratio of the dark and luminous matter), maintaining the luminous mass-circular velocity relation with a slope of about 4. We therefore propose that the physical basis of the Tully-Fisher relation lies in the luminous mass-circular velocity relation. While the slope of the luminous mass-circular velocity relation is fairly well defined regardless of the dark matter contribution, the zero-point of the relation is still to be determined. The determination of the slope of the Tully-Fisher relation needs one more step: the mean trend of the luminosity-luminous mass relation determines the overall shape (slope) of the Tully-Fisher relation. The key parameter needed to determine the zero-point of the luminous mass-circular velocity relation and the slope of the Tully-Fisher relation obviously is the luminous mass-to-light ratio.

  • This paper presents the results of centrifuge model tests on the reinforced slope by pressure grouting. Tests were performed to investigate the reinforcing effect of grouting. In the tests, slopes of scale factor 1/10 were used changing the space and number of reinforcing bar. Test results are as tile follows; 1. The reinforcing effect increase rapidly with reinforcement area ratio at low value of reinforcement area ratio. 2. At high reinforcement area ratio the increase ratio of reinforcing effect decrease. 3. At same reinforcement area ratio, the reinforcing effect of double reinforcing bar was larger than the single reinforcing bar due to arching effect.

  • Failure occurred slope, due to typhoon 'Rusa' and 'Maemi' last two years, was studied to evaluate the slope failure characteristics. There're three types of the slope in this study, ie. soil slope, rock slope, mixed slope. Statistical analysis was used to estimate the relation between slope type and failure mode. Among the failure occurred slope, soil slope & mixed slope are dominant at the ratio of 33%, 44% respectively. We conclude that soil slope & mixed slope have more higher risk than rock slope during heavy rainfall.
