  • This paper presents the implementation of an automatic road sign recognizer for an intelligent transport system. In this system, lists of road signs are processed with actions such as line segmentation, single sign segmentation, and storing an artificial sign in the database. The process of taking the video stream and extracting the road sign and storing in the database is called the road sign recognition. This paper presents a study on recognizing traffic sign patterns using a segmentation technique for the efficiency and the speed of the system. The image is converted from one scale to another scale such as RGB to grayscale or grayscale to binary. The images are pre-processed with several image processing techniques, such as threshold techniques, Gaussian filters, Canny edge detection, and the contour technique.

  • Road sign is an important street furniture that gives some information such as road conditions, driving direction and condition for a driver. Thus, road sign is a major target of image recognition for self-driving car, ADAS(autonomous vehicle and intelligent driver assistance systems), and ITS(intelligent transport systems). In this paper, an enhanced road sign recognition system is proposed for MMS(Mobile Mapping System) using the single camera and GPS. For the proposed system, first, a road sign recognition scheme is proposed. this scheme is composed of detection and classification step. In the detection step, object candidate regions are extracted in image frames using hybrid road sign detection scheme that is based on color and shape features of road signs. And, in the classification step, the area of candidate regions and road sign template are compared. Second, a Geo-marking scheme for geo-content that is consist of road sign image and coordinate value is proposed. If the serious situation such as car accident is happened, this scheme can protect geographical information of road sign against illegal users. By experiments with test video set, in the three parts that are road sign recognition, coordinate value estimation and geo-marking, it is confirmed that proposed schemes can be used for MMS in commercial area.

  • Sign language spotting is the task of detecting and recognizing the signs in a signed utterance. The difficulty of sign language spotting is that the occurrences of signs vary in both motion and shape. Moreover, the signs appear within a continuous gesture stream, interspersed with transitional movements between signs in a vocabulary and non-sign patterns(which include out-of-vocabulary signs, epentheses, and other movements that do not correspond to signs). In this paper, a novel method for designing a threshold model in a conditional random field(CRF) model is proposed. The proposed model performs an adaptive threshold for distinguishing between signs in the vocabulary and non-sign patterns. A hand appearance-based sign verification method, a short-sign detector, and a subsign reasoning method are included to further improve sign language spotting accuracy. Experimental results show that the proposed method can detect signs from continuous data with an 88% spotting rate and can recognize signs from isolated data with a 94% recognition rate, versus 74% and 90% respectively for CRFs without a threshold model, short-sign detector, subsign reasoning, and hand appearance-based sign verification.

  • This study identities various types of subjective perception of hearing-impaired persons on sign language interpretation using Q-methodology in an attempt to explore ways for developing more useful sign language interpretation services for them. For this purpose, 35 statements are extracted based on literatures and in-depth interviews and Q-classification is conducted for 20 interviewees. The results identify a common perception on the provision of sign language interpreter to frequently used institutions of hearing-impaired persons. They also derive three distinguished types of perception: seeking specialization of sign language interpretation, seeking traditional sign language interpretation services and seeking expansion and improvement of sign language interpretation services. Based on the results, the study suggests residence of sign language interpreters in public facilities, improvements of qualification system and education and training courses, specialization by field and improvement of the practice of sign language interpretation services, provision of customized services to the elderly and use of sign language interpreters reflecting the needs of the users.

  • Serum complement proteins comprise an important system that is responsible for several innate and adaptive immune defence mechanisms. There were three well described pathways known to lead to the generation of a C3 convertase, which catalyses the proteolysis of complement component C3, and leads to the formation of C3 opsonins (C3b, iC3b and C3d) that fix to bacteria. A pivotal step in the complement pathway is the assembly of a C3 convertase, which digests the C3 complement component to form microbial-binding C3 fragments recognized by leukocytes. The spleen clears microorganisms from the blood. Individuals lacking this organ are more susceptible to Streptococcus pneumoniae. Innate resistance to S. pneumoniae has previously been shown to involve complement components C3 and C4, however this resistance has only a partial requirement for mediators of these three pathways, such as immunoglobulin, factor B and mannose-binding lectin. Therefore it was likely that spleen and complement system provide resistance against blood-borne S. pneumoniae infection through unknown mechanism. To better understand the mechanisms involved, we studied Specific intracellular adhesion molecule-grabbing nonintegrin (SIGN)-R1. SIGN-R1, is a C-type lectin that is expressed at high levels by spleen marginal-zone macrophages and lymph-node macrophages. SIGN-R1 has previously been shown to be the main receptor for bacterial dextrans, as well as for the capsular pneumococcal polysaccharide (CPS) of S. pneumoniae. We examined the specific role of this receptor in the activation of complement. Using a monoclonal antibody that selectively downregulates SIGN-R1 expression in vivo, we show that in response to S. pneumoniae or CPS, SIGN-R1 mediates the immediate proteolysis of C3 and fixation of C3 opsonins to S. pneumoniae or to marginal-zone macrophages that had taken up CPS. These data indicate that SIGN-R1 is largely responsible for the rapid C3 convertase formation induced by S. pneumoniae in the spleen of mice. Also, we found that SIGN-R1 directly binds C1q and that C3 fixation by SIGN-R1 requires C1q and C4 but not factor B or immunoglobulin. Traditionally C3 convertase can be formed by the classical C1q- and immunoglobulin-dependent pathway, the alternative factor-B-dependent pathway and the soluble mannose-binding lectin pathway. Furthermore Conditional SIGN-R1 knockout mice developed deficits in C3 catabolism when given S. pneumoniae or its capsular polysaccharide intravenously. There were marked reductions in proteolysis of serum C3, deposition of C3 on organisms within SIGN-$R1^+$ spleen macrophages, and formation of C3 ligands. The transmembrane lectin SIGN-R1 therefore contributes to innate resistance by an unusual C3 activation pathway. We propose that in the SIGN-R1 mediated complement activation pathway, after binding to polysaccharide, SIGN-R1 captures C1q. SIGN-R1 can then, in association with several other complement proteins including C4, lead to the formation of a C3 convertase and fixation of C3. Therefore, this new pathway for C3 fixation by SIGN-R1, which is unusual as it is a classical C1q-dependent pathway that does not require immuno globulin, contributes to innate immune resistance to certain encapsulated microorganisms.

  • Purpose To evaluate the diagnostic utility of the stalk and the inchworm sign on preoperative MRI for detecting superficial bladder cancers, and to compare the diagnostic performance between the stalk and the inchworm sign. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed 240 patients (505 tumors) who had undergone radical cystectomy. The tumors were classified as follows: superficial or invasive tumors indicated by the stalk or inchworm sign on 3.0 Tesla MRI. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of the stalk and inchworm signs, by comparing each finding with the postoperative pathologic T stage. We compared diagnostic performance between them statistically. Results The stalk and inchworm signs showed high specificity (93% and 91%, respectively), positive predictive values (89% and 90%, respectively), and acceptable accuracy (70% and 74%, respectively), but low sensitivity (54% and 61%, respectively) and negative predictive values (60% and 63%, respectively). There was no statistically significant difference between the two signs (p > 0.05). Conclusion Superficial bladder cancers could be differentiated from invasive tumors using the stalk or inchworm sign on MRI.

  • The main aim of the paper is to reveal what is the sign in art and architecture and what is difference between technology and art. By keeping in mind the suggestions of Heidegger's four different worlds, we become able to discern or elaborate on four different contexts of signs and modes in which the sign can work. World (1) is not conceptualized by selected relations of some of things' aspects with one another; rather, it is constructed by our sensory impressions. The sign of World (1) simply points to other objects occurring in the situation. World (2) emerges as an ontological term, and signifies, in terms of relations that are now brought systematically forth, the Being of those entities of World (1) which we naively perceive or take for granted. The sign of World (2) signifies a constructed world. World (3) is understood as the 'wherein' or environment of beings whose total activity is proven to be inseparable from their circumstances. The sign of World (3) is to recover the perspicuous silence of World (3). The World (4) is the ontological-existential understanding of worldhood. The sign of World (4) is to reveal the conspicuous silence of World (4). Finally, the paper suggests that art including architecture cannot be the sign of World (1), (2) but the one of World (3).

  • In this paper we have proposed the sign language transformation system for deaf based on a morpheme analysis. The proposed system extracts phoneme components and connection informations of the input character sequence by using a morpheme analysis. And then the sign image obtained by component analysis is correctly and automatically generated through the sign image database. For the effective sign language transformation, the language description dictionary which consists of a morpheme analysis part for analysis of input character sequence and sign language description part for reference of sign language pattern is costructed. To avoid the duplicating sign language pattern, the pattern is classified a basic, a compound and a similar sign word. The computer simulation shows the usefulness of the proposed system.

  • The sign recognition and translation offer information and support decision making for foreigners or city tourist. Collecting sign images and building words in signs are essential to train machine recognizers and to evaluate systems. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of sign images. The collected sign images are about 1000 captured from difference conditions and locations. We also build a dictionary of words in 100,000 sign names.
