  • This paper reviews the development condition of nanomaterials used in concrete over years. The definitions of nanomaterial, nanotechnology, and nano-concrete are reviewed. The impacts of nanomaterials on cementitious material in the point of advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. Moreover, this paper analyzes and classifies the nanomaterials into the extra quality enhancement and modification to plain cementitious composite. Indeed, the outstanding properties of the embedded nanomaterials can be introduced to concrete such as the mechanical improvement, pore structure refinement, hydrate acceleration, and smartness modifying of self-cleaning, and/or self-sensing. Before the full potential of nanotechnology can be realized in concrete applications, various techniques have to be solved including proper dispersion, compatibility of the nanomaterials in cement, processing, manufacturing, safety, handling issues, scale-up, cost, the impact on the environment and human health.

  • PLA 3D printed capsule of FDM method has advantages of mass production and low cost. However, it has a different strength depending on the direction in witch it is laminated. In this paper, structural design of several capsules, FEM analysis, and Compressive strength tests were conducted. As a result, the proposed capsule has a strong load of up to 217.9% compared to general capsule without a reinforcing structure.

  • Granting self-sensing performance in a building is an important performance to ensure the degree of damage and safety of the building. Since the current research is being conducted in the state before deterioration loss occurs, it is necessary to confirm whether the self-sensing performance is maintained even in the damaged conductive cement composite. As part of the study, electrical resistance characteristics were analyzed in conductive cement composites in which freeze-thawing and chemical corrosion occurred. As a result, it was found that the change in electrical resistance value due to freeze-thawing was not as large as 1%, and chemical corrosion occurred. It was found that the change in electrical resistance value of the tested specimen increased by about 10%.

  • Bacteria used in self-healing concrete, which arrest the crack, helps increasing the durability is well known. However, the survival and activity of the bacteria are precisely unknown. In this research, to know the bacteria's survival curve on the surface of the cement composite, bacteria's survival curve has been measured by CFU at different curing days. The survival curve of 3 days and 7 days curing does not show the significant differences in their survival tendency. However, the slope of death phase of 7 days curing was steeper than the 3 days of curing. This research was focused on the death phase but for further research, set of interval time will be reduced and observe the lag phase and exponential phase.

  • In securing durability of underground structure non-exposed waterproof materials, the company aims to improve durability of waterproof materials by studying more realistic weather conditions than KS standards and developers' durability standards. Analyzing the actual climate data in Korea and the temperature of the basement layer, it is a waterproofing sheet method, a self-adhesive sheet method in which a film and a compound, which are currently widely used as underground water-proofing, and a self-adhesive waterproofing sheet method, etc. We would like to present the guidelines necessary to prevent the temperature situation and waterproof defects that are ideal for setting the endurance conditions later.

  • In this study, cellulose-based bacterial pellets was used for the self-healing concrete manufacturing. The pellet is composed of complex cultured bacterial spore powder, methyl cellulose, two kinds of PVA nutrients and water, and is extruded through a hydraulic press to have a shape of 2mm in diameter to 3 to 4mm in length. Cellulose pellets expand at neutral pH, release bacteria and nutrients, and do not react in a basic environment, increasing the long-term survival rate of bacteria in cement mortar. In addition, pellet self-healing performance of pellet mortar was significantly higher than that of control mortar. Cellulose-based pellets are a new type of bacterial carrier system that will help develop self-healing concrete in the future by improving and optimizing pellets.

  • In this paper, microencapsulated healing agent was embedded in the polymer matrix to obtain self healing properties. Microencapsulation of methacrylate using polyurea-formaldehyde as a shell material and studied the effect of agitation rate on capsule characteristics such as size, shell thickness, and surface morphology. The formation of microcapsules was confirmed by FTIR and TGA, and capsule characteristics were studied by optical microscopy and SEM. The self-healing effect was evaluated using permeability measurements and further confirmed by surface analytical tools including optical microscope. According to the experimental results, the microencapsulated healing system has the self-heaing ability for artificial cracks.

  • Most of solar system dissemination has been focused on domestic hot water system of which utilization to a building is relatively simple and safe than solar heating system. Through the survey on a cause of solar house dissemination failure in Korea, we conclude that design integration and systematic approach method for technology application are the most important element for a successful solar house. KIER(Korea Institute of Energy Research) and Hanbat National University have started new project on a development of Zero energy Solar House, called ZeSH which can be sustained just by natural energy without the support of existing fossil fuel. This is the 1st phase research of 10 years long-term ZeSH plan which develops a low-cost and $100\%$ self sufficient ZeSH. The goal of 1st phase ZeSH research is to get a $70\%$ self sufficiency only in thermal loads. Actual demonstration house, named KIER ZeSH I was designed and constructed as a result of 1st phase research work in the end of 2002. Various innovative technologies such as super insulation, high performance window, passive and active solar systems, ventilation heat recovery system are applied and evaluated to the KIER ZeSH I. A lot of computer simulations had been conducted for the optimal design and system integration in every design steps. Considering all the results from detailed hourly computer simulation, it is expected that at least $70\%$ self-sufficiency in thermal loads which is 1st phase target value can be excessively achieved in actual demonstration house. Besides, many valuable findings from the design and analysis to construction could be established such as collaboration method among the participants, practical design and construction techniques for system integration and the others. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the main findings through the development of KIER ZeSH I project. Practical guidelines in every design step for new low- or zero- energy solar house is proposed as result.

  • In this study, cyclic loading analysis was conducted in order to understand the behavior of self-centering connections based on the number of PT(posttensioning) strands and initial posttensioning force. The initial posttensioning force needs to be above the yield moment of an angle for obtaining noticeable self-centering effect and it is proper that decompression moment ratio needs to be below 0.35 to minimize the residual displacement of major elements. As the number of PT strands increased, self-centering capacity also improved since initial posttensiong force in each PT strand has been decreased. It is also appropriate that initial posttensiong force needs to be less than or equal to 75% of yield strength of PT strands.
