  • In this paper, we used the V-Q Lissajous‘ figure for studying on the plasma discharge characteristics of the 42 inches AC-PDP. From the V-Q Lissajous‘ figure, we could observe exactly the driving conditions that the self-erasing discharge takes place. At the time, the total wall charges lessened by self-erasing discharge was calculated quantitatively. Beside of the just observation of self-erasing discharge and calculation of the charges lessened, we could find out the optimum driving conditions for inducing the maximum wall charges accumulated on the dielectric layer with measuring the Wall voltage from the V-Q Lissajous' figure.

  • This paper presents a new self-erasing discharge mode for the improvement of luminous efficiency and color purity of an AC plasma display panel (AC PDP). A new self-erasing discharge mode is produced between successive sustain pulses. by simultaneously applying the auxiliary short pulses at the falling edge of the sustain pulses without cross-talk during a sustain period. As a result. the luminous efficiency and color gamut are improved by 16% and 5%, respectively.

  • We proposed the new driving waveform which has changed the waveform of sustain division to improve luminous efficiency in plasma display panel. This sustain waveform is to add the ramp to the rectangular waveform, resulting in self-erasing discharge in the falling edge region. The proposed waveform has improved the luminous efficiency of 30% even in low driving frequency(25kHz), whereas the conventional driving waveform using the self-erasing discharge can improve the luminous efficiency only in high driving frequency( >150kHz). Front the results of this paper, we hope that the variety study on frequency and duty ratio, ramp waveform will increase the luminous efficiency.

  • A relationship between discharge delay time and the aging method were investigated: A-Y (Address electrode - Scan electrode) aging and conventional X-Y(Common electrode - Scan electrode) aging with the variation of sustain voltage beyond self-erasing discharge. Although A-Y aging decreases discharge delay time, it has several drawbacks like non-uniformity of discharge, degradation of luminous efficiency and a color temperature. In a conventional aging condition which is carried out near the mid-margin voltage, discharge delay time is short in low voltage and high frequency condition. As an alternative to conventional voltage aging, high voltage aging is suggested which is carried out at self-erasing sustain voltage region. High voltage aging shows lower discharge delay time and fast aging speed than conventional voltage aging.

  • A new sustain driving method is proposed to improve luminous efficiency by the generation of the self-erasing discharge during a sustain period in AC plasma display panel. As one subfield time in the conventional AC PDP is divided into the reset, address, and sustain period. Among them, as the square sustain waveform is alternately applied to the X and Y electrodes on the front plate during the sustain period, the plasma discharge for displaying the image is continuously produced. Meanwhile, in the conventional driving method, the address waveform applied to the A electrode on the rear plate is only driving during an address period and grounded during a sustain period. In this experiment, the negative pulse is applied to the A electrode at the latter part of the sustain pulse for improving the luminous efficiency producing the self-erasing discharge during the sustain period. The negative pulse on the A electrode can change from the space to the wall charge and induce the additional discharge by the accumulated wall charge when the voltages of three electrodes are grounded. As a result, the luminous efficiency will be measured with changes in the voltage level of the A electrode and the new driving method can be improved to the luminous efficiency about 32 % compared with the conventional driving method.

  • Electric fields and the wall voltages in a surface-type AC PDP cell were measured using a Laser Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy. For the condition of He 100Torr, 200V sustain voltage and 50kHz sustain frequency, the wall voltage dropped from about 50V to about -75V within $1{\mu}sec$ after the main discharge. And the wall voltage decreased with the rate of $10.8V/{\mu}sec$ due to the accumulation of the space charges after $1{\mu}sec$. But when the operating pressure was 40Torr, it increased with the rate of $4.5V/{\mu}sec$ because the diffusion effect of the wall charge on MgO surface was more dominant than the accumulation effect of the space charges. During the pulse-off period, the wall voltage decreased slightly due to the diffusion of the wall charge. When the sustain voltage was 250V, the self-erasing discharge occurred, and the absolute value of the wall voltage decreased rapidly just after the pulses were off, which was caused by the accumulation of the charges generated by the self-erasing discharge.

  • In order to reduce the power consumption in international standard IEC62087, the luminance efficiency should be improved at the low discharge load rather than at the high discharge load. Thus, this paper analysed the characteristics of the discharge at the panels with ITO Gap of $65{\mu}m$, $80{\mu}m$, and $100{\mu}m$ in 50-inch PDP with FHD resolution. It was well known that the long gap panel improves the luminance and the luminous efficiency. However, it is very difficult to drive the panel due to high driving voltage. When the normal driving method was applied at the panel with ITO gap of $100{\mu}m$, the phenomenon of the double peak was generated in the sustain period. We confirmed that main factor of the double peak is the self-erasing discharge. When the CLHS driving method was applied at the panel with ITO gap of $100{\mu}m$, the self-erasing discharge was improved in the sustain period. Also, the $V_S$ and $V_A$ minimum voltage of the CLHS driving method decreased about 9V and 12V compared with those of the normal driving method. Moreover, when the CLHS driving method was applied to the panel with ITO gap of $100{\mu}m$, the luminance and the luminous efficiency increased compared with those of the normal driving method. The luminance and the luminous efficiency greatly increased at the low discharge load. The less discharge load, the higher increase rate of the luminance and the luminous efficiency. Especially, the luminous efficiency at ITO gap of $100{\mu}m$ increased about 26.3% at the discharge load of 4% compared with that at ITO gap of $65{\mu}m$.

  • The priming discharge characteristic at the reset period in the ADS drive method of PDP was experimentally analyzed in this research. The amount of wall charge accumulated by the discharge and the accumulated time are unrelated to the priming pulse width. The self-erase discharge by excessive wall charge is related to the amount of wall charge by the priming discharge and this is related to space charge generated by the priming discharge. From the experimental result, in the optimized priming condition the plus width is 8$mutextrm{s}$ and the voltage is about 163V. The space charge which helps the self-erase discharge exists during about 16$mutextrm{s}$ immediately after generating the priming discharge. Therefore, it is suitable within 16$mutextrm{s}$ of the priming pluse width for the effective reset process.

  • The sustain discharge mode using various auxiliary pulses was proposed to improve both the luminance and luminous efficiency of ac-plasma display panel (ac-PDP). It was found that the various auxiliary pulses, which were applied at the rising and falling time of the sustain pulse, played a role in strengthening both the main and self-erasing discharges. As a result, the sustain waveforms with auxiliary pulse improved both the luminance of 23 % and the luminous efficiency of 36 %, when compared with the conventional sustain waveform without auxiliary pulse.
