Affine transformation was used to analyze the bending, buckling and vibration behaviors of a thick antisymmetric angle-ply rectangular simply supported laminate. Introducing the generalized parameters, the comprehensive solutions are found. The generalized parameters are a generalized rigidity ratio ( $D^*1), a generalized Poisson's ratio (.epsilon.) and a principal rigidity ratio (.alpha.). Hence, the transverse deflection decreases, the uniaxial buckling load and the fundamental frequency increase with increasing $D^*1 and decreasing .alpha., but the effect of .epsilon. is negligible. With decreasing the thickness ratio, the results by the classical plate theory are more erroneous. The transverse deflection is minimum, the uniaxial buckling load and the fundamental frequency are maximum if the fiber angle is 45.deg., and number of plies is more than 4. The time and efforts can be saved to understand the behaviors of composite laminates because these results can be applied to another composite material easily.sily.

The effect of an elastic intermediate support on the vibration characteristics of a fluid conveying pipe system modeled as simply-simply supported and fixed-fixed supported pipes has been investigated. The approach is based on solving the closed form equation of the 4th order polynomials. The change of natural frequency and critical velocity are also investigated with the fluid density, the fluid velocity, the position and stiffness of the elastic intermediate support varied. The results show that the vibration characteristics of pipe system could be controled by changing the position and/or stiffness of the elastic intermediate support.

In this paper, radiation efficiency of the plate surround by an infinite rigid baffle is studied. The plate is simply supported and one side is in contact with air, while other side with water. The pressure and normal velocity over the plate surface are assumed as modal summations, from which a set of linear equations is obtained for fluid-structure coupled problem. It is shown that neglect of the cross modes results in overestimation of the radiation efficiency specifically for mid-frequency ranges. Based on the fact that the responses are mainly determined from the first few cross modes in addition to the diagonal terms, a new algorithm is proposed, where banded matrix is iteratively solved in computing radiation efficiency. In numerical examples, it is found that radiation efficiency obtained from banded matrix is in excellent agreement with the one from the full matrix, while computing time is significantly reduced. It is also found that as frequency grows larger, radiation efficiency considering only diagonal terms is a good approximation.
Effects of the rotary inertia of concentrated masses on the natural vibrations of fluid conveying pipes have been studied by theoretical modeling and computer simulation. For analysis, two boundary conditions for pipe ends, simply supported and clamped-clamped, are assumed and Galerkin's method is used for transformation of the governing equation to the eigenvalues problem and the natural frequencies and mode shapes for the system have been calculated by using the newly developed computer code. Moreover, the critical velocities related to a system instability have been investigated. The main conclusions for the present study are (1) Rotary inertia gives much change on the higher natural frequencies and mode shapes and its effect is visible when it has small value, (2) The number and location of nodes can be changed by rotary inertia, (3) By introducing rotary inertia, the second natural frequency approaches to the first as the location of the concentrated mass approaches to the midspan of the pipe, and (4) The critical fluid velocities to initiate the system unstable are unchanged by introduction of rotary inertia and the first three velocities are $\pi$, 2$\pi$, and 3$\pi$ for the simply supported pipe and 2$\pi$, 8.99, and 12.57 for the clamped-clamped pipe.

In recent years, conskderable interest has developed in the fatigue strength of reinforced concrete members subjected to cyclic loading for the wide-spread adoption of ultimate strength design poecedures, the higher strength materials and the new recognition of the effect of repeated loading on structures such as bridges, concrete pavementes and offshore structures. In this study, a series of experiments is carried out to investigate the fatigue characteristics of deformed bars and underreinforced simply supported beams. The 69 reinforcing bar specimens with grade SD30 and designation of D16, D22, D25, and 24 beam specimens with D16 bars are prepared for this study. From these series of tests, it is found that I) a decrease of the bar deameter result in increased fatigue life, ii) the fatigue life of the bars embedded as main reinforcement within a concrete is more than that of bars in the air. iii) the fatigue strength at 2$\times$106 cycles of beams with steel ratio of 0.61% and 1.22% is 64.5% and 63.2% of the yielding strength, restectively. It is concluded that the low steel ratio has no significant effect on fatigue strength of underreinforced beams and the fatigue life of underreinforced concrete beams can be predicted conservatively by the fatigue life lf reinforcing bar.
A numerical method is presented for an out-of-plane structural intensity analysis of rectangular thick plates with arbitrary elastic edge constraints. The method adapts an assumed mode method based on Timoshenko beam functions to obtain the velocities and internal forces needed for a structural intensity analysis. To verify the presented method, the structural intensity of a square thick plate under harmonic force excitation, for which four edges are simply supported, is analyzed, and the result is compared with existing solutions using the assumed mode method based on trigonometric functions. In addition, numerical analyses are carried out for a rectangular-shaped thick plate under harmonic force excitations, of which three edges are simply supported and one edge utilizes an arbitrary elastic edge constraint. These numerical examples show the good accuracy and applicability of the presented method for rectangular thick plates with arbitrary edge constraints.
This paper presents the influence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) waviness and aspect ratio on the vibrational behavior of functionally graded nanocomposite sandwich annular sector plates resting on two-parameter elastic foundations. The carbon nanotube-reinforced (CNTR) sandwich plate has smooth variation of CNT fraction along the thickness direction. The distributions of CNTs are considered functionally graded (FG) or uniform along the thickness and their mechanical properties are estimated by an extended rule of mixture. In this study, the classical theory concerning the mechanical efficiency of a matrix embedding finite length fibers has been modified by introducing the tube-to-tube random contact, which explicitly accounts for the progressive reduction of the tubes' effective aspect ratio as the filler content increases. Effects of CNT distribution, volume fraction, aspect ratio and waviness, and also effects of Pasternak's elastic foundation coefficients, sandwich plate thickness, face sheets thickness and plate aspect ratio are investigated on the free vibration of the sandwich plates with wavy CNT-reinforced face sheets. The study is carried out based on three-dimensional theory of elasticity and in contrary to two-dimensional theories, such as classical, the first- and the higher-order shear deformation plate theories, this approach does not neglect transverse normal deformations. The sandwich annular sector plate is assumed to be simply supported in the radial edges while any arbitrary boundary conditions are applied to the other two circular edges including simply supported, clamped and free.

In this paper, the bending behavior of single-walled carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (CNTRC) laminated plates is studied using various shear deformation plate theories. Several types of reinforcement material distributions, a uniform distribution (UD) and three functionally graded distributions (FG), are inspected. A generalized higher-order deformation plate theory is utilized to derive the field equations of the CNTRC laminated plates where an analytical technique based on Navier's series is utilized to solve the static problem for simply-supported boundary conditions. A detailed numerical analysis is carried out to examine the influence of carbon nanotube volume fraction, laminated composite structure, side-to-thickness, and aspect ratios on stresses and deflection of the CNTRC laminated plates.
In this study, a wavelet packet based method is proposed for identifying damage occurrence and damage location for beam-like structures. This method assumes that the displacement or the acceleration response time histories at various locations along a beam-like structure both before and after damage are available for damage assessment. These responses are processed through a proper level of wavelet packet decomposition. The wavelet packet signature (WPS) that consists of wavelet packet component signal energies is calculated. The change of the WPS curvature between the baseline state and the current state is then used to identify the locations of possible damage in the structure. Two numerical studies, one on a 15-storey shear-beam building frame and another on a simply-supported steel beam, and an experimental study on a simply-supported reinforced concrete beam are performed to validate the proposed method. Results show the WPS curvature change can be used to locate both single and sparsely-distributed multiple damages that exist in the structure. Also the accuracy of assessment does not seem to be affected by the presence of 20-15dB measurement noise. One advantage of the proposed method is that it does not require any mathematical model for the structure being monitored and hence can potentially be used for practical application.
With the advantages of large span, light deadweight and convenient construction, the steel-concrete composite beam (SCCB) has been rapidly developed as a medium span bridge. Compared with common beams, the global stiffness of SCCB is discontinuous and in a staged distribution. In this paper, the analysis model for the simply-supported SCCB is established and the vibration equations are derived. The natural vibration characteristics of a simply-supported SCCB are analyzed, and are compared with the theoretical and experimental results. A curvature mode measurement method is proposed to identify the shear connector damage of SCCB, with the stiffness reduction factor to describe the variation of shear connection stiffness. By analysis on the $1^{st}$ to $3^{rd}$ vertical modes, the distribution of shear connectors between the steel girder and the concrete slab are well identified, and the damage locations and failure degrees are detected. The results show that the curvature modes can be used for identification of the damage location.
