Background: The leaves of the goji berry (Lycium chinense Mill.) are used as raw materials in processing and by replace fruits to some extent. The reason is that the leaves are cheaper, however, betaine content is higher than in the fruits. These experiments were conducted to determine the planting density and cutting height for producing a large number of leaves. Methods and Results: The cultivar 'Myeongan' with many branches was used. When the shoot height reached 50 cm - 70 cm, harvesting was possible four times a year. The time to next harvest was approximately 38 days after regeneration of new shoots. Leaf quantity was in the order of 1st > 2nd > 4th > 3rd harvest. Insect damage occurred during the third harvest in late July and early August, therefore, eco-friendly control was necessary. The total yield was higher at the planting density 60 cm × 30 cm than that of 60 cm × 20 cm or 60 cm × 40 cm. The yield at cutting for shoot height of 60 cm was increased by 6.3 percent compared to that of 50 cm, At the cutting height of 70 cm, harvest was difficult owing to hardening of stems and thorns. Betaine content, an indicator component of goji berry, was not significantly different according to planting densities and cutting height. Conclusions: The ideal cutting period to produce leaves of goji berry for processing is when the shoots grow to approximately 60 cm, and the leaves can be harvested 4 times a year. The dried-leaf yield was highest at the planting density of 60 cm × 30 cm.
In Korea, mowing the grass of a grave (Beolcho) is a very important event preceded by Chuseok (Korean thanks giving day) and Si-Hyang (annual ancestral feast). Because Beolcho usually takes place one or two weeks before Chuseok, the traffic accidents on roads are getting worse and safety accidents are getting more and more. Erroneous Beolcho methods can cause the soil to be exposed and cause the loss of soil or the low shoot density of graveyard grass or weed occurrence. Therefore, the dispersion of the Beolcho timing and the approprite method can be import issues. The present study assessed the effects of grass mowing timing and height before Chuseok on the growth of Zoysia japonica and Z. matrella. The mowing timing was evaluated at 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks before Chuseok, and the mowing height differently according to the two type of grass. In Z. japonica, the faster mowing before Chuseok, the longer the plant height, and the coverage rate and shoot density were higher. In Z. matrella, the faster mowing, the longer the shoot length, but the coverage rate and shoot density did not show any difference or tendency. As compared to Z. japonica, the plant height of Z. matrella was kept short regardless of the time of mowing. In both grasses, the plant height was shortened when mowing was done at low cutting height, but the coverage rate and shoot density were decreased. In addition, it was shown that it is advantageous to maintain the shoot density of graveyard lawn by 40-50 mm or 30-40 mm cutting above the ground for Z. japonica or Z. matrella, respectively.
The structure, clonal grwoth, shoot modules dynamics and rhizome respiratory rate of the Phragmites longivalvis circular patch were studied in a 15-year-old reclaimed land on Mado of the western Korea for two growing seasons. Clonal growth by P. longivalvis resulted in subpopulations of shoot modules which may be separated into pioneer, mature and senile growth phase. The radial growth of circular patch was 208 cm per a year. The shoot phytomass, shoot height and spike frequency were the lowest in the senile phase, and were the highest in the mature phase. The maximum shoot phytomass of pioneer, mature and senile phase in August was 347, 536 and 195g/$\m^2$ for the first year, and 609, 748 and 248g/$\m^2$ for the second year, respectively. The birth rates of shoot modules were the highest during the early spring. Of all modules, the percemtage of spring cohort of pioneer, mature and senile growth phase were 52, 82 and 70% for the first year, and 83, 88 and 85% for the second year, respectively. The flowering shoots were only derived from spring cohorts. The death rates of shoot modules of the pioneer and mature phase were the highest in October. The module is an annual semelparous plant though the genet is a perennial iteroparous plant. Their survivorship curve was negatively (Deevey type I). The density of shoot modules of the pioneer, mature and senile growth phase increased as much as 4.0, 1.6 and 2.3 times for one year, respectively. The respiratory rate was the highest in the lowest in the senile growth phase.

This study was carried out to have the basic and applied information to develop the cultivation methods and models and to increase the productivity of high-quality ginseng. Plant height was dramatically increased from one year old to four years old, and then it was grown up very slowly. Stem length was shown similar tendency as the plant height did. Its range were from 9.4 cm in one year old to about 42.4 cm in four year-old ginseng. The leaf area was clearly increased until four years old, $10.1cm^2$ in one year old to $204.9cm^2$ in four years old, while it was slightly increased after four years old. Root length was continuously increased from one year old until four years old, and then it was grown up very slowly. Tap root length which was measured was appeared about 8 cm from three years old to six years old, showing not much different among the year-olds. The root diameter was continuously increased from one year old to six year-old ginseng, about 2.9 mm and about 19 mm, respectively. The moisture content was higher on the shoot than that on the root. It was slightly decreased as they were getting old. In shoot part, the rate of leaves and stems based on dry weight was about 1 : 1. In the root, the dry weight of tap root was heavier than that of lateral root. The dry weight of shoot was decreased after four years old, while it of the root was continuously increased until six years old, resulting the production of ginseng root. Based on the results of this study, growth characteristics of shoot and root of ginseng were dramatically increased from one year old to four years old and then their growths were appeared different between shoot and root, showing not much growing in shoot and keep growing in root.
Marked declines in seagrass meadows are increasingly being reported from coasts around Korea and many regions of the world. The transplantation of seagrasses has been attempted to mitigate and control their degradation from a range of anthropogenic factors. In this study, Zostera marina shoots, which were collected from a donor bed in Koje Bay, were transplanted in Jindong Bay in December 2004. In 2008, a comparative investigation of shoot morphology, growth, and reproduction strategy of Z. marina was carried out between the donor and transplant sites to assess their adaptation success. Shoot height, individual shoot weight, and leaf productivity at the transplant site were significantly greater than those at the donor site. However, below-/aboveground tissue ratio was significantly lower at the transplant site compared to the donor site. Z. marina survival was maintained through vegetative reproduction, while peak season for lateral shoot recruitment was late winter for both donor and transplant site populations. However, vegetative reproduction mainly occurred during late winter and spring at the transplant site, whereas lateral shoots were evident across all seasons except late spring in the donor site. More pronounced seasonal variations were found at the transplant site compared to the donor site. These results indicate that Z. marina populations at the two sites possess distinct phenotypic variations induced by different environmental conditions, and Z. marina transplants have adapted well to the new transplant environment.
Thirty-six $F_3$ hybrid poplar (Populus trichocarpa${\times}$P. deltoides) clones were fumigated with ozone to select for ozone sensitive and resistant clones. Fumigation was applied for 6 to 8 hours each day for approximately 3 months at ozone concentrations of 90 to 115 ppb using by open-top chambers. Height, diameter, number of leaves, total biomass, biomass components, root/shoot ratios, leaf drop and stomatal response were investigated. In summary, ozone generally reduced height, diameter, number of leaves, total biomass, and root/shoot ratios. Ozone stress induced leaf drop and foliar senescence in trees. This study showed very low relationship between total biomass and stomatal conductance. Increased plant resistant to ozone is not always correlated with stomatal behaviour. Probably, characterization of biochemical and other physiological responses to ozone exposure can provide a better understanding of tree response to ozone environment.
This study was conducted to examine the changes in growths of tomato and watermelon seedlings and the relationship among growth parameters which are used to evaluate healthy seedling as affected by shading. Plants were grown under 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% shadings using polyethylene films. Leaf area index (LAI) of tomato and grafted watermelon seedlings increased under 50% and 75% shading. Total dry weight decreased with increase of shading level. The growth rates of stem diameter, LAI, total weight were faster under 50% and 75% shading with increase of integral radiation than under 0% and 25% shading. Stem diameters of tomato and grafted watermelon seedlings showed no significant differences among shading regimes. Stem diameters of tomato seedlings had upward tendency with increase of total dry weight and shoot height, but there were no significant differences among shading regimes. Stem diameters of grafted watermelon seedlings had no relationship with shoot height. These results indicate that stem diameter of tomato seedlings is not appropriate for assessing seedlings quality but stem diameter of grafted watermelon seedlings with shoot height is available.
The study was carried out to clarify reasonable production of healthy seedling, optimal Pot depth, and appropriate transplanting time, which can be deduced from understanding of seedling quality. Seedling quality results from growth of root and shoot, morphology and distribution of root system under influence of Pot depth during seedling growing period. Stem height, shoot dry weight, leaf area and leaf number were increased in proportion to depth of pots. Growth of shoot and root during seedling growing period showed the most dramatic development between 20th and 25th day after temporary planting. Root number increased as pot depth decrease and total root length and dry weight increased as pot depth increase. In 5cm pot, relative multiplication rate was higher and mean extension rate was lower than other depth of Pot. The limitation of pot volume in which rhizosphere was located enhance the development of roots of second and third order. At 20th days after temporary Planting root distribution was relatively uniform in length and development of adventitious root on stem base was poor as Pot depth decreased.
This is the first report describing the seasonal conditions affecting shoot regeneration by the chrysanthemum cv. Baeksun. The shoot regeneration from petal explants was found to be more favorable from September to December, reaching the highest values in December. In addition, the quality of the shoots was also influenced according to the season of the explant collection, where healthy and uniform plants were derived from the explants collected in December. Choosing the proper season for explant collection affected the successive plant growth parameters (i.e., plant height and fresh weight). Thus, the current results strongly suggest that season plays an important role in plant tissue culturing, which is an essential tool for micropropagation and Agro-bacterium-mediated genetic transformation studies.
This study was conducted to determine the optimum concentrations of growth regulators and their responses on the clonal propagation in axillary bud culture. Cultivars, Hongmi and Shinmi, responded differently to the levels of growth regulators, proliferation rate and shoot growth. The shoot and root of Hongmi cultivar in axillary bud culture were conspicuously induced by combination of NAA(0.1mg/l) and Kinetin(1mg/l) while Shinmi cultivar were affected by the single concentration of Kinetin(1mg/l) and BA(0.1mg/l), and also by the combination of NAA(0.1mg/l) and Kinetin(1mg/l). Better shoot growth and root initiation were obtained in the combination of NAA(0.1mg/l) and Kinetin(1mg/l) regardless of cultivars used when 5mm axillary buds were cultured. The shoots regenerated at the high levels of BA(1-5mg/l) were abnormally thicker and narrower leaves than normal plants and short in shoot height. Frequencies of abnormal plants were higher than that of the low level (0.1mg/l) of BA.
