Internet-Based Control and Monitoring System Using LonWorks Fieldbus for HVAC Application

  • The 4-20mA analog signal used in the various industrial fields to interface sensor in distributed process control has been replaced with relatively simple digital networks, called "fieldbus, and recently by Ethernet. Significant advances in Internet and computer technology have made it possible to develop an Internet based control, monitoring, and operation scheduling system for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. The seamless integration of data networks with control networks allows access to any control point from anywhere. Field compatible field devices become so-called "smart" devices, capable of executing simple control, diagnostic and maintenance functions and providing bidirectional serial communication to higher level controller. The most important HVAC of BAS has received nationwide attention because of higher portion of more than 40% in building sector energy use and limited resources. This paper presents the Internet-based monitoring and control architecture and development of LonWorks control modules for AHU (air handling units) of HVAC in viewpoint of configuring BAS network. This article addresses issues in architecture section, electronics, embedded processors and software, and internet technologies.

Liquid Crystal Droplet Patterns to Monitor Catalase Activity at Femtomolar Levels

  • Catalase (CAT) decomposes hydrogen peroxide that is toxic to the body. In this study, simple and sensitive detector has been developed for observing catalase activity using liquid crystal droplet system. Microscale LC droplet patterns are formed by spreading aldehyde-doped nematic liquid crystal on pre-treated glass slides. When hydrogen peroxide is added, aldehyde is oxidized and amphiphiles are formed. Dodecanoates cause the pattern to transit from bright to dark as they self-assemble to form a carboxyalte monolayer at the interface. When a drop of pre-incubated CAT and hydrogen peroxide mixture is placed onto the pattern, bright fan-shape is observed. This planar optical appearance indicates that catalase has decomposed hydrogen peroxide. Compared to the detectors that have been previously developed, this system is more sensitive with detection limit of 1fM. This research suggests further studies to be on LC droplet patterning to develop highly sensitive and methodologically simple sensors for various chemicals.

AN OPTIMIZATION APPROACH FOR COMPUTING A SPARSE MONO-CYCLIC POSITIVE REPRESENTATION

  • The phase-type representation is strongly connected with the positive realization in positive system. We attempt to transform phase-type representation into sparse mono-cyclic positive representation with as low order as possible. Because equivalent positive representations of a given phase-type distribution are non-unique, it is important to find a simple sparse positive representation with lower order that leads to more effective use in applications. A Hypo-Feedback-Coxian Block (HFCB) representation is a good candidate for a simple sparse representation. Our objective is to find an HFCB representation with possibly lower order, including all the eigenvalues of the original generator. We introduce an efficient nonlinear optimization method for computing an HFCB representation from a given phase-type representation. We discuss numerical problems encountered when finding efficiently a stable solution of the nonlinear constrained optimization problem. Numerical simulations are performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • This paper deals with the application of sensitivity method to the parameter estimation for the dynamic analysis of gener-al mechanical system. In this procedure we take the derivatives of the given system with respect to a certain parameter and use this information to implement the steepest descent method. This paper will give two examples of this technique applied to simple vehicle models. This paper will give two examples of this technique applied to simple vehicle models.   • In this paper, the algorithms which can track the two dimensional moving circular object using simple vision system are described. In order to track the moving object, the process of finding the object feature points - such as centroid of the object, corner points, area - is indispensable. With the assumption of two-dimensional circular moving object, the centroid of the circular object is computed from three points on the object circumference. Different kinds of algorithms for computing three edge points - simple x directional detection method, stick method. T-shape method are suggested. Through the computer simulation and experiments, three algorithms are compared from the viewpoint of detection accuracy and computational time efficiency.

  • This paper introduces a dual-arm robot painter system which is capable of sketching a camera-captured image with short line segments. To express various curved edges in the image by combining line segments, we first apply edge detection algorithm to the entire image, split the edged image into small boxed pieces, and then apply Hough Transformation to each piece so that the edges inside the piece can be approximated with short line segments. To draw the picture within a reasonable time, we designed a simple dual-arm robot system and controlled both arms concurrently according to linear interpolation algorithm. From the experiments, we could verify that simple linear motions can describe various images effectively with a unique brush style.

  • Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) has been researched for its superior characteristics. The SRM drive system has simple mechanical and magnetic structure, and it requires simple power electronic drive circuit. It is to be compatible to wide range adjustable speed drive system because it has the same driving characteristics of DC series motor's, easy control principle and high efficiency characteristics. In this paper, 2 types of excitation strategy are researched. Conventional 1-phase excitation and 2-phase excitation method are compared and tested. Though 1-phase excitation method is robust and has high performance, 2-phase excitation method has some merit in appling power device. Some simulation and test results are foaled with some analysis.

  • The identification of nonlinear system using Extended GMDH(EGMDH) is studied in this paper. The proposed EGMDH algorithm is based on GMDH(Group Method of Data handling) method and its structure is similar to Neural Networks. The each node of EGMDH structure utilizes several types of high-order polynomial such as linear, quadratic and cubic, and is connected as various kinds of multi-variable inputs. As the operating condition changes, the parameters of EGMDH will also change, so the proposed scheme by means of the EGMDH method is capable of adapting rapidly to the changing environment. The simulation result shows that the simple nonlinear process can be modeled reasonably well by the proposed method which are simple but efficient.

  • This research aims at developing a low-cost PC-NC system based on one-CPU and investigating the feasibility of its application to a simple-function lathe. Its hardware consists a two axes motion control board including a 24bit counter, 8253 timer, a 12bit DA converter, DIO board for PLC operation and a PC with Intel Pentium 466MHz. The fundamental real-time MC functions such as G-code interpretation, interpolation, position and velocity control of axes are performed. User programming interface with functions of icon manipulation, tool-path simulation and NC-code generation was implemented. In order to achieve real-time control and safety, axis control, NC interpretation, interpolation and user communication are completely executed during every interrupt interval of I msec.

  • In this paper, we deal with two bias compensation algorithms of acceleration sensor for measuring the galloping on power transmission line. Firstly, the block diagram of galloping measurement system is given and a galloping model is presented. Secondly, two compensation algorithms, a simple compensation and a period compensation, are proposed. A simple compensation algorithm use the drafts of velocity and distance at fixed periods, so it is useful for constant bias case. Next, a period compensation algorithm can compensate a periodic bias. This algorithm use the previous measured data and compensated data for constant period, where the period is obtained by FFT method. Lastly, the effectiveness of proposed algorithms is verified by comparing between two algorithms in simulation, and its characteristics and the bias error bound are shown, respectively.
