  • Reduced thickness of the water pipes due to corrosion makes it difficult to perform the original functions since corrosion in metallic water pipes can occur over time. In this study, reliability model that can estimate the probability of pipe breakage is developed regarding corrosion depth increment according to service year. Probability of pipe breakage was calculated by FORM(First Order Reliability Method) and unsteady analysis was performed to analyze the statistical properties of water pressure. And KCIP(Korea Cast Iron Pipe) equation was adopted for the reliability function. Furthermore, change of pipe thickness was estimated by Nahal and Khelif equation and Romanoff equation. Therefore, pipe thickness was calculated due to change of corrosion depth and probability of pipe breakage was calculated and compared with 10, 20, 30 service years. From the results, probability of pipe breakage for network A is gradually increased from 6.8% to 8.6% according to service year of 10, 20, 30 when Nahal and Khelif equation is applied. And probability of pipe breakage for network A is also gradually increased from 6.4% to 8.9% according to service year of 10, 20, 30 when Romanoff equation is applied.

  • For the asset management of a water pipe network, it would be necessary to understand the extent of the maintenance cost required for the water pipe network for the future. This study would develop a method to draw the optimum cost required for the maintenance of the water pipe network in waterworks facilities to maintain the aim revenue water ratio and to achieve the target revenue water ratio, considering the water service providers' waterworks condition and revenue water ratio comprehensively. This study conducted a survey with 96 water service providers as of the early 2015 and developed models to estimate the optimum maintenance cost of the water pipe network, considering the characteristics of the water service providers. Since the correlation coefficient of all the developed models was higher than 0.95, it turned out that it had significant reliability, which was statistically significant. As a result of applying the developed models to the actual water service providers, it was drawn that increasing revenue water ratio to more than a certain level can reduce the maintenance cost of the water pipe network by a great deal. In other words, it is judged that it would be the most efficient to secure the reliability of waterworks management by increasing the short-term revenue water ratio to more than a certain level and gradually increase the revenue water ratio from the long-term perspective. It is expected that the proposed methodology proposed in this study and the results of the study will be used as a basic research for planning the maintenance of water pipe network or establishing a plan for waterworks facilities asset management.

  • In this paper a method for estimating the 'service life' and 'residual life' of a water pipe based on the Water Pipe Network Performance Evaluation(WPNPE) results of Water Supply Technical Diagnosis was developed for efficient maintenance of water pipes. The residual life of a pipe was defined as the difference between the service life and elapsed time since installation. The service life was defined as the time when a pipe reaches the reference score for determining deteriorated pipes that was used in the WPNPE. The pipe evaluation criteria and deterioration scores used in the WPNPE for the case study area were considered as independent variables in the multiple regression model for estimating the service life and residual life of the pipes in the area. To estimate the service life for the pipes the reference scores for determining deteriorated pipes were used as the values of the variables that represent the deterioration scores in the constructed regression models. Subsequently, the statistics of the service life and residual life of the pipes in the case study area were presented and analyzed in comparison with the service life defined by the Local Public Enterprizes Act.

  • It has been a challenge for researchers to accurately measure high temperature creep strain online without damaging the mechanical properties of the pipe surface. To this end, a noncontact method for measuring high temperature strain of a main steam pipe based on digital image correlation was proposed, and a system for monitoring of high temperature strain was designed and developed. Wavelet thresholding was used for denoising measurement data. The sub-pixel displacement search algorithm with curved surface fitting was improved to increase measurement accuracy. A field test was carried out to investigate the designed monitoring system of high temperature strain. The measuring error was less than $0.4ppm/^{\circ}C$, which meets actual measurement requirements for engineering. Our findings provide a new way to monitor creep damage of the main steam pipe of a boiler of an ultra-supercritical power plant in service.

  • Dynamic characteristics of water hammer arresters installed in a building water supply system have been investigated numerically by utilizing a commercial code that employs the method of characteristics. Some preliminary results with those arrester models produced in this study agree well with the previously reported. Then, the arrester models have been incorporated into a water supply pipe system of a 59 $m^2$apartment unit constructed by a leading construction company, and their dynamic characteristics have been investigated, especially on the reduction in the water hammer pressure. It is found that the setting of the arresters in the pipe system, which is recommended by the company, may not be proper for reducing the pressure down below 1,082.0 kPa (10.0 kg$g_f$/$cm^2$) when quick-closure valves in the pipe system are closed within 30 ms at the static pressure of 542.6 kPa (4.5 kg$g_f$/$cm^2$). More arresters in the system may be required to meet pressure criteria stated on the related standards and codes.

  • Components in thermal power plants are subjected to service conditions under which creep damages take place causing material exhaustion. Comprehensive creep damage investigations have been performed on a 0.5Cr0.5Mo0.25V pipe bend which had been taken out of service after 117,603h and 501 start-ups because of severe cracks. The propagation of creep damage in a long term exposed pipe bend has been analysed by the replication, Indentation and hardness tests. Also, Calculation of creep lifetime has been investigated in order to verify actual lifetime of a damaged pipe bend. By measuring diametrical expansion, Accumulated creep strain and creep strain rate were calculated. Calculated results of creep lifetime on the Larson-Miller Parameter method are good agreement with actual service-exposed hour.

  • In this study, Hazen-Williams C value of pipes in wide waterworks system was estimated and statistically analyzed. Hazen-Williams C value of water pipe was predicted after 20 years of service period. From the results, it was found that C value of water pipe for treated water maintained higher value of 110 after 20 years of installation. Furthermore, it was found that velocity coefficients of steel pipe for less than and more than 20 years of installation were 117.7 and 109.3, respectively. C value of ductile iron pipe for less than and more than 20 years of installation were 118.1 and 114.2, respectively. In this study, it was also found that small value of C is used in the design of water pipe system. Therefore, excessively bigger size of pipe can be determined in the design of water pipe system. From the results of present study, optimum value of C can be used to avoid the oversized design of water pipe system.

  • Although stable and safe drinking water supply to the customers is a basic function of multi-regional water supply systems in Korea, most systems have their vulnerabilities in emergency time due to the branch-type. Application of connections from the other water supply system can provide a solutions for these tentative problems. This paper describes reduction planning of water supply accidents that can minimize a service interruption to customers in multi-regional water supply system by connecting pipe lines between local water supply systems in Mokpo city areas. The result of this study shows that Juam dam multi-regional water supply systems can cover all of the water shortage in southern parts of Jeonnam multi-regional water supply systems by transmitting water through connected pipes between local networks. This can be effective to supply water interactively in various contingencies, when a pipe line accident occurs in southern area of Jeonnam multi-regional water supply systems. On the contrary, southern area of Jeonnam multi-regional water supply systems can cover 99.5 %($62,500m^3/day$) of the water shortage of Juam dam multi-regional water supply systems when service interruptions caused by various pipe accidents occur in the system.

  • High pressure steam pipe in power plants is subjected to service conditions under which creep processes take place limiting the component's lifetime. To ensure a safe and economic operation it is necessary to get accurate information about the lifetime situation of single components as well as of the whole system. Careful evaluation is combined with FEM analysis, NDT, microstructure evaluation. Especially, 14MoV63 steel is used as material for main steam pipe for 30 years old power plants. In service inspections have shown an increasing number of cracks and creep cavities beside stress concentration parts. A detailed analysis came to the conclusion that lifetime has been consumed to a high degree, 80%level.
