  • A component-scale two-phase analysis code has been developed for a realistic simulation of two-phase flow transients in a light water nuclear reactor component. In the code, a two-fluid three-field model is adopted and the governing equations are solved on an unstructured mesh. For the numerical solution scheme, the semi-implicit method used in the RELAP5 code was selected, which has been proved to be very stable and accurate for most of practical applications. However, some modifications were needed for its application to an unstructured non-staggered grid. This paper presents the modified semi-implicit numerical method for unstructured grid and the preliminary results of the calculations.

  • Magneto-Rheological (MR) dampers are being used increasingly because of their adaptability to control algorithms and reliability of passive systems. In this paper, an extensive investigation on performance of MR dampers in semi-active and passive modes has been carried out. It is observed that the overall energy dissipation by MR dampers in passive-on modes is higher than that in semi-active modes for most of the competitive semi-active controllers. Based on the energy dissipation pattern, a novel semi-active controller, termed as "Simple Passive Semi-Active Controller", has been proposed for MR dampers. This controller can be emulated by a simple passive hardware proposed in this paper. The proposed concept of controller "hardware emulation" is innovative and can also be implemented for other semi-active devices for control algorithms of certain form. The effectiveness and reliability of the proposed controller has been investigated extensively through numerical simulations. It has been demonstrated that the proposed controller is competitive to or more effective than other widely used / investigated semi-active controllers.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze daylighting performance in a semi-infinite size office space for lighting energy conservation. DOE2.1E was used for simulations for the model space of $12\times12\times2.6m$. Nomographs were developed which could simulate work plane illuminance, glare index, energy consumption rate and energy reduction rate for daylighting design. Major results of simulations are as follows ; 1) When blinds facing south were installed, 43% of workplane illuminance diminished, but the flare index didn't exceed the recommended max-glare value. 2) In a semi-infinite office space facing south. energy consumption rate in the case space of 500 lux workplane illuminance is larger then case space of 300 lux workplane illuminance. Therefore, energy reduction rate is increased when the semi-infinite office faces south and naintains 300 lux workplane illuminance level.

  • Transportation energy saving is a national concern because all national petroleum energy is imported. A number of intersections are operating as semi-protected intersections, which have left-turn signal but not exclusive left-turn lanes, because of limited roadways in urban areas. Since the traffic signal methods for the intersections having left-turn signal/lanes cannot be applied to the semi-protected intersection, it is needed to develop a new technique. The purpose of this study was to develop a traffic signal timing method at semi-protected intersections for energy saving and to computerize the method for the practical use. A probability model which could estimate left-turn utilization factors of through traffic during green signal was developed based on field studies. Employing the factors, macro-models to estimate vehicular average delay and proportions of vehicles stopped at the semiprotected intersections were developed. The calculated values of the delay model agreed well with the simulated values of a simulation model using SLAM Ⅱ, a simulation language. Using the two models and the idling fuel consumption rate and the excess fuel consumption per stop-go speed change of vehicles. a traffic signal timing method at semi-protected intersections for energy saving was developed and computerized. The method can be used for other measures of effectiveness such as minimum delay, minimum stop ratio, etc.

  • Small scale hydropower is one of most attractive and cost-effective energy technologies for installation within sewage treatment plants. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of a semi-kaplan micro-hydropower (MHP) system for application to sewage treatment plants with high flow fluctuations and a low head. The semi-kaplan MHP is equipped with an adjustable runner blade, and is without a guide vane, so as to reduce the incidence of mechanical problems. A MHP rating 13.4 kWp with a semi-kaplan turbine has been considered for Kiheung Respia sewage treatment plant, and this installation is estimated to generate 86.8 MWh of electricity annually, which is enough to supply electricity to over 25 households, and equivalent to an annual reduction of 49 ton $CO_2$. The semi-kaplan turbine showed a 90.2% energy conversion efficiency at the design flow rate of 0.35 $m^3/s$ and net head of 4.7 m, and was adaptable to a wide range of flow fluctuations. Through the MHP operation, approximately 2.1% of total electricity demand of Kiheung Respia sewage treatment plant will be achievable. Based on financial analysis, an exploiting MHP is considered economically acceptable with an internal rate of return of 6.1%, net present value of 15,539,000 Korean Won, benefit-cost ratio of 1.08, and payback year of 15.5, respectively, if initial investment cost is 200,000,000 Korean Won.

  • This paper presents the design and the application of a new self-powered hybrid electromagnetic damper that can harvest energy while mitigating the vibration of a structure. The damper is able to switch between an energy harvesting passive mode and a semi-active mode depending on the amount of energy harvested and stored in the battery. The energy harvested in the passive mode resulting from the suppression of vibration is employed to power up the monitoring and electronic components necessary for the semi-active control. This provides a hybrid control capability that is autonomous in terms of its power requirement. The proposed hybrid circuit design provides two possible options for the semi-active control: without energy harvesting and with energy harvesting. The device mechanism and the circuitry that can drive this self-powered electromagnetic damper are described in this paper. The parameters that determine the device feasible force-velocity region are identified and discussed. The effectiveness of this hybrid damper is evaluated through a numerical simulation study on vibration mitigation of a bridge stay cable under wind excitation. It is demonstrated that the proposed hybrid design outperforms the passive case without external power supply. It is also shown that a broader force range, facilitated by decoupled passive and semi-active modes, can improve the vibration performance of the cable.

  • Semi-active isolation systems based on leverage-type stiffness control strategies have been widely studied. The main concept behind this type of system is to adjust the stiffness in the isolator to match the fundamental period of the isolated system by using a simple leverage mechanism. Although this system achieves high performance under far-field earthquakes, it is unsuitable for near-fault strong ground motion. To overcome this problem, this study considers the potential energy effect in the control law of the semi-active isolation system. The minimal energy weighting (MEW) between the potential energy and kinetic energy was first optimized through a series of numerical simulations. Two MEW algorithms, namely generic and near-fault MEW control, were then developed to efficiently reduce the structural displacement responses. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed method, a two-degree-of-freedom structure was employed as a benchmark. Numerical results indicate that the dynamic response of the structure can be effectively dampened by the proposed MEW control under both far-field and near-fault earthquakes, whereas the structural responses resulting from conventional control methods may be greater than those for the purely passive control method. Moreover, according to experimental verifications, both the generic and near-fault MEW control modes yielded promising results under impulse-like earthquakes. The practicability of the proposed control algorithm was verified.

  • Semi-greenhouse type solar-dehumidification drying of oak was carried out to investigate the possibility to dry wood using solar energy in Korea. The energy balance equation was set up, considering all the energy requirements, and the solar radiation was calculated to analyze the efficiencies of solar dryer with and without the dehumidifier. The average temperature inside dryer and collector rose up to $52^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$, respectively. The average daily total beam, diffuse, and ground-reflected radiations were 7.27MJ, 8.70MJ, and 0.33MJ on the roof and 2.08MJ, 4.84MJ, and 5.37MJ on the south wall collector, respectively. Heat efficiency of solar dryer was 14.04% with dehumidifier and 13.13% without dehumidifier. The energy required to remove 1g of water from wood was 0.0289MJ/g in solar-dehumidification drying and 0.0310 MJ/g in semi-greenhouse type solar drying.

  • Radioactive corrosion product specimens were analyzed using an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and X-ray image mapping. It is difficult to analyze the composition of radioactive corrosion products using an EPMA due to the size and rough shape of the surfaces. It is particularly challenging to analyze the composition of radioactive corrosion products in the form of piled up, small grains. However, useful results can be derived by applying a semi-quantitative analysis method using an EPMA with X-ray images. A standard-less, semi-quantitative method for wavelength dispersive spectrometry. EPMA analysis was developed with the objective of simplifying the analytical procedure required. In this study, we verified the reasonable theory of semi-quantitative analysis and observed the semi-quantitative results using a sample with a good surface condition. Based on the validated results, we analyzed highly rough-surface radioactive corrosion products and assessed their composition. Finally, the usefulness of the semi-quantitative analysis was reviewed by verifying the results of the analysis of radioactive corrosion products collected from spent nuclear fuel rods.
