Turbulent Drag Reduction Using the Sliding-Belt Device (미끄러지는 벨트 장치를 이용한 난류 항력 감소)

  • The sliding-belt concept introduced by Bechert et al. (AIAA J., Vol. 34, pp. 1072~1074) is numerically applied to a turbulent boundary layer flow for the skin-friction reduction. The sliding belt is moved by the shear force exerted on the exposed surface of the belt without other dynamic energy input. The boundary condition at the sliding belt is developed from the force balance. Direct numerical simulations are performed for a few cases of belt configuration. In the ideal case where the mechanical losses associated with the belt can be ignored, the belt velocity increases until the integration of the shear stress over the belt surface becomes zero, resulting in zero skin friction on the belt. From practical consideration of losses occurred In the belt device, a few different belt velocities are given to the sliding belt. It is found that the amount of drag reduction is proportional to the belt velocity.

  • Underwears treated by aroma capsule(UTA) have been known to have many advantages than normal underwears, for example, UTA has antimicrobial and deodorant properties. In this experiment, we examined antimicrobial and deodorant effect of UTA treated by rose and lemon fragrance, Mechanical properties of UTA including surface property, bending property and shear property were also tested. The results are as follows,1. The effects of antibacterial is estimated as 33% and the efficiency of deodouration is about 95 % in UTA. 2. The fragrance of UTA maintained even after 25 times washout. 3. Bending and shear properties were not changed in UTA However it decreased the coefficient of friction of the textures and the smooth surface was detected when the human skin was contacted.

  • During torsional fatigue of externally cracked cylindrical specimen, crack face rubbing may occur. At this time, normal contact forces arise when shear displacements cause the crack faces to be wedged open due to mismatch of the fracture surface asperities. These normal forces, in turn, generate friction force which act in opposition to the applied shear stresses and reduce the effective stress intensity factor. The premise of the proposed work is that friction and wedging can be studied by measuring the shear and normal displacement across the crack mouth. We have measured the crack mouth compliance using the new biaxial extensometer.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the horizontal shear strength on the interface between PC and cast-in-place concrete for PC composite beams. Six specimens were tested to examine the structural performance of the horizontal interface with different surface condition and stirrup detailing. Except for SF-291B specimen failed in flexural compression, strengths and deformation capacities of five specimens were determined by horizontal shear failure. Horizontal shear strengths by composite horizontal shear or shear friction in current codes could be used to predict the horizontal shear capacity of the interface for specimens. Also detailing for stirrup by PCI design provision could be used to accomplish the composite action in the interface.

Effect of slag and bentonite on shear strength parameters of sandy soil

  • A series of direct shear tests were implemented on three different types of specimens (i.e., clean Perth sand, sand containing 10, 20 and 30% bentonite, sand containing 1, 3 and 5% slag, and sand containing 10, 20 and 30% bentonite with increasing percentages of added slag (1%, 3% and 5%). This paper focuses on the shear stress characteristics of clean sand and sand mixtures. The samples were tested under different three normal stresses (100, 150 and 200 kPa) and three curing periods of no curing time, 7 and 14 days. It was observed that the shear stresses of clean sand and mixtures were increased with increasing normal stresses. In addition, the use of slag has improved the shear strength of the sand-slag mixtures; the shear stresses rose from 128.642 kPa in the clean sand at normal stress of 200 kPa to 146.89 kPa, 154 kPa and 161.14 kPa when sand was mixed with 1%, 3% and 5% slag respectively and tested at the same normal stress. Internal friction angle increased from $32.74^{\circ}$ in the clean sand to $34.87^{\circ}$, $37.12^{\circ}$ and $39.4^{\circ}$ when sand was mixed with 1%, 3% and 5% slag respectively and tested at 100, 150, and 200 kPa normal stresses. The cohesion of sand-bentonite mixtures increased from 3.34 kPa in 10% bentonite to 22.9 kPa, 70.6 kPa when sand was mixed with 20% and 30% bentonite respectively. All the mixtures of clean sand, different bentonite and slag contents showed different behaviour; some mixtures exhibited shear stress more than clean sand whereas others showed less than clean sand. The internal friction angle increased, and cohesion decreased with increasing curing time.

Scale Effects of the Specimen on Shear Strength of sand by Direct Shear Test (직접전단시험에 의한 모래의 전단강도에서 시편의 크기효과)

  • Purpose: An experimental study was conducted on the sand samples for the size effect of the test specimens, one of the problems of the direct shear test. Method: Jumunjin standard sand, a representative sand of Korea, was used as sand sample. The large direct shear test was performed to analyze the shear strength at 50%, 60%, 70%, and 80% relative density, and then the comparative results were compared with the test results of the small direct shear test. Result: It was analyzed that the internal friction angle of the small shear tester tended to be relatively large in the dense region. It was analyzed that the results of the large shear tester tend to be relatively large in the region of medium relative density. Conclusion: The size effect on the samples in the direct shear test on sandy soil was analyzed to be relatively small.

Experiments on Shear Connections of PSC Girders with Prefabricated Slabs

  • For the fast construction and replacement of bridges in urban area, a prefabricated bridge system can be an excellent alternative. Details of prefabricated slabs for PSC girders were developed and static tests on shear connections were conducted to propose design equations of the shear connection. Stirrups and stud connectors were used as shear connectors and non-shrink mortar was used for the filling material in shear pockets for shear connectors. Stirrups and studs were fabricated to insert embedded nut-type devices in PSC girders. Shear strength of the shear connection considering chemical bond, friction and mechanical connectors was evaluated and empirical equations were suggested. Due to the mechanical connectors, ultimate slip capacity of the shear connection was sufficient for shear load redistribution, and suggested details of the shear connection showed good performance in terms of strength and ductility.

  • In this study, slant shear tests for the prism specimens strengthened with ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC), normal- and high-strength concrete were performed to evaluate the interfacial shear strength between old and new concrete substrate. Test parameters are the roughness of surface, concrete strength, and fiber volume fraction of UHPFRC. The surface of the concrete was roughened by shot blasting. Test results showed that the adhesion bond resistance of the specimen with a roughened surface was very large compared to that of the specimen with a smooth surface. In addition, the interfacial shear strength appeared to be affected by the concrete strength rather than the fiber volume fraction. For the roughened surface by shot-blasting method, interfacial shear resistance exceeded the upper limit which is presented in current design codes even if the shear-friction reinforcements are not provided. Based on the test results, it is applicable to use the current concrete design codes to achieve the shear-friction design for the interface between conventional concrete and UHPFRC. However, for the surface which is not processed, it would be appropriate to provide additional shear-friction reinforcement.

Dynamic Friction Behavior of Interfaces Between Dense Dry Granular Soils and Construction Material(Concrete) (조밀한 건조조립토와 건설재료(콘크리트) 사이의 동마찰계수)

  • Shaking table tests to investigate the dynamic friction behavior of interfaces between dense dry granular soils and construction material(concrete) were performed and the results are reported. The results show the variation of dynamic interface friction coefficients between dense dry granular soils and construction material was small in the sliding velocity range employed in this study. It was also observed that dynamic interface friction coefficients decreased as mean grain sizes of granular soils increased. These coefficients were compared with the friction coefficients obtained from the peak internal friction angles of the same granular soils by plane strain compression tests.

Friction Stability of Materials with $ZrSiO_4$ Addition ($ZrSiO_4$가 첨가된 마찰재의 마찰 안정성)

  • This study was conducted to invent brake of non-steel material without using asbestos and disc pad added $ZrSiO_4$ was made. The physical properties and friction characteristics were investigated by varying methods. The physical properties were inspected of shear strength, hardness, heat expansion, specific gravity, % of gashole, thickness variation, weight variation and pH variation. The friction stability was measured by friction coefficient on variations of speed, temperature and deceleration condition. It was found that the physical properties were in general excellent. According to the friction characteristics tests, $ZrSiO_4$ had an abrasive property. As a results, the friction materials containing $ZrSiO_4$ 3~5vol% showed better resistance to fading and improved friction stability than the materials without ZrSiO$_4$.
