The present work proposes a solution to the static Boltzmann transport equation approximated by the simplified P3 (SP3) on angular, and the analytic coarse mesh finite difference (ACMFD) for spatial variables. Multi-group SP3-ACMFD equations in 3D rectangular geometry are solved using the GMRES solution technique. As the core time dependent analysis necessitates the solution of an eigenvalue problem for an initial condition, this work is hence devoted to development and verification of the proposed static SP3-ACMFD solver. A 3D multi-group static diffusion solver is also developed as a byproduct of this work to assess the improvement achieved using the SP3 technique. Static results are then compared against transport benchmarks to assess the proximity of SP3-ACMFD solutions to their full transport peers. Results prove that the approach can be considered as an acceptable interim approximation with outputs superior to the diffusion method, close to the transport results, and with the computational costs less than the full transport approach. The work would be further generalized to time dependent solutions in Part II.
The seismic vulnerability analysis of multi-span bridges can be based on the response of the piers, provided that deck, bearings and foundations remain elastic. The lateral response of an RC bridge pier can be affected by different mechanisms (i.e., flexure, shear, lap-splice or buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement bars, second order effects). In the literature, simplified formulations are available for mechanisms different from the flexure. On the other hand, the flexural response is usually calculated with a numerically-based Moment-Curvature diagram of the base section and equivalent plastic hinge length. The goal of this paper is to propose a simplified analytical solution to obtain the Moment-Curvature relationship for hollow circular RC sections. This based on calibrated polynomials, fitted against a database comprising 720 numerical Moment-Curvature analyses. The section capacity curve is defined through the position of 6 characteristic points and they are based on four input parameters: void ratio of the hollow section, axial force ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, transversal reinforcement ratio. A case study RC bridge pier is assessed with the proposed solution and the results are compared to a refined numerical FEM analysis, showing good match.

Vibration analysis of a thin-walled structure can be performed with a consistent mass matrix determined by the shape functions of all degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) used for construction of conventional stiffness matrix, or with a lumped mass matrix. In similar way stability of a structure can be analysed with consistent geometric stiffness matrix or geometric stiffness matrix with lumped buckling load, related only to the rotational d.o.f. Recently, the simplified mass matrix is constructed employing shape functions of in-plane displacements for plate deflection. In this paper the same approach is used for construction of simplified geometric stiffness matrix. Beam element, and triangular and rectangular plate element are considered. Application of the new geometric stiffness is illustrated in the case of simply supported beam and square plate. The same problems are solved with consistent and lumped geometric stiffness matrix, and the obtained results are compared with the analytical solution. Also, a combination of simplified and lumped geometric stiffness matrix is analysed in order to increase accuracy of stability analysis.
Aircraft conceptual design usually uses low to medium fidelity analysis to determine the basic configuration of an aircraft. Optimum solution is bounded by at least one of the constraints in most cases. This solution has risk to fail at later stage when analyzed with more sophisticated analysis tools. This research uses pre-constructed database to estimate the analysis prediction errors associated with simplified analysis methods. A possibility based design optimization framework is developed to utilize the newly proposed piecewise-linear fuzzy membership functions that compensate the discrepancies caused by simplified analysis. The proposed approach for aircraft design produces the optimum aircraft configurations that are less likely to fall into infeasible region when analyzed using higher fidelity analysis at later design stages.
Transmission line impedance calculation has been tried for obtaining exact value. The method proposed by Carson contains indefinite complex integral. Although the Carson solution is proposed with power series, the solution is limited and valid at special range of frequency. In this paper, we proposed a simplified Carson solution by analytical method using ground transmission line return current. This method calculate the transmission line impedance easily.
The method proposed by Carson contains indefinite complex integral which simulates earth return current. Although the Carson solution is proposed with power series, the solution is limited and valid at special range of frequency. We proposed a simplified Carson solution by modelling earth current path analytical method using ground transmission line return current. In this paper, we studied on trying to find the equivalent distance for earth current return path.
$\epsilon$-sensitivity analysis is a kind of methods for performing sensitivity analysis for linear programming. Its main advantage is that it can be directly applied for interior-point methods with a little computation. Although $\epsilon$-sensitivity analysis was proposed several years ago, there have been no studies on its relationship with other sensitivity analysis methods. In this paper, we discuss the relationship between $\epsilon$-sensitivity analysis and sensitivity analysis using an optimal basis. First. we present a property of $\epsilon$-sensitivity analysis, from which we derive a simplified formula for finding the characteristic region of $\epsilon$-sensitivity analysis. Next, using the simplified formula, we examine the relationship between $\epsilon$-sensitivity analysis and sensitivity analysis using optimal basis when an $\epsilon$-optimal solution is sufficiently close to an optimal extreme solution. We show that under primal nondegeneracy or dual non degeneracy of an optimal extreme solution, the characteristic region of $\epsilon$-sensitivity analysis converges to that of sensitivity analysis using an optimal basis. However, for the case of both primal and dual degeneracy, we present an example in which the characteristic region of $\epsilon$-sensitivity analysis is different from that of sensitivity analysis using an optimal basis.
The paper presents the simplified matrix stiffness method for analysis of composite and prestressed beams. The method is based on the previously developed "exact" analysis method that uses the mathematical theory of linear integral operators to derive all relations without any mathematical simplifications besides inevitable idealizations related to the material rheological properties. However, the method is limited since the closed-form solution can be found only for specific forms of the concrete creep function. In this paper, the authors proposed the simplified analysis method by introducing the assumption that the unknown deformations change linearly with the concrete creep function. Adopting this assumption, the nonhomogeneous integral system of equations of the "exact" method simplifies to the system of algebraic equations that can be easily solved. Therefore, the proposed method is more suitable for practical applications. Its high level of accuracy in comparison to the "exact" method is preserved, which is illustrated on the numerical example. Also, it is more accurate than the well-known EM method.
This paper presents an optimal design method for determining pile lengths of piled raft foundations. The foundation settlement is evaluated by taking into account the raft-pile-soil interaction. The analysis of settlement is simplified by using Steinbrenner's equation. Then the total pile length is minimized under the settlement constraint. An extended sequential linear programming technique combined with an adaptive step-length algorithm of pile lengths is used to solve the optimal design problem. The accuracy of the simplified settlement analysis method and the validity of the obtained optimal solution are investigated through the comparison with the actual measurement result in existing piled raft foundations.
Welding deformations injure the beauty of appearance of a structure, decrease its buckling strength and prevent increase of productivity. Welding deformations of real structures are complicated and the accurate prediction of welding deformations has been a difficult problem. This study proposes a method to predict the welding deformations of large structures accurately and practically based on the simplified thermal elasto-plastic analysis method. The proposed method combines the inherent strain theory with the numerical or theoretical analysis method and the experimental results. The weld joint is assumed to be divided into 3 regions such as inherent strain region, material softening region and base metal region. Characteristic material properties are used in structural modeling and analysis for reasonable simplification. Calculated results by this method show good agreement with the experimental results. It was proven that this method gives an accurate and efficient solution for the problem of welding deformation calculation of large structures.
