The tube outward local buckling of Concrete-Filled Steel Tube (CFST) beam under high compression stress is still considered a critical problem, especially for steel tubes with a slender section compared to semi-compact and compact sections. In this study, the flexural performance of stiffened slender cold-formed square tube beams filled with normal concrete was investigated. Fourteen (14) simply supported CFST specimens were tested under static bending loads, stiffened with different shapes and numbers of steel stiffeners that were provided at the inner sides of the tubes. Additional finite element (FE) CFST models were developed to further investigate the influence of using internal stiffeners with varied thickness. The results of tests and FE analyses indicated that the onset of local buckling, that occurs at the top half of the stiffened CFST beam's cross-section at mid-span was substantially restricted to a smaller region. Generally, it was also observed that, due to increased steel area provided by the stiffeners, the bending capacity, flexural stiffness and energy absorption index of the stiffened beams were significantly improved. The average bending capacity and the initial flexural stiffness of the stiffened specimens for the various shapes, single stiffener situations have increased of about 25% and 39%, respectively. These improvements went up to 45% and 60%, for the double stiffeners situations. Moreover, the bending capacity and the flexural stiffness values obtained from the experimental tests and FE analyses validated well with the values computed from equations of the existing standards.

The hysteretic behavior of diagonal reinforced coupling beams is excellent during earthquakes. However, construction of the diagonal reinforced coupling beams is difficult due to complex reinforcement details required by current code procedures (ACI 318-11). Due to the detail requirement, reinforcement congestion and interference among transverse reinforcement always occur during construction field. When the aspect ratio of the beam is large, the interference of reinforcement becomes more serious. The objective of this paper is to simplify the reinforcement details of slender coupling beams by reducing transverse reinforcement around the beam perimeter. For this purpose, high- performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites are used for making coupling beams. Experiments were conducted using three specimens having aspect ratio 3.5. Test results showed that HPFRCC coupling beams with half the transverse reinforcement required by ACI 318-11 provided identical seismic capacities to the corresponding coupling beams having requirement satisfying the requirement specified in ACI 318-11.

The use of fibers has been commonly considered in engineered cementitious composites, but their behavior with coarse aggregate in concrete has not been studied significantly, which is needed to meet structural performance objectives for design, such as ductility. This research analyzes the behavior of fiber-reinforced concrete with coarse aggregate with 0.62%, 1.23%, and 2% PVA (Polyvinyl-alcohol) content, varying the maximum aggregate size. Tensile (direct and indirect) and compressive concrete tests were performed. The PVA fiber addition in coarse aggregate concrete increased the ductility in compression, especially for the fiber with a larger aspect ratio, with a minor impact on strength. In addition, the tensile tests showed that the PVA fiber increased the tensile strength of concrete with coarse aggregate and, more significantly, improved the ductility. A selected mixture was used to build short and slender reinforced concrete beams to assess the behavior of structural members. PVA fiber addition in short beams changed the failure mode from shear to flexure, increasing the deflection capacity. On the other hand, the slender beam tests revealed negligible impact with the use of PVA.
In a companion paper, a rational mechanical model to predict the entire behavior of point-loaded RC slender beams (a/d > 2.5) without shear reinforcement was developed. This paper presents the test results of 9 slender shear beams and compares them with analytical results performed by the proposed model. They are grouped by two parameters, which are shear span ratio and concrete strength. Three kinds of concrete strength the 26.5, 39.2, and 58.8 MPa were included as a major experimental parameter together with different shear span ratios ranging from 3 to 6 depending on the test series. Tests were set up as a traditional 3 point bending test. Various measurements were taken to monitor abrupt shear failure. Test results were not only compared with analytical results from the proposed model, but also other formulas, to consider the various aspects of shear failure such as kinematical conditions or shear capacity. Finally, a review of the proposed model is presented with respect to the shear transfer mechanisms and the effect of test parameters. Results show that several assumptions and proposals adopted in the proposed model are rational and reasonable.
Shear failure in reinforced concrete (RC) structures is very hazardous. This failure is rarely predicted and may occur without any prior signs. Accurate shear strength prediction of the RC members is challenging, and traditional methods have difficulty solving it. This study develops a JAYA-GBRT model based on the JAYA algorithm and the gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT) to predict the shear strength of RC slender beams without stirrups. Firstly, 484 tests are carefully collected and divided into training and test sets. Then, the hyperparameters of the GBRT model are determined using the JAYA algorithm and 10-fold cross-validation. The performance of the JAYA-GBRT model is compared with five well-known empirical models. The comparative results show that the JAYA-GBRT model (R2 = 0.982, RMSE = 9.466 kN, MAE = 6.299 kN, µ = 1.018, and Cov = 0.116) outperforms the other models. Moreover, the predictions of the JAYA-GBRT model are globally and locally explained using the Shapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) method. The effective depth is determined as the most crucial parameter influencing the shear strength through the SHAP method. Finally, a Graphic User Interface (GUI) tool and a web application (WA) are developed to apply the JAYA-GBRT model for rapidly predicting the shear strength of RC slender beams without stirrups.
This paper presents and compares a one-dimensional (1D) bending theory for piezoelectric thin beam-type structures with resistive-inductive electrodes to ANSYS$^{(R)}$ three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) analysis. In particular, the lateral deflections and vibrations of slender piezoelectric beams are considered. The peculiarity of the piezoelectric beam model is the modeling of electrodes in such a manner that is does not fulfill the equipotential area condition. The case of ideal, perfectly conductive electrodes is a special case of our 1D model. Two-coupled partial differential equations are obtained for the lateral deflection and for the voltage distribution along the electrodes: the first one is an extended Bernoulli-Euler beam equation (second-order in time, forth order in space) and the second one the so-called Telegrapher's equation (second-order in time and space). Analytical results of our theory are validated by 3D electromechanically coupled FE simulations with ANSYS$^{(R)}$. A clamped-hinged beam is considered with various types of electrodes for the piezoelectric layers, which can be either resistive and/or inductive. A natural frequency analysis as well as quasi-static and dynamic simulations are performed. A good agreement between the extended beam theory and the FE results is found. Finally, the practical relevance of this type of electrodes is shown. It is found that the damping capability of properly tuned resistive or resistive-inductive electrodes exceeds the damping performance of beams, where the electrodes are simply linked to an optimized impedance.
The dynamic stiffness matrix is formulated for an axially loaded slender double-beam element in which both beams are homogeneous, prismatic and of the same length by directly solving the governing differential equations of motion of the double-beam element. The Bernoulli-Euler beam theory is used to define the dynamic behaviors of the beams and the effects of the mass of springs and axial force are taken into account in the formulation. The dynamic stiffness method is used for calculation of the exact natural frequencies and mode shapes of the double-beam systems. Numerical results are given for a particular example of axially loaded double-beam system under a variety of boundary conditions, and the exact numerical solutions are shown for the natural frequencies and normal mode shapes. The effects of the axial force and boundary conditions are extensively discussed.

The slender rectangular cantilever beam has vef interesting to study dynamic behaviors of the harmonic base excitation of a cantilever beam shows many nonlinear dynamics due to unstability , energy transfer and mode coupling. Nonlinear phenomenon shows superharmonic, subharmonic, super subharmonic and chaotic motions of the cantilever beam. Experimental observation and verification of these phenomenon carry much importance for the theoretical study as well as in it self. In the experimental cantilever beam, the chaotic motions of the beam appear as a pink noise signal in FFT analysis and as a torus structure in the oscilloscope analyzed to eventually give information of chaotic motions of the cantilever beam.
A mechanical model was developed to predict the behavior of point-loaded RC slender beams (a/d > 2.5) without stirrups. It is commonly accepted by most researchers that a diagonal tension crack plays a predominant role in the failure mode of these beams, but the failure mechanism of these members is still debatable. In this paper, it was assumed that diagonal tension failure was triggered by the concrete cover splitting due to the dowel action at the initial location of diagonal tension cracks, which propagate from flexural cracks. When concrete cover splitting occurred, the shape of a diagonal tension crack was simultaneously developed, which can be determined from the principal tensile stress trajectory. This fictitious crack rotates onto the crack tip with load increase. During the rotation, all forces acting on the crack (i.e, dowel force of longitudinal bars, vertical component of concrete tensile force, shear force by aggregate interlock, shear force in compression zone) were calculated by considering the kinematical conditions such as crack width or sliding. These forces except for the shear force in the compression zone were uncoupled with respect to crack width and sliding by the proposed constitutive relations for friction along the crack. Uncoupling the shear forces along the crack was aimed at distinguishing each force from the total shear force and clarifying the failure mechanism of RC slender beams without stirrups. In addition, a proposed method deriving the dowel force of longitudinal bars made it possible to predict the secondary shear failure. The proposed model can be used to predict not only the entire behavior of point-loaded RC slender shear beams, but also the ultimate shear strength. The experiments used to validate the proposed model are reported in a companion paper.
Reinforced concrete beams possess variable flexural and torsional stiffnesses due to formation of cracks in the tension area along the beam. In order to check the stability of the beam, it is thus more appropriate to divide the beam into a finite number of segments for which mean stiffnesses and also bending moments are calculated. The stability analysis is further simplified, by using these mean values for each segment. In this paper, an algorithm for calculating the critical lateral buckling slenderness ratio for a definite load level, in a reinforced concrete beam without lateral support at the flanges, is presented. By using this ratio, the lateral buckling safety level of a slender beam may be checked or estimated.
