A new simple and practical strut-and-tie model (STM) for predicting the shear strength of RC pile caps is proposed in this paper. Two approaches are adopted to take into account the concrete softening effect. In the first approach, a concrete efficiency factor based on compression field theory is employed to determine the effective strength of a concrete strut, assumed to control the shear strength of the whole member. The second adopted Kupfer and Gerstle's biaxial failure criterion of concrete to derive the simple nominal shear strength of pile caps containing the interaction between strut and tie capacity. The validation of these two methods is investigated using 110 RC pile cap test results and other STMs available in the literature. It was found that the failure criterion approach appears to provide more accurate and consistent predictions, and hence is chosen to be the proposed STM. Finally, the predictions of the proposed STM are also compared with those obtained by using seven other STMs from codes of practice and the literature, and were found to give better accuracy and consistency.

In case of an urban tunnel, the displacement of ground base controls the tunnel design because it is built on shallow and unconsolidated ground many times. There are more insufficiency to describe the ground movement which coincides in the measured result of the situ because the design of an urban tunnel is dependent on the method of numerical analysis used to the existing elastic and elasto-plastic models. We studied about the predict ion for the ground movement of a shallow tunnel in unconsolidated ground, mechanism of collapse, and settlement. Also this paper shows comparison with the existing elastic and elasto-plastic model using the unlinear analysis of the strain-softening model. We can model the real ground movement as the increasement of ground surface inclination or occurrence of shear band by using strain-softening model for the result of ground movement of an urban NATM tunnel.
When an earth pressure balance (EPB) shield machine bores a tunnel in gravelly sand stratum, the excavated natural soil is normally transformed using foam and water to reduce cutter wear and the risk of direct muck squeezing out of the screw conveyor (i.e., muck spewing). Understanding the undrained shear behavior of conditioned soils under pressure is a potential perspective for optimizing the earth pressure balance shield tunnelling strategies. Owing to the unconventional properties of conditioned soil, a pressurized vane shear apparatus was utilized to investigate the undrained shear behavior of foam-conditioned gravelly sands under normal pressure. The results showed that the shear stress-displacement curves exhibited strain-softening behavior only when the initial void ratio (e0) of the foam-conditioned sand was less than the maximum void ratio (emax) of the unconditioned sand. The peak and residual strength increased with an increase in normal pressure and a decrease in foam injection ratio. A unique relation between the void ratio and the shear strength in the residual stage was observed in the e-ln(τ) space. When e0 was greater than emax, the fluid-like specimens had quite low strengths. Besides, the stick-slip behavior, characterized by the variation coefficient of measured shear stress in the residual stage, was more evident under lower pressure but it appeared to be independent of the foam injection. A comparison between the results of pressurized vane shear tests and those of slump tests indicated that the slump test has its limitations to characterize the chamber muck fluidity and build the optimal conditioning parameters.
To achieve a wide suction range, the low suction was imposed on compacted silt specimens by the axis translation technique and the high suction was imposed by the vapor equilibrium technique with saturated salt solutions. Firstly, the results of soil water retention tests on compacted silt show that the soil water retention curves in terms of gravimetric water content versus suction relation are independent of the dry density or void ratio in a high suction range. Therefore, triaxial tests on compacted silt with constant water content at high suctions can be considered as that with constant suction. Secondly, the results of triaxial shear tests on unsaturated compacted silt with the initial void ratio of about 0.75 show a strain-hardening behavior with a slightly shear contraction and then strain-softening behavior with an obviously dilation. As the imposed suction increases, the shear strength increases up to a peak value and then decreases when the suction is beyond a special value corresponding to the peak shear strength. The residual strength increases to fair value and those at high suctions are almost independent of imposed suctions. In addition, the contribution of suction to the strength of compacted silt would not diminish even in a high suction range.

Two different types of shear-friction tests were classified by external loadings and referred to as a push-off and a pull-off test. In a pull-off test, a tension force is applied in the transverse direction of the test specimen to produce a shear stress at the shear plane. This paper presents a method to evaluate shear transfer strengths of uncracked pull-off specimens. The method is based on the compression field theory and different constitutive laws are applied in some ways to gain accurate shear strengths considering softening effects of concrete struts based on Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT) and Softened Truss Model (STM). The validity of the proposed method is examined by applying to some selected test specimens in literatures and results are compared with the predicted values. A general agreement is observed between predicted and measured values at ultimate loading stages in initially uncracked pull-off test specimens. A shear strength evaluation formula considering the effective compressive strength of a concrete strut was proposed, and the applicability of the proposed formula was verified by comparing with the experimental results in the literature.

An analytical model which can simulate the post-cracking behavior of reinforced concrete structures subjected to in-plane shear and normal stresses is presented. Based on the force equilibriums, compatibility conditions, and bond stress-slip relationship between steel and concrete, a criterion to simulate consider the tension-stiffening effect is proposed. The material behavior of concrete is described by an orthotropic constitutive model, and focused on the tension-compression region with tension-stiffening and compression softening effects defining equivalent uniaxial relations in the axes of orthotropy. Correlation studies between analytical results and available experimental data are conducted with the objective to establish the validity of the proposed model.

This paper presents an equation for balanced-steel ratio in longitudinal and transverse direction throughout analysis based on a space truss model introducing the concept of concrete softening effect. This paper also presents as equation for postcracking torisonal stiffness throughout analysis considering the equilibrium conditions and compatibility conditions based on shear panel. Correlation between predicted postcracking torsional stiffness, and experimental results was good, not only for beams tested in this paper but also for others in the literature.

Samples of the aluminum alloy 3103 sheets were repeatedly deformed by ECAR up to twelve passes. Shear textures developed after the first passage of ECAR. However, the intensity of shear texture components decreased with increasing number of ECAR passages. Observations by TEM and EBSD revealed that the degree of misorientations within the deformed grains increased with increasing number of ECAR passes. Changes in textures and microstructures were hardly observed during recrystallization anneal. Upon subsequent annealing, the samples deformed by a large number of ECAR passes displayed a continuous grain growth. A higher deformation by ECAR resulted in a slower softening, which reflects the stability of ultra-fine grains against the grain growth.
This study examines the wave propagation of the functionally graded polymer composite (FG-PC) nanoplates reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) resting on elastic foundations in the framework of the nonlocal strain gradient theory incorporating both stiffness hardening and softening mechanisms of nanostructures. To this end, the material properties are based on the Halpin-Tsai model, and the expressions for the classical and higher-order stresses and strains are consistently derived employing the second-order shear deformation theory. The equations of motion are then consistently derived using Hamilton's principle of variation. These governing equations are solved with the help of Trial function method. Extensive numerical discussions are conducted for wave propagation of the nanoplates and the influences of different parameters, such as the nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, weight fraction of GNPs, uniform and non-uniform distributions of GNPs, elastic foundation parameters as well as wave number.
