Study on multi-unit level 3 PSA to understand a characteristics of risk in a multi-unit context

  • Since the Fukushima Daiichi accident in 2011, concerns for the safety of multi-unit Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) sites have risen. This is because more than 70% of NPP sites are multi-unit sites that have two or more NPP units and a multi-unit accident occurred for the first time. After this accident, Probability Safety Assessment (PSA) has been considered in many countries as one of the tools to quantitatively assess the safety for multi-unit NPP sites. One of the biggest concerns for a multi-unit accident such as Fukushima is that the consequences (health and economic) will be significantly higher than in the case of a single-unit accident. However, many studies on multi-unit PSA have focused on Level 1 & 2 PSA, and there are many challenges in terms of public acceptance due to various speculations without an engineering background. In this study, two kinds of multi-unit Level 3 PSA for multi-unit site have been carried out. The first case was the estimation of multi-unit risk with conservative assumptions to investigate the margin between multi-unit risk and QHO, and the other was to identify the effect of time delays in releases between NPP units on the same site. Through these two kinds of assessments, we aimed at investigating the level of multi-unit risk and understanding the characteristics of risk in a multiunit context.

  • In general, Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems (AS/RS ) have racks of equal sized cells to utilize the concept of unit-load. Most of the techniques for the performance estimation of a unit-load AS/RS are a static model or computer simulation. Especially, their models were developed under assumption that the Storage/Retrieval (S/R) machine performs only single command (SC) or dual command (DC). In reality, defending on the operating policy and the status of the system at a particular time, the S/B machine performs a SC or a DC, or becomes .: idle. In order to resolve these weak points, we propose a stochastic model for the performance estimation of unit-load AS/RS by using a single-server queueing model.   • Purpose: Now a day, Most of the residential house in Korea consists of apartment buildings. However, in the case of old apartment buildings, dwelling environment condition depends on management effort by residents. But we can't rebuild or restructure only old single dwelling unit in apartment buildings. And we can't move every single dwelling unit in the apartment building. Therefore, this study suggests a prototype of combinable container dwelling module apartment. Method: The method of research is exploring the case of previously constructed containers. Based on the case, This study suggests prototypes to create a variable apartment design with dwelling container units. Based on the prototype, various combinations are proposed to produce various types of dwelling space. Finally, this study makes an example plan for the apartment by using the container unit modules. Results: This study suggests combinable container apartment building prototypes. And it may be a fundamental study of changing the apartment building concept.

A design of a floating point unit with 3 stages for a 3D graphics shader engine

  • This paper presents a floating point unit(FPU) with 3 stages for a 3D graphics shader engine. It targeted to accelerate 3D graphics in portable device environments. In order to design a balanced architecture for a shader engine, we analyzed shader assembly instructions and estimated the performance of FPU with the method we propose. The proposed unit handles 4-dimensional data through separated two paths that are lead to general operation module and special function module. The proposed FPU is compiled as a form of the cascade FPU with 3 stages to efficiently handle a matrix operation with relatively low hardware overhead. Except some complex instructions that are executed using macro instructions, all instructions complete an operation in a single instruction cycle at 100MHz frequency. A special function module performs all operations in a single clock cycle using the Newton Raphson method with the look-up table.

Unit Cell FEM Analysis Using I-Fiber Single Stitch with Different Thickness

  • This paper present a three-dimensional unit cell finite element analysis to predict the pull-out behavior of a single stitch in a composite laminate. The stitching process used for this study correspond to the I-fiber stitching method that has been studied by the Composite Structures Lab (CSL) as a new through-thickness reinforced method. A total of six cases were analyzed, which were divided in two groups by the stitching yarn used, 6k and 12k. Each group of cases have three different thickness according to the amount of plies; 16 plies, 32 plies and 64 plies. The finite element analysis used the cohesive zone method to characterize the single stitch reinforcement in the interface. Due to the complexity of the load vs displacement curves taken from the experimental results, a bilinear and trilinear bridging laws were implemented in the models. The cohesive parameters used for each case showed a good agreement with the experimental data and can be used for future studies.

GPU-Accelerated Single Image Depth Estimation with Color-Filtered Aperture

  • There are two major ways to implement depth estimation, multiple image depth estimation and single image depth estimation, respectively. The former has a high hardware cost because it uses multiple cameras but it has a simple software algorithm. Conversely, the latter has a low hardware cost but the software algorithm is complex. One of the recent trends in this field is to make a system compact, or even portable, and to simplify the optical elements to be attached to the conventional camera. In this paper, we present an implementation of depth estimation with a single image using a graphics processing unit (GPU) in a desktop PC, and achieve real-time application via our evolutional algorithm and parallel processing technique, employing a compute shader. The methods greatly accelerate the compute-intensive implementation of depth estimation with a single view image from 0.003 frames per second (fps) (implemented in MATLAB) to 53 fps, which is almost twice the real-time standard of 30 fps. In the previous literature, to the best of our knowledge, no paper discusses the optimization of depth estimation using a single image, and the frame rate of our final result is better than that of previous studies using multiple images, whose frame rate is about 20fps.

  • At present, various methods are available to analyze storm runoff data. Among these, application of Z-transform is comparatively simple and new, and the technique can be used to identify rainfall and unit hydrograph from analysis of a single storm runoff. The technique has been developed under the premise that the rainfall-runoff process behaves as a linear system for which the Z-transform of the direct runoff equals the product of the Z-transforms of the transfer function and the rainfall. In the hydrologic literatures, application aspects of this method to the rainfall-runoff process are lacking and some of the results are questionable. Thus, the present study provides the estimation of Z-transform technique by analyzing the application process and the results using hourly runoff data observed at the research basin of International Hydrological Program (IHP), the Pyeongchanggang River basin. This study also provides the backgrounds for the problems that can be included in the application processes of the Z-transform technique.

  • Arithmetic unit speed depends strongly on the algorithms employed to realize the basic arithmetic operations.(add, subtract multiply, and divide) and on the logic design. Recent advances in VLSI have increased the feasibility of hardware implementation of floating point arithmetic units and microprocessors require a powerful floating-point processing unit as a standard option. This paper describes the design of floating-point multiplier for IEEE 754-1985 Single-Precision operation. Booth encoding algorithm method to reduce partial products and a Wallace tree of 4-2 CSA is adopted in fraction multiplication part to generate the $32{\times}32$ single-precision product. New scheme of rounding and sticky-bit generation is adopted to reduce area and timing. Also there is a true sign generator in this design. This multiplier have been implemented in a ALTERA FLEX EPF10K70RC240-4.

회분식 반응기에서 조류 Spirulina 균체내 중금속 흡착 특성 (Biosorption Characteristics of Heavy Metal by Algae, Spirulina in the Batch Reactor)

  • In recent years the accumulation of heavy metals in microorganisms, the biosorption has received much attention because of various environmental application. We have been to research the biosorption characteristics using algae, Spirulina, for the removal of heavy metal ions in industrial and polluted waters. In the adsorption of single heavy metal ions, the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 10min., and optimum pH and reaction temperature were 4.5-5 and 30-35$\circ $C, respectively. Under the above conditions, the maximum amounts of Pb, Cu, and Cd adsorbed to the unit weight of Spirulina were 107.6mg/g, 78.0mg/g, and 65.6mg/g, and three values were 1.45, 1.56, and 1.26 times higher than those adsorbed to the unit weight of activated carbon under same conditions. The adsorption kinetics of Pb, Cu, and Cd were fitted very well to the Freundlich isotherm and BET isotherm. Biosorption experiments in single ion solutions and binary ions solutions showed higher removal efficiency in the single ion solutions than in binary ions solutions.
