  • Rigid polyurethane foams (PUF)s were synthesized with environmentally friendly blowing agents such as a cyclopentane/distilled water (10.0/1.0, pphp) mixture and distilled water only for four different silicone surfactants having different silicone/polyether ratios. An attempt was made to reduce the thermal conductivities of the PUF samples by varying the concentration and the silicone/polyether ratio of the various silicone surfactants. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated an optimum concentration of the silicone surfactant of about 1.5 to 2.5 phpp for various surfactants to reduce the cell size and lower the thermal conductivity. The silicone surfactant having a higher silicone/polymer ratio showed a smaller cell size and, therefore, demonstrated the lower thermal conductivity of the PUF samples. From the relation between the thermal conductivity and the cell size of the PUF samples, the smaller cell size improved the thermal insulation property of the rigid PUF for both the PUF samples blown by the cyclopentane/distilled water (10.0/1.0, pphp) mixture and distilled water only. If the blowing agent is fixed, then the cell size is an important factor to decrease the thermal conductivity of the PUF samples. These results indicated that rigid PUF samples having lower thermal conductivity can be obtained by choosing a silicone surfactant containing a higher silicone/polyether ratio, as well as an optimum content of the surfactant.

  • Silicone surfactants are widely used in many industrial area because of its thermal stability and lower foaming property. But it has limitation to expand the application because of migration and bubble generation issues when it is mixed with organic surfactant. In this study, epoxy functionalized fluoro-silicone surfactant, perfluoro glycidoxypropyl polyether siloxane(PFGES), was synthesized using hydrosilylation reaction among perfluoro methyl hydrogen siloxane, allyl glycidyl ether, and allyl ployether in order to get lower surface tension, better thermal stability than conventional silicone surfactant, and reactivity with anhydride function.

  • Silicone dioxide absorbed polyoxyethylene alkylether sulfate (EU-S75D) surfactant was prepared. The core-shell composite of inorganic/organic were polymerized by using styrene(St) as a shell monomer and potassium persulfate(KPS) as an initiator. We studied the effect of surfactants on the core-shell structure of silicone dioxide/styrene in the presence of an anionic surfactant lauryl sulfate(SLS). The structure of core-shell polymer were investigated by measuring to the thermal decomposition of polymer composite using thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and morphology of latex by scanning electron microscope(SEM).

  • Detergency and soil redeposition of wool fabric in drycleaning solvents, i.e. petroleum solvent, perchloroethylene (PCE), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane($D_5$), with commercial detergents were studied. The detergency of wool soiled cloth in drycleaning solvents without detergents were the order of PCE > petroleum solvent > $D_5$. When commercial detergents were added to the system, the detergency were greatly improved. When 1.0% water was added to solvents/commercial detergents system, the detergency of petroleum solvent and PCE improved whereas that of $D_5$ decreased. The soil redeposition prevention effects of solvents were the same order of detergency, i.e. PCE > petroleum solvent > $D_5$. When commercial detergents were added to the system, the soil redeposition changed depending on solvents and detergents. The soil redeposition in $D_5$ became higher with a commercial detergent, therefore it is important to develop appropriate detergents for $D_5$. Three silicone surfactants were tested for detergency and soil redeposition in $D_5$ to find candidate surfactants for drycleaning detergent formulations. Silicone surfactant PEG/PPG-19/19 Dimethicone was found to be the best surfactant for $D_5$ drycleaning detergents.

  • Core-Shell polymers of silicone dioxide-styrene system were prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization. In inorganic/organic Core-Shell composite particle polymerization, silicone dioxide adsorbed by surfactant sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (EU-DO133L) was prepared initially and then core silicone dioxide was encapsulated emulsion by sequential emulsion polymerization using styrene at the addition of potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. We found that $SiO_2$ core shell of $SiO_2$/styrene structure was formed when polymerization of styrene was conducted on the surface of $SiO_2$ particles, and the concentration sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (EU-DO133L) was 0.5~2.0g. The structure of core-shell polymer were investigated by measuring to the thermal decomposition of polymer composite using thermogravimetric analyzer and morphology of latex by scanning electron microscope(SEM).

  • The hydrosilylation is an addition reaction of Si-H bond to unsaturated double bonds, which provides a convenient mechanism to synthesize poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-methylsiloxane)copolymer having siloxy units in polymer backbone. In this study, Poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-methylsiloxane) copolymer was synthesized through the polymerization reaction of cyclopentasiloxane with poly(methyl-hydrogen) siloxane. Silicone-hydrogen functional group of the poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-methylsiloxane) copolymer was substituted to the alkyl groups by hydrosilylation. And their structure was analyzed with FT-IR, H-NMR and GPC instruments, respectively. Surface tension of the synthetic compounds is increased from 22dyne/cm to 25dyne/cm according to increase additional EO moles. The cmc which was evaluated by surface tension was ranged $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-4}mol/L$ and it was decreased according to increase of dimethyl siloxyl content. HLB number of these surfactants was evaluated 9.5 to 11.5 range. These silicone surfactants is applied to self-emulsifier defoamer and personal care products as surface tension depressant, emulsifier, foam control agent.

  • A highly dispersed W/O emulsion of silicone oil (cyclomethicone)/water system was prepared with a nonionic surfactant. The surface and interfacial tension between the oil and water were characterized in terms of the droplet size distribution and viscosity change of the emulsion. When the dispersed phase concentration was relatively high, the viscosity of the emulsion was rapidly increased and the droplet size of the emulsion was decreased. The rheological behavior of the emulsion system showed non-Newtonian and shear thinning phenomena depending upon the content of the dispersed phase. The droplet size of the emulsion was decreased with increasing surfactant content and water concentration. The relative viscosity of the emulsion was better predicted with the Choi-Schowalter model than with the Taylor model. The value of the complex modulus increased with increasing surfactant concentration. The linear viscoelastic region was expanded with a dispersed phase concentration. According to the change in the viscosity, the behavior was classified into three distinct regions: [I] linear viscoelastic, [II] partially viscoelastic, and [III] viscous. The creep/recovery behaviors in each region were characterized.

  • Silicone dioxide absorbed polyoxyethylene alkylether sulfate (EU-S133D) surfactant was prepared. Core-shell polymers of inorganic/organic pair, which have both core and shell component, were synthesized by sequential emulsion polymerization using Acrylate as a shell monomer and potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. We found that when Acrylate core prepared by adding 2.0 wt% EU-S133D, silicone dioxide/Acrylate core-shell polymerization was carried out on the surface of silicone dioxide particle without forming the new silicone dioxide particle during acrylate shell polymerization in the inorganic/organic core-shell polymer preparation. The structure of core-shell polymer were investigated by measuring to the thermal decomposition of polymer composite using thermogravimetric analyzer and morphology of latex by scanning electron microscope(SEM).

  • Magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized by adding an ammonium hydroxide to a mixed solution of iron (II) and (III) chlorides. A silicon surfactant of ${\alpha},{\omega}$-(3-aminopropyl)polydimethylsiloxane was adsorbed on the particles as dispersant and a polydimethylsiloxane polymer was used to prepare ferrofluids of silicone oil base. Fluorinated surfactants of anionic ammoniated perfluoroalkyl sulfonamide and nonionic fluoroaliphatic polymeric esters were applied to the particles and a perfluoropolyether was used to prepare ferrofluids of fluorine oil base. The experimental conditions were used for preparing the ferrofluids with concentrations of 200, 300 and 400 mg/mL, and density, magnetization and viscosity of the products were characterized. The density values increased in proportion to the concentration, indicating 1.11-1.27 g/mL for silicone-oil-based fluids and 1.95-2.10 g/mL for fluorine-oil-based fluids in the range of 200-400 mg/mL. The saturation magnetization of the silicone-oil-based and fluorine-oil-based fluids indicated 14.7, 24.4, and 30.7 mT and 15.8, 23.3, and 33.7 mT for 200, 300, and 400 mg/mL, respectively, depending on the content of magnetic particles in the fluid. The viscosity of the silicone-oil-based ferrofluids was highly stable compared to that of the fluorine-oil-based with increasing temperatures. The ferrofluids are usually applied to seals and speakers with the silicone base and to seals with the fluorine base.

  • To enhance the stability of dispersed polyaniline (PANI) particles in a silicone oil system, a nonionic surfactant was adopted, and its effect on the electrorheological (ER) performance was investigated under an applied electric field. In the presence of a nonionic surfactant, the PANI based ER fluid exhibited not only an improved sedimentation stability based on the estimated sedimentation ratio but also an enhanced maximum yield stress behavior. Furthermore, the surfactant added ER suspension was applied to an ER damper system, and its damping performance was compared with the ER suspension without a surfactant.
