The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of education for prevention of child sexual abuse (rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment etc.) of children in elementary school students. Incidences of sexual abuse in Korea is ranked 3rd in the world. Sexual abuse of children, particularly, is one of the most serious crimes that affect both the victimized children and their family. The issue related to sexual abuse of children has been ignored, and there is a lack of systematic education to prevent sexual abuse of children either for children or their parents. Furthermore, lack of knowledge and poor attitude of teachers limit their capability to provide education for sexual abuse prevention to the children. The education for teachers may change their knowledge of the sexual abuse and their attitude toward it and improve their capability in helping children. 223 Korean elementary school students participated in this study. Research design was One group pretest-posttest design. The education given to the subjects included 4 hours through the multimedia CD-ROM on the prevention of child sexual abuse. The education program was developed based on a survey. School- aged- children, parents, and teachers were interviewed to reveal their educational needs based on their experiences related to sexual abuse. This program includes such as safety education, crisis management, resource person(s), and phone numbers of available hospital. Data was collected before, during and after the education was given to the subjects, to assess their knowledge and attitude toward child sexual abuse. Two instruments were used in this study. Using Cronbach's ALPHA validity and reliability of 2 instruments were tested. The analysis of the data was done with Window SPSS 10.0 for descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. The results of this analysis were as follows : 1. After education, the score of school nurses knowledge was higher than before(t= -4.677, p=0.000). 2. After education, the score of school nurses attitude was not higher than before (t=0.131, p=0.896). The findings from this study will provide an intervention strategy for prevention of sexual abuse in children.

Purpose: This study was done to provide basic data for sexual abuse prevention programs for elementary school students by comparing stated needs of the students and teachers. Methods: The participants were 4th, 5th, and 6th grade elementary school students and elementary school teachers. Data from questionnaires completed by 1,372 students and 162 teachers were analyzed. Results: 1) The mean scores for felt need for sexual abuse prevention education was relatively high in both of the elementary school student and teacher groups but there was a significant difference between the two groups (t=15.28, p<.001). 2) In the elementary school students, there was a significant difference in the degree of need for sexual abuse prevention education according to father's educational level (t=2.89, p=.004), experience of sexual education (t=3.11, p=.006), and recognition of the necessity of sexual abuse education (t=7.56, p<.001). 3) In the elementary school teachers, there was no significant difference in the degree of need for sexual abuse prevention education according to the participants' socio-demographic and sexual abuse prevention education related characteristics. Conclusion: When planning educational programs on child sexual abuse prevention, needs of the elementary school students should be considered. Then, the educational program at school would be more effective.

Furthermore, lack of knowledge and poor attitude of teachers limit their capability to provide education for sexual abuse prevention to the children. The education for kindergarten teachers may change their knowledge of the sexual abuse and their attitude toward it and improve their capability in helping children. 114 Korean kindergarten teachers participated in this study. Research design was one group pretest-posttest design. The education given to the subjects included 2 hours of lecture. The education program was developed based on a survey. Preschool-aged-children, parents, and teachers were interviewed to reveal their educational needs based on their experiences related to sexual abuse. The results of this analysis were as follows : 1. After education, the score of kindergarten teachers knowledge was higher than before (t=-4.409, p=0.002). 2. After education, the score of kindergarten teachers attitude was higher than before (t=3.065, p=0.003). The findings from this study will provide an intervention strategy for prevention of sexual abuse in children.
The present study assessed children's perceptions of risk of sexual abuse before and after participation in a sexual abuse prevention program, and investigated the effects of the sexual abuse prevention program on the children's emotional response. The subjects for this study were 135 3rd and 145 6th graders, attending elementary school in Seoul. Instruments were the Sexual Abuse Situational Risk (Jacobs, Hashima, & Kenning, 1995) and the Children's Emotional Response Questionnaire (Garbarino, 1987). The results of this study were that (1) children's perceptions of the risk of sexual abuse by a stranger decreased, relative to those by familiar persons which increased after the program. Especially, 6th graders had higher perceptions of the likelihood of abuse by familiar persons than 3rd graders. Girls had higher perceptions of risk than boys. (2) Children perceived adults as more dangerous than adolescents both before-and after-program. (3) Children's perceptions of the risk of sexual abuse in public settings decreased, relative to perceptions of risk in private settings which increased after the program. Girls had higher perceptions of the liklihood of abuse in private settings than boys; no significant difference was found by grade. (4) Children's emotional response did not reveal a significant change between pretest and posttests.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of teaching personal safety skills for prevention of potential child sexual abuse in Korean society. The subjects of this study were 80 first grade female students, sampled from elementary schools in Seoul. The instruments of this study were the Personal Safety Questionnaire (PSQ) and 'What if' Situations Test (WIST) modified by the present researcher. The t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were applied to analyze the data of this study. The results of the analysis were (1) after the Behavioral Skills Training, the children of the training group showed a higher level of knowledge about child sexual abuse than the control group. (2) After the Behavioral Skills Training, the children of the training group showed more adequate self-defensive skills than the control group when they faced situations of possible child sexual abuse. (3) The higher the level of knowledge about child sexual abuse, the more adequate self-defensive skills in situations of child sexual abuse. These results supported the effectiveness of Behavioral Skills Training as preventive education on potential child sexual abuse.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review sexual abuse prevention education program for Korean elementary school students. Methods: Whittemore and Knafl's integrative review methods were used and Gough's weight of evidence was employed as a quality appraisal tool. Articles published in Korean or English were identified through electronic search engines and scholarly web sites using three keywords: "elementary school student", "sexual abuse", and "prevention education". Peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2018 were included in this review. Results: Twelve articles met the inclusion criteria and were appraised as being high-quality. Among the 12 selected studies, seven were descriptive, while five were intervention studies. Sexual abuse prevention education programs were effective in improving perceptions, knowledge, attitudes, and preventive behaviors among elementary school students. However, deficiencies were found in the variety of educational methods, utilization of experts, and standardization of the content of sexual abuse prevention education. Conclusion: We need to provide various educational methods that are appropriate for specific developmental stages, and the sexual abuse prevention content should draw upon the current sexual education program administered to this population. Furthermore, parents and trained teachers or school health teachers should be included to provide effective education programs for elementary students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a sexual abuse prevention education program for elementary school students. Methods: Orem's Self-Care Theory (1995) and Seels & Richey's ADDIE model (1994) for developing learning materials were applied to develop this program Results: The development progress of the program consisted of 5 distinct phases: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The contents was classified into 6 categories: the definition of sexual abuse, how to deal with sexual abuse, the situational reaction, areas with a high risk for sexual abuse, related organizations, and a wrap-up quiz. The app was easily accessible for elementary school students. Conclusion: A sexual abuse prevention program using a hybrid app may be an effective way to reach elementary students, and further research for children of various ages is required.
