  • End-milling have been used in the industrial world because it is very effective to the manufacture of mechanical parts with various shape. Recently the end-milling processing is needed the high-precise technique with good surface roughness and rapid time in aircraft, automobile part and molding industry. Therefore this study carried to decide the optimum cutting condition for surface roughness and rapid manufacturing time using design of experiment and ANOVA. From the results of experimentation, surface roughness have an effect on cutting direction, spindle speed and depth of cut. And then the optimum condition used Taguchi design is upward cutting in cutting direction, 600rpm in spindle speed, 240mm/min feed rate, 2mm in axial depth of cut and 0.25mm radial depth of cut. By using design of experiment, it is effectively represented shape characteristics of working surface in end-milling.

  • This paper presents the structural analysis and optimum design of a vertical micro-gyroscope with decoupled 2 degrees of freedom (DOF), driven by electrostatic force. Simplified beam models were presented to derive the structural stiffness of the driving spring of the U shape and the sensing spring of I shape. A finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to validate each derivation. A total mass and a polar mass moment of inertia were also obtained and used in calculating the resonance frequency at each mode of the 2 DOF. The resonance frequencies of the total system were calculated using the proposed models and it has been found that they were in excellent agreement with those of the FEA. Finally, the developed analysis program was then linked to an optimum design module, and an optimum design of the micro-gyroscope was successfully performed.

  • Recently, the weight reduction of vehicle influences its environment problems and performances. It is a trend that a lot of parts have been currently changed to an aluminum alloy from steel materials. In this study, the shape optimization using an orthogonal array is performed to determine the design of the knuckle which is a part of suspension system. With the material of the weight reduction was achieved by satisfying the constraints of a strength requirement. The orthogonal array of $L_{18}$ is introduced to find the optimum design variables that considers the shape of the knuckle. The characteristic function composed of the objective and the construct is defined to the feasibility. Comparing to the weight of the initial design with steel materials that of optimum design with aluminum alloy material is reduced by 60%.

  • A two-step method is presented for the optimum design of trusses with available sections under stress and Euler buckling constraints. The shape design of the truss is used as a means to convert the discrete solution into a continuous one. In the first step of the method, a continuous solution is obtained by sizing and shape design using an approximate polynomial expression for the buckling coefficients. In the second step, the member sizes obtained are changed to the nearest available sections and the truss is reconfigured by using the exact values for the buckling coefficients. The optimizer used is based on the sequential quadratic programming and the gradients are evaluated in closed form. The method is illustrated by two numerical examples.

  • The Shape optimization makes it possible to reduce the weight of structure and cost then member sizing optimization. A vast amount of imprecise information is existed in constraints of the optimum design. It is very difficult and sometimes confusing to describe and to deal with the several criteria which contain fuzzy degrees of relatives importance. This paper proposed weighting strategies in the multiobjective shape optimization of fuzzy structural system by ${\alpha}$-cut approach. The algorithm in this research is numerically tested for 2-bar truss structure. The result show that. the user can choose the one optimum solution in practices as obtaining the optimum solutions according to the ${\alpha}$-cut approach, weight of volume and displacement.

  • This paper describes design method of Passive-type Radar Reflector (PRR) which is to provide the requirement of newly revised 2000 SOLAS regulations on the Radar Reflector. The main target of this work is to find the optimum shape of a radar target having large Radar Cross Section (RCS). Through the RCS analysis based on the theoretical approach, two kinds of PRR models, RRR-F model for use in fisheries and PRR-S model for use in small sized ship, are designed and discussed their RCS performance. RCS measurement tests for the various sized samples are carried out in an anechoic chamber. As evaluation results it was clearly shown that the conventional sphere-type shows optimum shape in case of PRR-S, while the cylinder-type which consists of large sized corner clusters or zig-zag flat plats gives best performance in case of PRR-F.

  • The purpose of this paper was to develop size & shape optimization programming algorithm of plane trusses. The optimum techniques applied in this study were extended penalty method of Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Techniques(SUMT) and direct search method with multi-variables proposed by Hooke & Jeeves. Upper mentioned two methods were used iteratively at each level of size and shape optimization routines. The design variables of size optimization were circular steel tube(structural member) diameter and thickness, those of shape optimization were joint coordinates, and the objective function was represented as total weight of truss. During the optimum design, two level procedures of size and shape optimization were interacted iteratively until the final optimum values were attained. At the previous studies about shape optimization of truss, the member sectional areas and coordinates were applied as design variables. So that they could not apply the buckling effect of compression member. In this paper, actual sizes of member and nodal coordinates are used as design variables to consider the buckling effect of compression member properly.

  • This study presents the topology optimization technique by density method to determine the initial shape of space truss structures. Most initial shape design is performed by designer's previous experiences and trial and error method instead of the application of reasonable optimization method. Thus, the reasonable and economical optimization methods are needed to be introduced for the initial shape design. Therefore, we set design domain for cantilever space truss structure as an example model. And topology optimization is used to obtain optimum layout for them, and then size optimization method is used to find the optimum member size. Therefore, the reasonable initial optimal shapes of spatial truss structures can be obtained through the topology and size optimization using density method.

  • The shape optimization procedure applying finite element method was carried out for the specific purpose of analysis of a tractor chassis frame. Minimization of the mass as an objective function is executed under multiple constrained conditions of nodal displacements and stresses. The optimization process executions were succeeded in converging into single optimum solution. Although mass reduction and stress alleviation were attained by 40% and 26 to 24% respectively , the geometry of the shape is so complicated for fabrication that the refinement of the geometry is of necessity.

  • In this paper, the optimum design of the glass net shape was studied to minimize the electric field of mold transformer. The glass net is used for reinforcement in structure between coils and epoxy, but it can cause to increase the electric field and the partial discharge. Therefore, the optimum design of glass net is required to minimize the electric field. In this paper, the objective function was approximated by using response surface method and then Zoom-in method was used for optimal design to minimize the electric field. The electric field was analysed using finite element method for each shape of glass nets.
