  • Currently, breast cancer ranks third among women' s cancers, and as its incidence is increasing, the incidence age is also becoming lower. Therefore it is necessary to address breast cancer for women in their twenties. As there is no way presently to prevent breast cancer, it is imperative that women take available interventions against predisposing factors. It is thus advisable that women acquire the necessary skills to recognize their own health status. The purposes of this study were to identify the effects of education on breast self-examination (BSE) through supportive education among college women during the period from August 2000 to February 2001, and to attempt to design an effective BSE educational program. The first class was implemented through lectures, pamphlets, videotapes, breast palpation on cloths, demonstration and practice for identification of breast masses through palpation using breast model. Supportive education was implemented bimonthly to the experimental group, and effects of the education between experimental and control groups were compared 6 months later. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. The effects on supportive education of college women in BSE 1) The mean score of retained knowledge about breast cancer and BSE was 30.88 in the experimental group, and 29.66 in the control group and significantly greater in the experimental group than in the control group (t= -2.062, p= 0.041). 2) Frequency of BSE practice was significantly greater in the experimental group than in the control group($\chi^2=0.045$, p=0,012). 3) The mean accuracy score in BSE practice was 19.10 in the experimental group, and 18.29 in the control group; accuracy was higher in the experimental group than in the control(t= -2.035, p= 0.444). 4) The mean score of self-efficacy was 35.05 in the experimental group, and 31.22 in the control group. The experimental group mean score was higher(t=-3.016, p=0.003). 2. There was a statistically significant correlation between self-efficacy and accuracy of BSE(r=0.447, p=0.000), knowledge of breast cancer and BSE(r= 0.306, p=0.000) and frequency of BSE(r=0,259, p=0,002) but no significant correlation between knowledge of breast cancer and BSE and frequency of BSE (r=0.071, p=0.403). On the basis of this study, periodic supportive education can increase knowledge of breast cancer and BSE, frequency of BSE, accuracy of BSE and self-efficacy. Suggestions: 1. There is a need to compare the effects of individual programs to acquire BSE behaviors in the young. 2. Further research is needed to test the continuity of the effects of BSE education.

  • This study was conducted before and after the non-equivalent control group to determine the effects of nursing students' self-observation using smartphone videos and feedback self-practice using QR-Code on core nursing skill performance ability, performance confidence, and self-efficacy. This is a quasi-experimental study using this design. The subjects of the study were 105 second-year nursing students at U University in G City, and the collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Fisher's exact test, -test, and paired t-test using SPSS 23.0 program. As a result of the study, indwelling catheterization performance significantly increased (t=8.532, p<.001), but intramuscular injection performance was not statistically significant (t=1.818, p=.077). Confidence in performing indwelling catheterization (t=5.099, p<.001) and confidence in performing intramuscular injections (t=5.473, p<.001) increased statistically significantly, and self-efficacy (t=4.332, p<.001) increased. Significantly improved. Accordingly, self-observation using smartphone videos and feedback self-practice using QR-code are more effective for core nursing skill items with high difficulty, and provide objective evidence that self-practice training methods are effective in improving confidence in performing core nursing skills and self-efficacy. In addition, we propose a repeated study that includes various levels of difficulty for the 20 core nursing skills.

  • This study is to analyze the influence of the digital divide on the digital daily life of the elderly. Adaptation tendencies for digital divide were measured and classified into groups for elderly people over 60 years old. And digital communication skills, digital confidence, digital self-control, and digital life satisfaction were measured. The research model used a cross over design model and a dual mediation model. As a result of the study, first, it was found that a group with high adaptive accessibility to the digital divide had a positive effect on the overall digital daily life. Second, a group with high adaptive literacy to the digital divide had a positive effect on the digital self-control. Third, digital communication skill has a positive effect on digital life satisfaction, and digital confidence and digital self-control play a mediating role. Based on these findings, we discussed strategies to overcome the digital divide in old age.

  • This study aimed to examine the effects of the web-contents nursing education program for fundamental nursing. The study is non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 64 nursing students in M City. The data was collected from September to October in 2013. The result showed that there were significant improvement in learning motivation(t=5.44, p<.001), practice satisfaction (t=6.98, p<.001), core nursing skills(p<.001) in the experimental group than the control group. However, self-directed learning was not statistically signigicant between the groups. Therefore, this study confirmed that the effect of the web-contents nursing education program in the fundamental nursing practicum. Also, the web-contents nursing education program is needed in the practicum education curriculum to enhance nursing students' competencies in these areas.

  • Virtual reality (VR) simulation in nursing education, especially in the teaching of VR simulations just prior to clinical practice, has the potential to enhance the effectiveness of clinical practice and better prepare nursing students for patient care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a preclinical VR simulation education program on the development of critical thinking, self-efficacy, problem-solving ability, and perceived clinical competency among undergraduate nursing students. The study was conducted between May and June 2021 using a pretest-posttest design with a control group. A total of 42 nursing students were recruited through convenience sampling from two separate classes. The intervention group participated in VR simulation education, while the control group engaged in lecture-based education, before beginning clinical practice. Assessments were conducted before preclinical education and after completing clinical practice using structured questionnaires. The data was analyzed using chi-square tests, independent t-tests, and ANCOVA. The findings indicated that the intervention group had a significantly higher score in perceived clinical competency compared to the control group (F = 5.25, p = 0.029) after controlling for pretest scores. However, there were no statistically significant differences in critical thinking, self-efficacy, or problem-solving abilities between the two groups. These findings suggest that preclinical VR simulation education is partially effective in preparing nursing students for their clinical practice, underscoring the need for a balanced educational approach that integrates VR with clinical practice to develop a full spectrum of nursing skills and knowledge.

  • It is a recent trend to emphasize community services for the rehabilitation of the mentally ill. However, it is also necessary to provide social work services for those living in the institutions, who is the most underprivileged in our society. To deal with interpersonal skill deficits which is one of the main characteristics of the mentally ill, social skills programs are being utilized, usually in the communities, but not in the institutions. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop and evaluate institution-relevant program for the improvement of assertiveness, which is the basic ability among the interpersonal skills, and self-esteem, which is the emotional basis of assertiveness. Because there has been little literature on such a program, a preliminary program had been implemented in order to include the peculiarities of the life in the institutions on the main program. The evaluation of the program effect was done by pretest-post test control group design, and its results are as follows. Firstly, in regard to program effectiveness, the pre and post test showed that self-esteem improved in a statistically meaningful way, but that assertiveness did not so. However, the staff verified the improvement of the group members' assertiveness to some degree in their actual lives. Secondly, in regard to the group process, the group interaction improved in a statistically meaningful way between 2nd and 5th session, and the improvement maintained till the program termination. Also the group members evaluated the program as helpful in their everyday lives. Therefore it can be said that the result of this program is encouraging. In light of this, several suggestions were made: utilizing more dynamic techniques in the program; developing the advanced level of the program; making an effort to change environmental structures as well as individuals; applying this kind of program to another living facilities such as those for the homeless or handicapped.
