In this study, the seismic performance of skewed highway bridges has been assessed by using fragility function methodology. Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) has been used to prepare complete information about the different damage states of a 30 degree skewed highway bridge. A three dimensional model of a skewed highway bridge is presented and incremental dynamic analysis has been applied. The details of the full nonlinear procedures have also been presented. Different spectral intensity measures are studied and the effects of the period on the fragility curves are shown in different figures. The efficiency, practicality and proficiency of these different spectral intensity measures are compared. A suite of 20 earthquake ground motions are considered for nonlinear time history analysis. It has been shown that, considering different intensity measures (IM) leads us to overestimate or low estimate the damage probability which has been discussed completely.

This paper presents a large signal analysis of ring-type oscillators with feed forward and negative skewed delay scheme. The analysis yields the frequency increase factor due to two schemes. The large signal analysis is needed, because small signal model is limited to the initial stage of oscillation[1]. For verification of the frequency increase factor, simulation were done under the same conditions for the two different types of ring oscillators, i.e., with and without feed forward and negative skewed delay scheme. Simulation results are in good agreement with predictions based on analysis.
The seismic vulnerability of skewed bridges had been observed in many past earthquakes. Researchers have found that the in-plane rotation of the girders was one of the main reasons for the vulnerability of these types of bridges. To date, not many experimental works have been done on this topic, especially those including pounding between adjacent structures. In this study, shake table tests were performed on a bridge-abutment system consisting of a straight, $30^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$ bridge with and without considering pounding. Skewed bridges with the same fundamental frequency and those having the same girder mass as the straight bridge were studied. Under the loadings considered, skewed bridges with the same frequency as the straight tend to have smaller responses than those with the same mass. The average maximum bending moment developed in the piers of the $30^{\circ}$ bridge with the same mass as that of the straight when pounding was not considered was 1.6 times larger than when the frequencies were the same. It was also found that the NZTA recommendations for the seat lengths of skewed bridges could severely underestimate the relative displacements of these types of bridges in the transverse direction, especially when pounding occurs. In the worst case, the average transverse displacement of the $45^{\circ}$ bridge was about 2.6 times the longitudinal displacement of the straight, which was greatly over the limit suggested by the NZTA of 1.25 times.

For Korean design provisions are not equipped for skewed steel box girder bridges, when American provisions are adopted, load distribution factors different from real behavior are determinated. Furthermore the possibility of over or under estimated bridge design involves. The aim of this study is to provide more rational load distribution factor formulas based on real behavior for shear at obtuse corner of skewed steel box girder bridges. In order to accomplish the aim finite element analysis for a variety of skewed steel box girder bridge structural models is carried out, and each parameters degree of influence on wheel load distribution factors of skewed steel box girder bridges are analyzed. Then multiple regression analysis is fulfilled in order to propose formulas for determinating shear force load distribution factor of skewed steel box girder bridges.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal joint positions which can minimize distresses of concrete pavement containing box culvert with horizontally skewed angles. METHODS : The concrete pavement containing the box culvert with different skewed angles and soil cover depths was modeled by 3 dimensional finite element method. The contact boundary condition was used between concrete and soil structures in addition to the nonlinear material property of soil in the finite element model. A dynamic analysis was performed by applying the self weight of pavement, negative temperature gradient of slab, and moving vehicle load simultaneously. RESULTS : In case of zero skewed angle ($0^{\circ}$), the maximum tensile stress of slab was the lowest when the joint was positioned directly over side of box culvert. In case there was a skewed angle, the maximum tensile stress of slab was the lowest when the joint passed the intersection between side of the box culvert and longitudinal centerline of slab. The magnitude of the maximum tensile stress converged to a constant value regardless the joint position from 3m of soil cover depth at all of the horizontally skewed angles. CONCLUSIONS : More reasonable and accurate design of the concrete pavement containing the box culvert can be possible based on the research results.

This study investigated the behavior of out-of-plane skewed moment connections that were designed as IMFs, as per the Korean standards. A total of 14 finite element models were constructed with the consideration of two types (single- and double-sided connections) and four levels of skew angle (0°, 10°, 20°, and 30°). The results indicated that the skewed connections considered in this study met the acceptance criteria for IMFs given by the codes. However, the load-carrying capacities of skewed connections were decreased as the skew angle increased. For the connection with a skew angle of 30°, the peak load was noted to be 13% less and the energy dissipation capacity could be 26% less than that of non-skewed connection. In addition, because of the skewed nature, the stress distribution in the skewed beam flange near the connection was asymmetric and the stresses were concentrated on the beam inner flange. Column twisting induced by the skewed configuration was very small and negligible in the beam and column combination considered in this study.

This paper proposes a novel skewed-type iron slot wedge that can improve both the cogging torque and the output power of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Generally the open slot structure is adopted in a PMSG due to its convenient winding work, but the high cogging torque is undesired. Firstly, an iron slot wedge was utilized to reduce the cogging torque of an open slot type PMSG. However, the output power of the machine decreased rapidly with this method. Thus, a proposed skewed type iron slot wedge is presented to improve the output power as well as the cogging torque as compared to the open slot type. Shape optimization of the skewed-type iron slot wedge is performed to simultaneously maximize the output power and reduce the cogging torque. The Kriging model based on the Halton sequence method and a genetic algorithm are used to optimize the design.
It is well known that the distributional properties of financial asset returns exhibit fatter-tails and skewer-mean than the assumption of normal distribution. The correct assumption of return distribution might improve the estimated performance of the Value-at-Risk(VaR) models in financial markets. In this paper, we estimate and compare the VaR performance using the RiskMetrics, GARCH and FIGARCH models based on the normal and skewed-Student-t distributions in two daily returns of the Korean Composite Stock Index(KOSPI) and Korean Won-US Dollar(KRW-USD) exchange rate. We also perform the expected shortfall to assess the size of expected loss in terms of the estimation of the empirical failure rate. From the results of empirical VaR analysis, it is found that the presence of long memory in the volatility of sample returns is not an important in estimating an accurate VaR performance. However, it is more important to consider a model with skewed-Student-t distribution innovation in determining better VaR. In short, the appropriate assumption of return distribution provides more accurate VaR models for the portfolio managers and investors.

A study on establishment of normal range of cardiothoracic ratio calculated from photofluorography film of chest by age and sex in a total of the 6,598 insureds was undertaken. The results were as follows: 1. In male group, the frequency distribution of cardiothoracic ratio was skewed weakly to the right in second decade, symmetrical in third and fourth decade, and was skewed weakly to the left in fifth and sixth decade; in female group, it was skewed weakly to the left in second, third and fourth decade, and was skewed weakly to the right in fifth and sixth decade. 2. On assumption that normal range of cardiothoracic ratio should comprise about 85% of all cardiothoracic ratios in each age group of both sexes, the sites of deviation from mean value of cardiothoracic ratio corresponding to maximum and minimum cardiothoracic ratio in the range of about 85% above mentioned were detected by statistical method on the frequency distribution of log tranformed cardiothoracic ratio, and $M{\pm}1.3$ sindicating normal range of cardiothoracic ratio was determined. In male group, normal range of cardiothoracic ratio determined by statistical method is 35-45%, 40-50%, 40-50%, 40-50% and 40-50% succesively in order from second to sixth decade; in female group, 40-50%, 40-50%, 40-50%, 45-55% and 45-55%.
