This paper describes an automated system for analyzing the stress intensity factors(SIFs) of three-dimensional (3D) cracks. A geometry model, i.e.a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy knowledge processing. Nodes are generated by the bucketing method, and ten-noded quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delauuay triangulation techniques. The singular elements such that the mid-point nodes near crack fornt are shifted at the quarter-points are automatically placed along the 3D crack front. THe complete finite element (FE) model generated, i.e the mesh with material properties and boundary conditions is given to one of the commercial FE codes, and a stress analysis is performed. The SIFs are calculated using the displacement extrapolation method. To demonstrate practical performance of the present system, a semi- elliptical surface crack in a plate subjected to tension is solved.

This paper describes a fuzzy-based system for analyzing the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of three-dimensional (3D) cracks. 3D finite element method(FEM) was used to obtain the SIF for subsurface cracks and surface cracks existing in inhomogeneous materials. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy theory. Nodes are generated by the bucketing method, and ten-noded quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. The singular elements such that the mid-point nodes near crack front are shifted at the quarter-points, and these are automatically placed along the 3D crack front. The complete FE model is generated, and a stress analysis is performed. The SIFs are calculated using the displacement extrapolation method. The results were compared with those surface cracks in homogeneous materials. Also, this system is applied to analyze cladding effect of surface cracks in inhomogeneous materials.
A two-step approach has been used to obtain a new criterion for the onset of slug formation : (1) In the first step, a more general expression than the existing models for the onset of slug flow criterion has been derived from the analysis of singular points and neutral stability conditions of the transient one-dimensional two-phase flow equations of two-fluid model. (2) In the second step, introducing simplifications and incorporating a parameter into the general expression obtained in the first step to satisfy a number of physical conditions a priori specified, a new simple criterion for the onset of slug flow has been derived. Comparisons of the present model with existing models and experimental data show that the present model agrees very closely with Taitel & Dukler's model and experimental data in horizontal pipes. In an inclined pipe ($\theta$ =50$^{\circ}$), however, the difference between the predictions of the present model and those of existing models is appreciably large and the present model gives the best agreement with Ohnuki et al.'s data.

The sensitivity of interior noise that the passengers perceive is comparatively high in the train, and structure-borne and air-borne types of noises come into the train. In this paper, to analyze contributions of these noise sources operational transfer path analysis(OTPA) is used. OTPA has some advantages of executing the contribution rates of several sources simultaneously, and in this work, 29 points are measured while running. Transfer functions between reference measurement points and response measurement points are calculated by the singular value decomposition(SVD) and Principal component analysis(PCA) method, and the frequency characteristics of the noise source are successfully derived. Also the interior noise is predicted and compared with measurement data to show the reliability.

Depth recovery in robot vision is an essential problem to infer the three dimensional geometry of scenes from a sequence of the two dimensional images. In the past, many studies have been proposed for the depth estimation such as stereopsis, motion parallax and blurring phenomena. Among cues for depth estimation, depth from lens translation is based on shape from motion by using feature points. This approach is derived from the correspondence of feature points detected in images and performs the depth estimation that uses information on the motion of feature points. The approaches using motion vectors suffer from the occlusion or missing part problem, and the image blur is ignored in the feature point detection. This paper presents a novel approach to the defocus technique based depth from lens translation using sequential SVD factorization. Solving such the problems requires modeling of mutual relationship between the light and optics until reaching the image plane. For this mutuality, we first discuss the optical properties of a camera system, because the image blur varies according to camera parameter settings. The camera system accounts for the camera model integrating a thin lens based camera model to explain the light and optical properties and a perspective projection camera model to explain the depth from lens translation. Then, depth from lens translation is proposed to use the feature points detected in edges of the image blur. The feature points contain the depth information derived from an amount of blur of width. The shape and motion can be estimated from the motion of feature points. This method uses the sequential SVD factorization to represent the orthogonal matrices that are singular value decomposition. Some experiments have been performed with a sequence of real and synthetic images comparing the presented method with the depth from lens translation. Experimental results have demonstrated the validity and shown the applicability of the proposed method to the depth estimation.

The Fourier series uses a vibrating wave that possesses an amplitude that is like the one of the sine curve. Therefore, the functions used in the Fourier series do not change due to the value of the frequency and that set a limit to express irregular signals with rapid oscillations or with discontinuities in localized regions. However, the wavelet series analysis(WSA) method supplements these limits of the Fourier series by a linear combination of a suitable number of wavelets. By using the wavelet that is focused on time, it is able to give changes to the range in the cycle. Also, this enables to express a signal more efficiently that has singular configuration and that is flowing. The main objective of this study is to propose a scheme called wavelet series analysis for the application of wavelet theory to one-dimensional problems represented by the second-order elliptic equation and to evaluate theperformance of proposed scheme comparing with the finite element analysis. After a through evaluation of different types of wavelets, the HAT wavelet system is chosen as a wavelet function as well as a scaling function. It can be stated that the WSA method is as efficient as the FEA method in the case of axial bars with distributed loads, but the WSA method is more accurate than the FEA method at the singular points and its computation time is less.

A method, which uses analytical or numerical modal analysis results, e.g. from finite element analysis, to select desirable response measurement and excitation points for an efficient modal testing is introduced. First, points of master degree of freedom(DOP) are determined so as to statistically minimize errors between responses of a full order model and those estimated from the reduced order model. Such master DOF's are selected as the response measurement points. Then a criterion named 'driving point model constant(DPMC)' related to the magnitudes of resonance peaks of the driving point freqency response functions used to select the point of excitation out of the master DOF's. In this work, the method is demonstrated through applications to modal testing on a one dimensional cantilever beam and an aluminum plate and the results are compared with those by another technique. also, the method is applied to a two dimensional structural component of a passenger car.

In this research, a study on stress shape functions was conducted to analyze the contact stress problem by using a hybrid photoelasticity. Because the contact stress problem is generally solved as a half-plane problem, the relationship between two analytical stress functions, which are compositions of the Airy stress function, was similar to one of the crack problem. However, this relationship in itself could not be used to solve the contact stress problem (especially one with singular points). Therefore, to analyze the contact stress problem more correctly, stress shape functions based on the condition of two contact end points had to be considered in the form of these two analytical stress functions. The four types of stress shape functions were related to the stress singularities at the two contact end points. Among them, the primary two types used for the analysis of an O-ring were selected, and their validities were verified in this work.

This paper explores the use of BEM based NAH to reconstruct the surface vibration of a plate in a rectangular finite cavity, in which the distances between sensors and the nearest points on the source surface are not equal. In such circumstances, different degree of information on propagating and non-propagating wave components will be detected by sensors at different positions, as well as the influence of measurement noise will vary significantly from the nearest points of measurement to the farthest ones. On the other hand, the condition number of the vibro-acoustic transfer function matrix relating normal surface velocities and field pressures will becomes high, numerically indicating an increase of linear dependency between rows of transfer function matrix. The combination of poor measurement and high condition number will result inaccurate reconstruction. Therefore, one approach to be investigated in this work is to select the measurement positions in such ways that reduce measurement redundancy, as it indicated by the condition number. The improvement is found to be significant in the numerical simulations utilizing two different criterions, spanning from over-determined to under-determined cases, and in the validation experiment.

The stress distribution around micro holes and the behavior of stress interaction between micro holes are considerd in the study. Several conclusions are extracted as follows : (1) The stress interaction varies with the distance e between micro holes. When the two micro holes are spaced in such a manner that theri two closest points are separated by a distance of micro hole radius (e=1), stress distribution is affected by a opposite micro hole in all the closest region. In addition, if two closest points are seperated by twice the distance of a micro hole radius (e=2), stress distribution is affected by a opposite micro hole in the region of -0.8.leq.x/r.leq.0.8 and the interaction effect can be neglected for e=4. (2)If the depth becomes larger than the radius, or the radius varies, the shape and magnitude of stress distribution around micro holes varies. (3) Hoop stress around a micro hole for the two dimensional configuration is larger than that of the three dimensional micro hole located on the surface of material for .theta. < 60.deg., but it is reversed for .theta > 60.deg.
