  • The shell and tube-type heat exchangers have been frequently used in many industrial field because of its simple structure and wide operation conditions and so on. The purpose of this study is to investigate the flow characteristics in single shell of shell and tube-type heat exchanger according to velocity and temperature of hot air released from heat exchanger simulator through numerical analysis. As the results, the temperature was decreased in almost quadratic curve from top to bottom in single shell of the shell and tube-type heat exchanger. Further the changes of pressure and velocity in outlet according to change of inlet temperature were not observed. The cost for operating the shell and tube-type heat exchanger should be compared the supply cost of hot air with that of velocity in order to make a economic decision.

  • As we all know a large number of thin shell with the shape of E.P and H.P have been constructed. In this paper, we will be interested to the bending problem of thin translational shell. Two basic differential equations of shallow shell are to be used to derive approximate solution of it. Stress analysis of E.P. translational shell with constant thickness under uniform surface oad is to be given as an example. More exact solution formulated by K. Apeland can be found in the proceeding, Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, A.S.C.E., Feburary, 1961.

  • The AutoForm previously used the membrane element and it accomplished sheet metal forming analysis. The membrane analysis has been widely applied to various sheet metal forming processes because of its time effectiveness. However, it is well-known that the membrane analysis can not provide correct information for the processes which have considerable bending effects. In this research experimental results were compared with the analysis results obtained by using the shell element which is applied newly in the AutoForm commercial software. The shell element is a compromise element between continuum element and membrane element. The Finite element method by using shell element is the most efficient numerical method. From this research, it is known that FEA by using shell element can predict accurately the problems happened in actual experimental auto-body panel.

  • Themo-mechanical analysis was carried out using the finite element method for the steel shell of a cupola furnace. When the outer surface of the shell was cooled with water to within the temperature range of 35-80 ℃ during operation of the cupola, the inner surface of the shell was expected to exhibit a temperature of 65-248 ℃ based on heat transfer analysis. The shell was also expected to have an equivalent stress range of 100-280 MPa in the outer surface over the temperature range examined. Upon cooling the shell to obtain an outer surface temperature <80 ℃, the maximum equivalent stress of the shell did not exceed the yield strength. Although the temperature of the outer surface varied between 35 and 80 ℃ periodically due to the cooling control problem, the fatigue stress at the outer surface of the shell was calculated to be within the fatigue strength. During a non-operational period to examine the system between furnace operations, the thermal stress presented in the shell was sufficiently low to reach the desired yield strength and fatigue limit.

  • Free vibration analysis of plates and shells is carried out by using isogeometric approach. For this purpose, an isogeometric shell element based on Reissner-Mindlin (RM) shell theory is developed. Non-uniform rational B-spline surface (NURBS) definition is introduced to represent the geometry of shell and it is also used to derive all terms required in the isogeometric element formulation. New anchor positions are proposed to calculate the shell normal vector. Gauss integration rule is used for the formation of stiffness and mass matrices. The proposed shell element is then used to examine vibrational behaviours of plate and shell structures. From numerical results, it is found to be that reliable natural frequencies and associated mode shapes can be predicted by the present isogeometric RM shell element.

  • Plate and shell heat exchanger(P&SHE) has been applied to the refrigeration and air conditioning systems as evaporators or condensers fur their high efficiency and compactness. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of pressure drop in plate and shell heat exchanger. An experiment for single phase (low pressure drop in plate and shell heat exchanger was performed. Also numerical work was conducted using the FLUENT code for $ {\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. The dependence of friction factor on geometrical Parameters was numerically investigated. The study examines the internal flow and the pressure distribution in the channel of plate and shell heat exchanger. The results of CFD analysis compared with experimental data, and the difference of frictor factor in plate side and shell side are 10% and 12%, respectively. Therefore, the CFD analysis model is effectively predict the performance of plate and shell heat exchanger.

  • In a conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger, fluid contacts with tubes flowing up and down in a shell, therefore there is a defect in the heat transfer with tubes due to the stagnation portions . Fins are attached to the tubes in order to increase heat transfer efficiency, but there exists a limit. Therefore, it is necessary to improve heat exchanger performance by changing the fluid flow in the shell. In this study, a highly efficient shell-and-tube heat exchanger with spiral baffle plates is simulated three-dimensionally using a commercial thermal-fluid analysis code, CFX4.2. In this type of heat exchanger, fluid contacts with tubes flowing rotationally in the shell. It could improve heat exchanger performance considerably because stagnation portions in the shell could be removed. It is proved that the shell-and-tube heat exchanger with spiral baffle plates is superior to the conventional heat exchanger in terms of heat transfer.

  • A numerical approach combining the finite element method with two different stability criteria namely the Budiansky and the phase-plane buckling criteria is used to study the dynamic buckling phenomena of plate and shell structures subjected to sudden applied loading. In the finite element analysis an explicit time integration scheme is used and the two criteria are implemented in the Finite Element analysis. The dynamic responses of the plate and shell structures have been investigated for different values of the plate and shell imperfection factors. The results indicate that the dynamic buckling time, which is normally considered in predicting elasto-plastic buckling behavior, should be taken into consideration with the buckling criteria for elastic buckling analysis of plate and shell structures. By selecting proper control variables and incorporating them with two dynamic buckling criteria, the unique dynamic buckling load can be obtained and the problems of ambiguity and contradiction of dynamic buckling load of plate and shell structure can be resolved.

  • The theoretical method is developed to investigate the vibration characteristics of the combined cylindrical shells with an annular plate joined to the shell at any arbitrary axial position. The structural rotational coupling between shell and plate is simulated using the rotational artificial spring. For the translational coupling, the continuity conditions for the displacements of shell and plate are used. For the uncoupled annular plate, the transverse motion is considered and the in-plane motions are not. And the additional transverse and in-plane motions of the coupled annular plate by shell deformation are considered in analysis. Theoretical formulations are based on Love's thin shell theory. The frequency equation of the combined shell with an annular plate is derived using the Rayleigh-Ritz approach. The effect of inner-to-outer radius ratio, axial position and thickness of annular plate on vibration characteristics of combined cylindrical shells is studied. To demonstrate the validity of present theoretical method, the finite element analysis is performed.

  • The maximum speed and pressure distribution close to a warhead are altered based on the warhead shape, thereby resulting in changes to the flight distance and the destructive power. In this study, flow analysis was carried out based on the warhead shell shape. The maximum flow rate was detected at the side of shell, with a lower flow rate being found at the rear of the shell. In addition, the maximum pressure was detected at the warhead. It was also found that the reduction in the flow rate between the rear and the side of the shell in model A was smaller than that in model B. The obtained results are expected to be useful in the future design of shell warhead shape.
