An Experimental Study on the Heat Exchange Performance at Various EGR Cooler Types (EGR 쿨러 Type에 따른 열교환성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Nitrogen oxide(NOx) emission reductions are required to meet the strict emission regulations for environmental protection. Most of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) system applied to a diesel engine can relatively decrease the NOx at a low cost, but it has a disadvantage in that the PM generation is promoted due to the hot intake air temperature. Thus, high heat exchange efficiency of the EGR cooler is required for an effective removal of NOx. In this study, heat exchange efficiency for various types of heat exchangers used in EGR cooler was measured under same conditions, and determined best heat exchange performance shape depending on type of heat exchanger.

Numerical analysis for heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of (다양한 배플 인자에 따른 셀-튜브 열교환기의 열전달 및 압력강하 특성에 관한 수치해석)

  • In numbers of kinds of heat exchanger, the shell-tube heat exchanger is the most commonly used type of heat exchanger in the industry field. In order to improve the thermal performance of the heat exchanger, this study was analyzed heat transfer characteristics according to arrangement of baffle and direction of baffle and bump phase of baffle about shell-tube heat exchanger using appropriate SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model for flow separation and boundary layer analysis. As the boundary condition for CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, the inlet temperature of shell side was constantly 344 K and the variation of the water flow rate was 6, 12, 18 and 24 l/min. As the result of analysis, zigzag baffle arrangement enhances heat transfer rate and pressure drop. Furthermore, in the direction of the baffle, heat transfer rate is more improved with vertical type and angle $45^{\circ}$ type than existing type, and pressure drop was little difference. Also, the bump shape of baffle surface contributes to heat transfer rate and pressure drop improvement due to the increased heat transfer area. Through analysis results, we knew that the increase of the heat transfer was influenced by flow separation, fluid residual time, contact area with the tube, flow rate, swirl and so on.

  • The flow pattern inside the inlet chamber of the tube side is one of the key parameters influencing on the performances of the shell-and-tube type of heat exchangers(STHE). In order to improve the flow distribution, the baffle shaped as the porous plate is installed in the inlet chambers. In the present study, numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the flow features of the tube side of the STHE in sense of the hydraulic performances. The flow fields have been analysed by the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solvers with the proper turbulent models. Computational domain is ranged in the whole of the tube side of the STHE. The numerical results showed that the presence of the baffles improves the redistribution of the flow injecting to the tube bundels. The good agreements of the numerical results with the experimental results of PIV measurements have been shown for the validation of the numerical methods adopted in the present papers.

  • Nowadays heat exchangers that have been applied for freon refrigerating systems, a shell and tube type condenser and a flooded evaporator have been used, but because of their large size, large space for installation and amount of refrigerants are needed. In this study, we will find the most suitable operating condition of shell and disk type optimum heat exchanger which can minimize the amount of a refrigerant and allow its minimum leakage. The condensing pressure of refrigeration system is increased from 15.0bar to 16.0bar and degree of superheat is increased from 0 to $10^{\circ}C$ at each condensing pressure. As a result of study, It revealed that shell and disk type heat exchanger was applicable to the freon refrigeration system

Numerical Study of Liquid Film Flow on Heat Exchanger Tube Arrangement and Configuration of Multi Effect Distillation (증발식 다중효용 담수기에서 열교환기 튜브 배열 및 형상에 따른 액막 유동에 관한 수치해석)

  • This study was performed numerical analysis in order to analyze liquid film flow of heat exchanger tube arrangement and configuration of evaporative multi effect distillation system using medium-temperature. Simulation was accomplished the two-dimensional calculations using commercial analyses program FLUENT based on the FVM(finite volume method). Fresh water generator of this study used Shell & Tubes heat exchanger with Cu_Ni tube, configuration of tube used bare tube and corrugated tube, and arrangement of tube used in-line array and staggered array. Performance of heat exchanger through the formation of liquid film was compared and analyzed. Liquid film flow occurred that falling on heat exchanger tube wall. Result of simulation showed that liquid film thickness of in-line arrangement was found 0.57mm with bare tube and 0.67mm with corrugated tube, respectively. And liquid film thickness of staggered arrangement was found 0.39mm with bare tubes and 0.62mm with corrugated tubes, respectively. Liquid film thickness of corrugated tube showed thicker than bare tube, but heat transfer rates of corrugated tube showed higher than bare tube. The reason was considered that surface area of corrugated tube was wider than bare tube. And liquid film thickness of staggered arrangement showed thinner than in-line arrangement, so thermal performance of staggered arrangement showed higher than in-line arrangement.

  • In many industrial processes and operations, such as power plants, petrochemical industries and ships, shell and tube heat exchangers are widely used and probably applicable for a wide range of operating temperatures. The main purpose of a heat exchanger is to transfer heat between two or more medium with temperature differences. Heat exchangers are highly nonlinear, time-varying and show time lag behavior during operation. The temperature control of such processes has been challenging for control engineers and a variety of forms of PID controllers have been proposed to guarantee better performance. In this paper, a scheme to control the outlet temperature of a shell and tube heat exchanger system that combines the PID controller with feedforward control and anti-windup techniques is presented. A genetic algorithm is used to tune the parameters of the PID controller with anti-windup and the feedforward controller by minimizing the IAE (Integral of Absolute Error). Simulation works are performed to study the performance of the proposed method when applied to the process.

  • In order to prepare for a future nuclear market, research for developing floating small modular reactor has been initiated with the aim of differentiating it from large nuclear power plants such as distributed power, heat supply to remote communities and sea water desalination. Depending on the characteristics of the small modular reactor, it is necessary to design a plate and shell heat exchanger that can be manufactured smaller than the U-tube recirculation method. In this study, 12 cases are selected by changing the diameter of the heat plate, the thickness of the device body and the size of the stiffener. Finite element analysis is performed by setting the stress classification lines for the point at which deformation is expected under external pressure conditions for these analysis cases. For the basic design of the plate and shell heat exchanger, the optimal conditions are derived by analyzing the tendency of stress change in the device body and stiffener.

  • Our lab designs a heat exchangers for air and carbondioxide gas. Coolant is water, thus it is very difficult to determine heat transfer parameters in this gas-liquid system. Repeated experiments gives overdesign value 35%, overall heat transfer coefficient $33.8(kcal/m2-hr-^{\circ}C)$ for carbondioxide. Another series of experiments determine overdesign 18.7%, overall heat transfer coefficient $21.4(kcal/m2-hr-^{\circ}C)$ for Air. These parameters are in same range of literature. Overdesign is increasing as tube length increases, also increases as wall thickness of heat exchanger increases. To get proper fluid linear velocity in heat exchanger, we change the diameter of tube and finally we can have optimum fluid linear velocity in the heat exchanger.

Development of a Single Phase Shell-and-Tube Type Heat Exchanger Thermal Design Code Based on Stream Analysis (유동해석에의한 단상용 원통다관형 열교환기 열설계 코드의 개발)

  • This shell-and-tube heat exchanger design code based on stream analysis method was developed to design accurate and advanced heat exchangers. Several geometry factors which affect the heat exchanger design was explained. Stream analysis method to calculate flow fraction of each stream and heat exchanger design flow chart was introduced. Performance of developed simulation code was compared with Delaware09, Delaware10, DongHwa and ANL experimental data. The statistical results of performance evaluation indicated that most data points are predicted within $\pm$30%. But the pressure loss was over predicted.

Effect of Impressed Potential on the SCC of Al-Brass (Al-황동의 응력부식균열 특성에 미치는 인가전위의 영향)

  • In general, the protection method of Shell and Tube Type heat exchanger for a vessel has been applied as a sacrificial anode, which is attached at the inner side of the shell. However, this is an insufficient protection method for tube. Therefore, a more suitable method, such as the impressed current cathodic protection for tube protection, is required. Al-brass is the raw material of tubes for heat exchanger of a vessel where seawater is used for cooling the water. It has a high level of heat conductivity, excellent mechanical properties, and a high level of corrosion resistance, due to a cuprous oxide (Cu$_2$O) layer against th seawater. However, in actuality, it has been reported that Al-brass tubes for heat exchanger of a vessel can produce local corrosion, such as stress corrosion cracking (SCC). This paper studied the effect of impressed potential on the stress corrosion cracking of Al-brass for impressed current cathodic protection in 3.5% NaCl +0.1% NH$_4$OH solution, under flow by a constant displacement tester. Based on the test results, the latent time of SCC, stress corrosion crack propagation, and the dezincification phase of Al-brass are investigated.
