PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of tooth surface pre-treatment steps on shear bond strength, which is essential for understanding the adhesive cementation process. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Shear bond strengths of different cements with various tooth surface treatments (none, etching, priming, or etching and priming) on enamel and dentin of human teeth were measured using the Swiss shear test design. Three adhesives (Permaflo DC, Panavia F 2.0, and Panavia V5) and one self-adhesive cement (Panavia SA plus) were included in this study. The interface of the cement and the tooth surface with the different pre-treatments was analyzed using SEM. pH values of the cements and primers were measured. RESULTS. The highest bond strength values for all cements were achieved with etching and primer on enamel ($25.6{\pm}5.3-32.3{\pm}10.4MPa$). On dentin, etching and priming produced the highest bond strength values for all cements ($8.6{\pm}2.9-11.7{\pm}3.5MPa$) except for Panavia V5, which achieved significantly higher bond strengths when pre-treated with primer only ($15.3{\pm}4.1MPa$). Shear bond strength values were correlated with the micro-retentive surface topography of enamel and the tag length on dentin except for Panavia V5, which revealed the highest bond strength with primer application only without etching, resulting in short but sturdy tags. CONCLUSION. The highest bond strength can be achieved for Panavia F 2.0, Permaflo DC, and Panavia SA plus when the tooth substrate is previously etched and the respective primer is applied. The new cement Panavia V5 displayed low technique-sensitivity and attained significantly higher adhesion of all tested cements to dentin when only primer was applied.
Many researches on the application of stainless steels as structural steels have been performed thanks to their material properties such as superior ductility and corrosion resistance. Ferritic stainless steels(STS430) with little or no nickel have been used increasingly in building structure because it is inexpensive compared to austenitic stainless steels(STS304) with nickel, but provide performances similar to the austenitic stainless steel. This paper deals with block shear fracture behavior of base metal in stainless steel welded connection. Although the block shear fracture behavior for welded connection due to stress triaxiality is different from that of bolted connection, the block shear strength of welded connection in current design specifications has been predicted based on that of bolted connection. The main parameters are weld length and welding process(Arc and TIG welds). The ultimate strengths of TIG welded specimens were higher than those of arc welded specimens and current design predictions by AISC, EC3 etc. were compared with test strengths.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of the Compoglass Carvifil bonded on the dentin surface according to etching or non-etching and two time application or three time application of single component. Human non-carious 60 extracted 3rd molar were used. The occlusal dentin surfaces of all teeth were exposed with Diamond Wheel Saw and polished with Lapping & Polishing machine(South Bay Technology Co., U.S.A). The teeth were then distributed randomly into four groups of 15 teeth each and dentin surface were conditioned as following. Control group : Non-etching, two times application of Syntac Single Component. (According to manufacture's instruction) Experimental group 1 : Non-etching, three times application of Syntac Single Component. Experimental group : 2 Etching, two times application of Syntac Single Component. Experimental group 3 : Etching, three times application of Syntac Single Component. Compoglass were bonded to exposed dentin surfaces and all samples were placed in distilled water for 7 days. The shear bond strengths were measured by universal testing machine (SHIMADAZU AUTOGRAPH, AGS-4D., Japan). The results were as follows : 1. Experimental group 3 revealed the highest value (30.75${\pm}$4.74 MPa) and control group revealed the lowest value(14.85${\pm}$2.69 MPa). There was significant difference of shear bond strength among four groups(P<0.01) 2. The acid-etching groups (experimental group 2, 3) had higher shear bond strengths than non etching groups(control group and experimental group 1). 3. The additional application of Syntac single component groups revealed a higher bond strength than two times application groups (control group and experimental group 2).
Purpose: The aim of this research was to evaluate the influence of different surface treatments on the shear bond strength of zirconia ceramic to composite resin. Methods: Seventy two cylinder-shape (diameter: 5 mm; height: 12 mm) blocks of experimental industrially manufactured Y-TZP ceramic were abraded with $125{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$ particles and randomly divided into 4 groups. All the materials were categorized as group Gc(control group - composite resin veneering on zirconia surface), Gr - composite resin veneering after surface treatment of Rocatec system (3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) group; Gz - composite resin veneering after surface treatment of Zirconia primer (Z-primer, Bisco, U.S.A) group; Gm - composite resin veneering after surface treatment of zirconia primer (Monobond plus, ivoclar vivadent AG, Liechtenstein) group. Two different zirconia primers and Rocatec system were used to zirconia cylinders (n=16) onto the zirconia surface. Zirconia specimens, polished and roughened, were pretreated and composite bilayer cylinders bonded using conventional adhesive techniques. Results: Shear bond strengths were analyzed using single-factor ANOVA(p<0.05). Bond strength values achieved after airbone particle abrasion and zirconia surface pre-treatments(p<0.05). Conclusion: Shear bond strength tests denmonstrated that zirconia primer is a viable method to improved bond strength between zirconia ceramic core and veneering composites.

The strut-tie model approach has proven to be effective in the ultimate analysis and design of structural concrete with disturbed regions. For the reliable analysis and safe design of the structural concrete, however, the effective strengths of concrete struts must be determined accurately. In this study, the equations of the effective strengths of concrete struts, which are useful for the three types of determinate and indeterminate strut-tie models of reinforced concrete corbels, were proposed. The effects of shear span-to-effective depth ratio, the vertical-to-horizontal force ratio, and flexural and horizontal shear reinforcement ratios were reflected in the development of the proposed equations. To examine the appropriateness of the proposed and existing equations, the ultimate strengths of 243 reinforced concrete corbels tested to failure were evaluated by using the three types of corbel strut-tie models.

The purpose of this study was to asses the shear bond strengths of 3 types of light-curing Glass Ionomer cement to dental amalgam with or without an intermediary agent. 60 amalgam adherent specimens were prepared and aged in water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 3 days. Before bonding, the amalgam surfaces were finished flat on 600-grit silicon carbide paper. 30 specimens among 60 were used for bonding in this condition, and the other 30 were covered with a thin layer of light-curing intermediary agent. Shear bond strengths were measured with universal testing machine (Instron, Model 4301) and statistically processed by ANOVA and t-test. On completion of bond test, the fracture surfaces were examined under light microscope so that the mode of bond failure could be assessed The results were as follows : 1. Bond strength of Fuji II LC group showed the hightest value and was followed by Vitremer, Vitrebond groups (p<0.05). 2. The bond strengths achieved without an intermediary agent were higher than those obtained with intermediary agent (p<0.05). 3. For the specimens bonded with intermediary agent, bond failures occured mostly at the agent-amalgam interface. So, the use of intermediary bonding agent was thought not recommendable at glass ionomer-amalgam interface.
The purpose of this study was to assess comparatively the shear bond strength on dentin of four dentin bonding agents used in conjunction with light-curing composite resins. Clearfil New Bond, Scotchbond Multipurpose Dentin Adhesive, All-Bond 2 and X-R Bond were applicated on labial dentin surfaces just below dentin - enamel juction of bovine incisor teeth. After shear bond strength testing with the universal testing machine, the bonding interface of the specimens were observed under light stereomicroscope. Following results were obtained. 1. The shear bond strength was high in the order of B,C,D,A and group B Scotchbond Multipurpose Dentine Adhesive revealed greater bond strength than Clearfil New Bond and X-R Bond. (p<.001) 2. When using ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test, there were statistical differences among the four groups, except between group Band C,group D and A. 3. There was no relationship between mode of failure and shear bond strength.
The results of an experimental program regarding the effects of gradation on shear strength and volume change behavior of silty sands are presented. Consolidated drained direct shear tests were performed on two clean base sands and twelve silty sands obtained by mixing those base sands with two different non-plastic silts at various fines contents (${\leq}$ 25%). Drained shear strengths were observed to be not significantly influenced by either base sand gradation or silt gradation or fines content for the studied range. Increasing fines content has increased the volumetric contraction of specimens at similar void ratio. However, the amount of increase in volumetric contraction of silty sands were found to be affected by silt gradation when other influencing factors such as fines content, base sand gradation and mineralogy were kept the same. Moreover, the amount of increase in volumetric contraction of silty sands were also found to be affected by base sand gradation when other influencing factors such as fines content, silt gradation and mineralogy were kept the same.

The shear behavior and strength of simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams with web opening subject to concentrated loads have been investigated experimentally on the effects of structural parameters such as location of web opening and reinforcements. A total of 12 specimens were tested at the laboratory under two-point top loading. The shear span-to-depth ratio was taken constantly 0.8, and various types of reinforcements based on truss models were adopted. In the tests, the effects of location, reinforcements of web openings on the shear behavior, and crack initiation and propagation have been carefully checked and analyzed. The test results have been compared with the formulas proposed currently being used and analyzed by nonlinear finite element method. Shear strengths obtained from the tests showed good matches with Kong and Ray's equation, and also with the results calculated by nonlinear finite element method.

This paper presents a deformable strut-and-tie model of determining the shear strengths and ultimate deformations of the shear-dominant reinforced concrete members. The proposed model originates from the strut-and-tie model concept and satisfies equilibrium, compatibility, constitutive laws, and the geometric conditions of shear deformation. This study attempts to apply deformation patterns to strut-and-tie models. The yielding of flexural reinforcements determines yielding states and the ultimate states of reinforced concrete coupling beam are defined as the ultimate compressive strain of struts and the degradation of compressive strength due to principal tensile strain of struts. The validity and accuracy of the proposed model is then tested against available experimental data. The parameters reviewed include the ratios of truss action and arch action, the reinforcement ratios, and the shear span-depth ratio. It is expected that this model can be applied to displacement-based design methods.
