The objective of this study was to examine the effect of root pruning intensity in combination with different initial seedling size on the growth of transplanting seedlings of Quercus acutissima. One-year-old seedlings were divided into three groups depending on their height, i.e. small (< 15 cm), medium (25-35 cm) and large size (35 cm <). Root of seedlings was pruned by three intensity such as, leaving 5 cm (severe), 10 cm (medium) and 15 cm (light) of taproot from the root-collar. After one year, we investigated survival rate, height and root-collar diameter (RCD) increment and final shoot dry weight. Also we measured characteristics of newly developed lateral roots such as number, total length, dry weight and diameter. Severe root pruning showed the lowest survival rate in all seedling size. Height increment, RCD increment and shoot dry weight were decreased with increasing intensity of root pruning. Seedlings of medium and light root pruning showed similar above-ground growth and dry weight of lateral roots. More large seedlings showed good survival rate, height increment and final shoot dry mass in all root pruning intensity. Therefore, one-year-old seedlings of Q. acutissima should be pruned taproot by 10 cm and transplanted to obtain excellent performance and increase the efficiency of transplanting work. Based on the findings of this study, it is important that applying to different root pruning intensity depending on initial seedling size for producing 2-year-old seedlings with excellent growth and high quality.
The synergistic effect on phosphate solubilization of single- and co-inoculation of two phosphate solubilizing bacteria, Burkholderia cepacia (C1) and Alcaligenes aquatilis (H6), was assessed in liquid medium and maize plants. Co-inoculation of two strains was found to release the highest content of soluble phosphorus (309.66 ?g/mL) into the medium, followed by single inoculation of B. cepacia (305.49 ?g/mL) and A. aquatilis strain (282.38 ?g/mL). Based on a plant growth promotion bioassay, co-inoculated maize seedlings showed significant increases in shoot height (75%), shoot fresh weight (93.10%), shoot dry weight (84.99%), root maximum length (55.95%), root fresh weight (66.66%), root dry weight (275%), and maximum leaf length (81.53%), compared to the uninoculated control. In a field experiment, co-inoculated maize seedlings showed significant increases in cob length (136.92%), number of grain/cob (46.68%), and grain weight (67.46%) over control. In addition, single inoculation of maize seedlings also showed improved result over control. However, there was no significant difference between single inoculation of either bacterial strains and co-inoculation of these two bacterial strains in terms of phosphate solubilization index, phosphorous release, pH of the media, and plant growth parameters. Thus, single inoculation and co-inoculation of these bacteria could be used as biofertilizer for improving maize growth and yield.
The study was carried out to clarify reasonable production of healthy seedling, optimal Pot depth, and appropriate transplanting time, which can be deduced from understanding of seedling quality. Seedling quality results from growth of root and shoot, morphology and distribution of root system under influence of Pot depth during seedling growing period. Stem height, shoot dry weight, leaf area and leaf number were increased in proportion to depth of pots. Growth of shoot and root during seedling growing period showed the most dramatic development between 20th and 25th day after temporary planting. Root number increased as pot depth decrease and total root length and dry weight increased as pot depth increase. In 5cm pot, relative multiplication rate was higher and mean extension rate was lower than other depth of Pot. The limitation of pot volume in which rhizosphere was located enhance the development of roots of second and third order. At 20th days after temporary Planting root distribution was relatively uniform in length and development of adventitious root on stem base was poor as Pot depth decreased.

This study was conducted to evaluate to the effect of liquid fertilizer with saponin (SLF) and liquid fertilizer with amino acid (ALF)on the growth of creeping bentgrass. In creeping bentgrass, turf color index, chlorophyll index, dry weight and shoot number were measured. It was hardly affected by SLF and ALF applications in investigation of chemical properties of the soil. By applying SLF and ALF, turf color index and chlorophyll index in 2SLF and 2ALF were increased more than CF, and shoot number and root length in 2SLF, ALF and 2ALF were higher than CF. In correlation coefficient among growth factors of creeping bentgrass, turf quality was significantly different in root length, shoot number, dry weight, and content of N and K in turf tissue (P<0.05), N content of tissue was significantly in root length, shoot number and dry weight (P<0.05), and K content was significantly in shoot number and dry weight (P<0.05). These results suggested that application of functional liquid fertilizers such as SLF and ALF was expected to replace compound fertilizer in turf management and that applied SLF and ALF was stimulated the uptake of N and K into turf so that turf qualities were improved by enhancing growth shoot and root of turf.
Background: The aim of this study was to examine the resource allocation among the organs and the leaf morphology of Polygonatum humile. The data were collected from June 2014 to May 2015 in a natural P. humile stand of a temperate forest gap. Results: The dry weight of new rhizome ($R_0$) sharply decreased to the time of new shoot sprouting in next year and was constant for 2 ~ 3 years. However, dry weight of root on $R_0$ increased to the end of growth season and, thereafter, decreased slowly along the time elapsed. The correlation coefficients between the rhizome and the leaf sizes were 0.5 for the last year's rhizome ($R_1$) and 0.6 for $R_0$ and were significant at 0.1% level for $R_0$. The increase of one leaf a plant led to increase of the total leaf area, total leaf weight, and stem length. Moreover, the organ sizes' differences between two plants of the one leaf difference were almost significant at 1% level. In 11-leaf plant, the leaf length/width ratio and specific lea area increased to the second, relative leaf area to the fourth and relative leaf dry weight to the fifth, and thereafter, decreased to the last leaf. The differences in the values of these four parameters between two leaves on a stem were almost significant at 5% level. Conclusion: P. humile examined showed the close relationships between the last year's rhizome or this year's one and the shoot system (leaf and stem) sizes. The leaf number a shoot greatly influenced specific leaf area. P. humile's leaf might showed diverse morphology with leaf rank on a stem in a forest gap environment.
To select new germplasm for salinity tolerance from new plant type (NPT) breeding lines, the sixty F$_4$ lines selected from the crosses between Korean cultivars and IRRI's NPT lines were evaluated for salinity tolerance at the seedling stage with salinized culture solution (EC=12 dS/m) in the controlled conditions. Two NTP lines derived from a cross between 'Ilmibyeo' and 'IR66152-AC5-1', 'HR15258-7-1' and 'HR15258-27-1', were found to have good tolerance. The salinity tolerance of the lines was compared to their parents and the sensitive ('IR29') and tolerant ('Pokkali') checks in three salinity levels, no salinity (control) and an EC of 12 and 16 dS/m. Visual salinity score, shoot Na+ and Na-K ratio in two NPT lines was significantly low compared with the parents and IR29. Indicating that salinity tolerance of the lines might be derived from a transgressive segregation. The relative water content of the lines was higher than Pokkali, and the dry weight of shoot and root was proportionally decreased to salinity score and salinizing concentration. The visual salinity scores were significantly correlated with shoot Na concentration, Na-K ratio, relative water content, and reduction of dry weight (P<0.01). Their tolerance was attributed to root and shoot characteristics that led to high shoot water content, thus diluting the toxic effect of salts.

Slow seedling growth rate and nodulation failure of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) has been limited its good establishment to pastures. The experiment was done to determine the effect of removal of cotyledon and unifoliolate on the shoot, root growth, and nodule formation of 4 white clover cultivars for 8 weeks after the treatment. Four white clover cv. Regal (large leaf), Louisiana S-I (medium-large leaf), Grasslands Huia (mediumsmall leaf), and Aberystwyth S184 (small leaf), were grown in IOcm plastic pot containing 2:l:l soi1:sand:peat moss mixture until grown to cotyledon or unifoliolate stage and then removed one (Cl) or two cotyledons (C2) at cotyledon stage, and unifoliolate only (U), unifoliolate and one cotyledon (UCl) or unifoliolate and two cotyledons (UC2) at the unifoliolate stage, and the plants were sampled at 4, 6 and 8 weeks after the treatments. The intact plants had greater shoot and root dry weights, and no. of nodules than removal-treated ones. Removal treatments at cotyledon stage, the dry weight and no. of nodules more decreased in C1 and C2 than that of unifoliolate stage. While the severer cotyledon removal, the more reduction. Although the dry weights and no. of nodules steadily inclined with regrowing period, the former were higher in Regal and La. S-1 than in the others since 6 weeks after removal treatment but the latter was more in S 184 than in the others 8 weeks after removal treatment. Relationship between no. of nodules and shoot or root dry weight was analysed as linear mode while the earlier and severe removal, the steeper slope. It was concluded that severer damage of cotyledon and unifoliolate had detrimental effects on the shoot and root growth, nodule formation, and aftermath establishment of white clover.
For autumn field cutting of Sedum sarmentosum, the effects of cutting site (distal, middle, and proximal) and planting method (space drill seeding, drill seeding, and broadcast seeding) on survival rate and growth characteristics were investigated at pre- and post-winter season. Plant height root length, stem number per plant, number of branch per plant, fresh weight of shoot, and dry weight of shoot were significantly superior in distal site at pre-wintering (40 days after cutting). At post-wintering (May 10th), stem number per plant, fresh weight and dry weight per $m^2$ in cutting of distal site showed a significant increasement compared to the cutting of proximal site. At pre-wintering (40 days after cutting), the growth in space drill seeding was well than that in drill seeding and broadcast seeding, and fresh weight and dry weight per $m^2$ in space drill seeding were high in order of space drill seeding, broadcast seeding, and drill seeding. At post-wintering (May 10th), stem number per plant, fresh weight and dry weight per $m^2$ in space drill seeding were significantly increased than those in drill seeding. Accordingly, the cutting using distal site of stem in autumn field cutting was desirable for the growth and shoot yield. The space drill seeding showed the highest yield potential among three seeding methods, but broadcast seeding was favorable in saving of labor, because the fresh weight of shoot in broadcast seeding was similar in the space drill seeding at post-wintering.

A pot experiment was conducted to assess the effects of red pepper (Capsicum annuum) and coriander (Coriandrum sativum) on seedling growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum). The aqueous extracts treatment of red pepper and coriander showed a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in root, shoot and seedling length, number of leaves and seedling dry weight of wheat (T. aestivum) as compared to control. The inhibitory different effect on growth of wheat (T. aestivum) was directly proportional to the increasing concentration (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5%) of aqueous extracts of red pepper and coriander as compared to control treatment (0%). The root, shoot, seedling length and number of leaves of T. aestivum significantly p < 0.05 decreased at 5% concentration of red pepper as compared to control. The root, shoot and seedling growth of T. aestivum was also significantly reduced at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5% concentration of coriander as compared to control. The root, shoot and leaves dry weight of T. aestivum at 5% coriander extract treatment concentration decreased as compared to control. The tolerance in seedlings of T. aestivum to red pepper and coriander extract treatment was dose dependent as compared to control. The seedlings of T. aestivum showed low percentage of tolerance to pepper extract treatment than coriander extract treatment.

This study was carried out to have the basic and applied information to develop the cultivation methods and models and to increase the productivity of high-quality ginseng. Plant height was dramatically increased from one year old to four years old, and then it was grown up very slowly. Stem length was shown similar tendency as the plant height did. Its range were from 9.4 cm in one year old to about 42.4 cm in four year-old ginseng. The leaf area was clearly increased until four years old, $10.1cm^2$ in one year old to $204.9cm^2$ in four years old, while it was slightly increased after four years old. Root length was continuously increased from one year old until four years old, and then it was grown up very slowly. Tap root length which was measured was appeared about 8 cm from three years old to six years old, showing not much different among the year-olds. The root diameter was continuously increased from one year old to six year-old ginseng, about 2.9 mm and about 19 mm, respectively. The moisture content was higher on the shoot than that on the root. It was slightly decreased as they were getting old. In shoot part, the rate of leaves and stems based on dry weight was about 1 : 1. In the root, the dry weight of tap root was heavier than that of lateral root. The dry weight of shoot was decreased after four years old, while it of the root was continuously increased until six years old, resulting the production of ginseng root. Based on the results of this study, growth characteristics of shoot and root of ginseng were dramatically increased from one year old to four years old and then their growths were appeared different between shoot and root, showing not much growing in shoot and keep growing in root.
