  • Consider about aggregate's price, coarse aggregates from 13 to 25mm were widely used in ready mixed concrete company. But if only use 13 to 25mm aggregates in the concrete, gap grading problem would be occurred. When recycled aggregates from 13 to 25mm was used, continuous grading would increase the durability and strength for the concrete, meanwhile the construction waste materials would also be reused. In this paper, 5-13mm recycled aggregates was utilized, to analyse the fundamental properties for concrete, strength has been tested to evaluate the quality and reusing effect of the recycled materials.

  • This study investigated particle expansion in basic oxygen furnace slag (BOF) and desulfurization slag (DSS) after heat curing by using the volume method. Concrete hydration was accelerated by heat curing. The compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and resistivity of the concrete were analyzed. Maximum expansion occurred in the BOF and DSS samples containing 0.30-0.60 mm and 0.60-1.18 mm particles, respectively. Deterioration was more severe in the BOF samples. In the slag aggregates for the complete replacement of fine aggregate, severe fractures occurred in both the BOF and DSS samples. Scanning electron microscopy revealed excess CH after curing, which caused peripheral hydration products to become extruded, resulting in fracture.

  • Concrete recycling is becoming mandatory rather selective due to depletion of constructional materials and increase of concrete waste. Studies on recycling concrete are conducted in various point of view for long time. However, standard or guideline of many countries for the application of recycled aggregate concrete(RAC) has restrictions such as low replacement rate of coarse aggregate and no fine aggregate allowed due to inferior material properties of recycled aggregate. This study intends to figure out the feasibility of casting natural aggregate concrete(NAC) and RAC separately in a structural member. In making RAC, replacement rate of coarse aggregate was 50, 100% in RAC and treatment of interface of two concretes is introduced. RAC treatment of recycled aggregate or inclusion of additives was not done as it can increase embodied energy of concrete work. Double-shear test with uniformly distributed loading was adopted to evaluate shear strength at the interface of two concretes. After curing it was hard to distinguish interface of two concretes. Experimental result revealed that specimen with higher replacement rate showed higher shear-to-compressive strength ratio, which is possibly attributed to coarse aggregate size and roughness of sheared section. Further study on the effect of various parameters is required and subsequent research activity is on-going.

  • The demand for porous asphalt mixtures is increasing because it has a range of functions, such as reducing traffic accidents and traffic noise. On the other hand, its application is delayed due to concerns about durability. This study examined the effects of the maximum aggregate size, temperature, and porosity of an asphalt mixture on the durability. To this end, the durability measure was set to the Cantabro loss rate. Mixtures having the same porosity of 20% and the maximum aggregate diameters of 13 mm, 10 mm, and 8 mm were tested at 20℃ and -20℃. Mixtures containing 20% and 22% voids with the same material having the same diameter were tested. With 20% porosity, there was no significant difference in durability when there was a change in the maximum aggregate size. There was a significant difference between 20℃ and -20℃, but no significant difference in durability when there was a 2% difference between 20% and 22%. The significance of this study is that the durability was presented quantitatively by tests and statistical analysis. This research will help improve the durability of porous asphalt mixtures by evaluating the factors affecting the durability quantitatively.

  • In 2019, at 147 local governments, a total of 872 operations produced aggregates with 414 operations by permission, 458 operations by declaration except the marine operations. The leading aggregate sources were, in descending order of the number of operations, crushed, forest, land, washing, river aggregate. By aggregate type, gravel-only operations were slightly more than sand-only ones. By province, Gyeongsangbuk-do had 149 operations, followed by Gyeonggi-do with 135, Gangwon-do with 113, and Gyeongsangnam-do with 92, Chungcheongbuk-do with 81, and Jeollabuk-do with 70. A review of production by size of operation indicated that about 23,100 thousand m3 (17.6% of the total aggregate) was produced by 17 operations reporting production of more than 1 million m3, about 29,900 thousand m3 was produced by 44 operations reporting production between 500 and <1,000 thousand m3, about 60,000 thousand m3 was produced by 273 operations reporting production between 100 and <200 thousand m3, about 17,000 thousand m3 was produced by 409 operations reporting production between 10 and <100 thousand m3. 129 operations that producted less than 10 thousand m3 accounted for 0.4% of total aggregate produced in Korea in 2019. Operations that produce more than 1 million m3 of aggregate was only from forest and crushed aggregate. The period of permission for aggregate producing based on permission is mostly less than 10 years, and in particular, for river and land aggregates, the permission period is very short, less than 2 years.

  • Surface of fine-size exposed aggregate portland cement concrete pavements(FS-EAPCC) is consist by exposed coarse aggregate to remove upper 2~3mm mortar of concrete slabs. Advantages of FS-EAPCC are maintaining low-noise and adequate skid-resistance level during the performance period. However, FS-EAPCC is required rational management criteria for field application, since it is early stage for application. Design construction and quality control criteria of FS-EAPCC was temporary laboratory tests which including optimum mix and exposing method, selection of adequate aggregate, resistance against, environmental loading and etc. However, these criteria need to be validated base on field application. In this study, experimental constructions were performed and construction procedure and quality control criteria were suggested based on the performance of the FS-EAPCC.

  • This is an experimental study on the structural characteristics of reinforced concrete beams using of the oyster shells as a substitute fine aggregate of concrete. In this study, the main factors consist of the grain sizes and the percentage of substitution of oyster shells to fine aggregate in the equal water cement ratio. The results of the study showed as followed. The initial load value of them represented similar constant within 10% of the maximum load value in each test beam. But the maximum load value and the ultimate load value decreased with increased grain size and the rate of substitution. As the grain size of oyster shells became smaller, the load values of them were somewhat higher. The deflection among deformation properties of reinforced concrete beams with oyster shells represented typical curves like that of normal reinforced concrete. In the deformation of steel and concrete, the deformation was proportionated to the load till yield point and from yield point until approaching the ultimate load point. One type was typical curve of the load and the deformation and the other type irregularly was changed to very small deformation for the load increase centering around load axis. After the analyzing structural behaviors and the properties of reinforced concrete test beams with oyster shells, the most excellent grain size of oyster shells represented 1.0mm and less or 5.0mm and less with taking uniformly, and the percentage of practicable substitution of them to fine aggregate was about 30%.

  • This research deals with the prediction of compressive strength of normal and high strength concrete using neural networks. The compressive strength was modeled as a function of eight variables: quantities of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, micro-silica, water and super-plasticizer, maximum size of coarse aggregate, fineness modulus of fine aggregate. Two networks, one using raw variables and another using grouped dimensionless variables were constructed, trained and tested using available experimental data, covering a large range of concrete compressive strengths. The neural network models were compared with regression models. The neural networks based model gave high prediction accuracy and the results demonstrated that the use of neural networks in assessing compressive strength of concrete is both practical and beneficial. The performance of model using the grouped dimensionless variables is better than the prediction using raw variables.
