  • Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors already have been the focus for structural health monitoring (SHM) due to their distinguishing advantages. However, as bare optical fiber is very fragile, bare FBG strain sensor without encapsulation can not properly be applied in practical infrastructures. Therefore encapsulation techniques for making encapsulated FBG strain sensor show very important in pushing forward the application of FBG strain sensors in SHM. In this paper, a simplified approximate method to analyze the stress transferring rules for embedded FBG strain sensors in concrete monitoring is put forward according to mechanics of composite materials. Shear lag theory is applied to analyze the stress transferring rule of embedded FBG strain sensor in measured host material at the first time. The measured host objects (concrete) and the encapsulated FBG strain sensor are regarded as a composite, and then the stress transfer formula and stress transfer coefficient of encapsulated FBG strain sensor are obtained.

  • In this paper, hydraulic & thermal developing and fully developed laminar forced convection flow of a water-$Al_2O_3$ nanofluid in a circular horizontal tube with uniform heat flux at the wall, are investigated numerically. A single phase model employed with temperature independent properties. The thermal entrance length is presented in this paper. The variations of the convective heat transfer coefficient and shear stress are shown in the entrance region and fully developed region along different nanoparticles concentration and Reynolds numbers. Convective heat transfer coefficient for nanofluids is larger than that of the base fluid. It is shown that heat transfer is enhanced and shear stress is increased as the particle volume concentration increases. The heat transfer improves, as Reynolds number increases.

  • Cracks in concrete can submit shear forces by virtue of the roughness of their interfaces. With regard to this roughness, the crack faces play an important role. By transmitting normal and shear stress across their faces, shear cracks contribute to shear resistance. This process is called shear transfer or more generally, shear friction. Both experimental and analytical program to investigate shear transfer mechanism in normal and high strength concrete were included in this study. The parameters investigated in push-off test included the concrete strength, the presence and amounts of steel stirrups, and aggregate size. Solution procedure based on the truss model was developed to analyze the shear transfer behavior. In general, it can be seen that the analytical results agree well with results of shear transfer test.

  • In this study, the load transfer mechanism of tendon-grout interface of rock anchors has been examined through a series of static pull-out tests conducted on the model rock anchors constructed in the natural and artificial rock masses of granite and concrete, respectively. Several rock masses with horizontal discontinuities have been prepared to study the effects of weak planes on the shear stress distribution in tendon-grout interface. As a result, for the rock anchors constructed in the rock mass without discontinuities, stress concentration occurs on the upper part of the tendon-grout interface. On the contrary, as the frequency or the number of discontinuities increases, the shear stress distribution along the depth tends to be uniform. Also, an experimental equation about shear stress distribution between tendon-grout interface can be made by the regression of test results. The shear stresses computed from the experimental results between the rock surface and the depth of 2~3 times the tendon diameter are smaller than those from theory. Below the depth, the reverse can be observed.

  • Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) has a outstanding tensile hardening behaviour after a crack develops, which gives ductility to structures. Existing shear strength model for fiber reinforced concrete is entirely based on crack opening behavior(mode I) which comes from flexural-shear failure, not considering shear-slip behavior(mode II). To find out the mode I and mode II behavior on a crack in UHPFRC simultaneously, maximum shear strength of cracked UHPFRC is investigated from twenty-four push-off test results. The shear stress on a crack is derived as variable of initial crack width and fiber volume ratio. Test results show that shear slippage is proportional to crack opening, which leads to relationship between shear transfer strength and crack width. Based on the test results a hypothesis is proposed for the physical mechanics of shear transfer in UHPFRC by tensile hardening behavior in stead of aggregate interlocking in reinforced concrete. Shear transfer strength based on tensile hardening behavior in UHPFRC is suggested and this suggestion was verified by comparing direct tensile test results and push-off test results.

  • This study examined the effect of transverse reinforcement and compressive stress on the shear friction performance at the shear interface intersecting two structural elements with various concrete types. From the prepared 12 push-off test specimens, various characteristics at the interface were measured as follows: crack propagation, shear load-relative slip relationship, initial shear cracking strength, ultimate shear friction strength, and shear transfer capacity of transverse reinforcement. The configuration of transverse reinforcement and compressive strength of concrete insignificantly influenced the amount of relative slippage at the shear friction plane. With the increase of applied compressive stress, the shear friction capacity of concrete tended to increase proportionally, whereas the shear transfer capacity of transverse reinforcement decreased, which was insignificantly affected by the configuration type of transverse reinforcement. The empirical equations of AASHTO-LRFD and Mattock underestimate the shear friction strength of concrete, whereas Hwang and Yang model provides better reliability, indicating that the mean and standard deviation of the ratios between measured shear strengths and predictions are 1.02 and 0.23, respectively.

  • FBG Sensor, which is smaller than strain gauge and has better durability and does not have a noise from electromagnetic waves, was adapted to develope a smart anchor. A series of pullout tests were performed to verify the feasibility of smart anchor and find out the load transfer mechanism around the steel wire fixed to rock with grout. Distribution of shear stresses at steel wire-grout interface is assessed from the measured strain distribution by the optical fiber sensors and compared with stress distributions predicted by Farmer's and Aydan's formulas. It was found that present theoretical formulas may underestimate the failure depth and magnitude of shear stresses when the pullout loads increase.

  • Recently, most of residential-commercial buildings and apartment houses which are being constructed in the downtown area mainly adopt hybrid structural systems to compose various spaces. Especially, column-supported wall system which is one of the hybrid systems includes shear wall and rigid frame structure and these structures are connected by the transfer floor. But this system is very disadvantageous from the viewpoint of structural safety and is difficult to find out the stress distribution at the transfer floor. Therefore, this study analyzes the behavior and stress distribution according to the shear wall layout of transfer girder system subject to vertical and static lateral loads. Also, this study recognizes load paths and stress concentration based on the analysis results nearby the transfer floor and presents guidelines for the effective design of wall and transfer girder.

  • The conventional SLT(Shear Lag Theory) which has been proven that it can not provide sufficiently accurate strengthening predictions in elastic regime when the fiber aspect ratio is small. This paper is an extented work to improve it by modifying the load transfer mechanism called NSLT(New Shear Lag Theory), which takes into account the stress transfer across the fiber ends and the SCF(Stress Concentration Factor) that exists in the matrix regions near the fiber ends. The key point of the model development is to determine the major controlling factor among the material and geometrical coefficients. It is found that the most affecting factor is the fiber/matrix elastic modulus ratio. It is also found that the proposed model gives a good result that has the capability to correctly predict the elastic properties such as interfacial shear stresses and local stress variations in the small fiber aspect ratio regime.

  • The CFRP bar was used to achieve more ductile and durable headed-stud shear connectors in composite components. Three series of push-out tests were firstly conducted, including specimens reinforced with pure steel fibers, steel and CFRP bars. The distributed stress was measured by the commercial PPP-BOTDA (Pre-Pump-Pulse Brillouin optical time domain analysis) optical fiber sensor with high spatial resolution. A series of numerical analyses using non-linear FE models were also made to study the shear force transfer mechanism and crack response based on the test results. Test results show that the CFRP bar increases the shear strength and stiffness of the large diameter headed-stud shear connection, and it has equivalent reinforcing effects on the stud shear capacity as the commonly used steel bar. The embedded CFRP bar can also largely improve the shear force transfer mechanism and decrease the tensile stress in the transverse direction. The parametric study shows that low content steel fibers could delay the crack initiation of slab around the large diameter stud, and the CFRP bar with normal elastic modulus and the standard reinforcement ratio has good resistance to splitting crack growth in headed stud shear connectors.
