어머니의 양육스트레스와 아동의 자아존중감에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Maternal Parenting Stress and the Children's Self Esteem)

  • The purpose of this research was to delineate the effect of parenting stress of the children's self-esteem. Such variables as the mother's age, her education level and maternal parenting stress were chosen for the analysis. The sample subjects were 659 pairs of fifth/sixth grade of elementary school and first/second grade of middle school and their mothers. The major findings of the research were as follows : First, the children's self-esteem was significantly different to mother's education level but the children's self-esteem not significantly different to mother's age. Second, parenting stress related to temperament, relationship and learning expectation was significantly different to children's self-esteem. Third, the result of stepwise multiple regression analysis on the effects of the maternal variables(mother's age, her education level, parenting stress) to the children's self-esteem indicated that maternal parenting stress related to temperament, relationship and mother education level were the significant contributing factors.

남녀 노인의 의사소통 행동과 결혼만족도 (Communication Patterns and Marital Satisfaction among Elderly Men and Women)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between communication patterns and marital satisfaction of elderly men and women. The participants of this study were 206 elderly (60 years and older), and they were all recruited in Seoul. The major findings of this study are as follows: First, the communication patterns of elderly men and women were affected significantly by background variables, self-esteem, and personality style. Second, marital satisfaction was affected significantly by background variables, self-esteem, and personality style. Self-esteem was the major factor that had significant impact on the marital satisfaction for all respondents. Third, there was a gender difference in the impact of background variables, self-esteem, and communication pattern on marital satisfaction. For elderly men, the factors affecting marital satisfaction were, in decreasing order, constructive communication, destructive communication, self-esteem, and economic condition, whereas for elderly women, the factors were, in decreasing order, constructive communication, self-esteem and destructive communication.

자아존중감, 성격 및 이성교제 요인이 여대생의 정적 정서에 미치는 영향 (Self-esteem, Personality and Dating Factors Influencing Positive Affect of Female College Students)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to determine factors related to self-esteem, personality, general characteristics and dating affecting positive affect in female college students. Methods: The subjects were 335 female students attending the three colleges in Chungnam Province. Data were collected using PANAS, Self-esteem, and DISC questionnaires. Hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis was mainly used. Results: The factors affecting positive affect were self-esteem, personality-dominance type, personality -consciousness type, economic status and boyfriend presence in female college students. These 5 factors accounted for 30.3% of positive affect of female students. In cases of having a boyfriend, factors affecting positive affect were self-esteem, economic status, boyfriend's height, and boyfriend's economic status. These 4 factors accounted for 30.5% of positive affect of female students who have a boyfriend. Conclusion: The positive affect levels of female students should be raised in practice through intervention such as a self-esteem improvement program, personality traits intervention program, and counseling on dating.

청소년의 자아존중감과 또래관계의 자기회귀교차지연효과검증 (The Longitudinal Relationship Between Self-Esteem and Peer Relationship in Adolescence: Using Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Modeling)

  • Objective: This study focused on the longitudinal associations between self-esteem and peer relationships in Korean adolescents while considering gender and timing-early and late adolescence-differences. Methods: The study made use of data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey. Three waves of data collected from 2,351 adolescents were analyzed by means of autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. Results: The results indicated that self-esteem predicted subsequent changes in peer relationship but not vice versa. Further, the results that longitudinal associations between self-esteem and peer relationships differed between male and female adolescents and between early and late adolescence. Conclusion: The findings revaluated the longitudinal relationship between self-esteem and peer relationships. Both gender and timing should be considered when planning interventions related issues about self-esteem and peer relationships in adolescence.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among family health, parental monitoring, and the self-esteem of adolescents. Data gathered from 306 adolescents in Incheon City and Gyeonggi-do were analyzed. The major findings were as follows: First, adolescents generally perceived their family as healthy, perceived their mothers' monitoring as higher than their fathers' monitoring. And many adolescents also had positive self-esteem. Second, there were positive correlations among family health, parental monitoring, and the self-esteem of adolescents. Lastly, the relatively important factors affecting adolescents' self-esteem were family health, parental monitoring, and family economic status. This study suggests we need many family life education programs in order to enhance family health, parental monitoring, and the self-esteem of adolescents.

Correlation between Self-esteem, Death Anxiety, and Spiritual Wellbeing in Korean University Students

  • Purpose: This study aimed at understanding the correlation between self-esteem, death anxiety, and spiritual wellbeing in university students. Methods: Cross-sectional method was used 671 students in South Korea. This study used the Self-esteem developed by Rosenberg, the Fear of Death Scale revised by Lester and Abdel-Khalek, and Spiritual wellbeing developed by Paloutzian and Ellison. Results: Relationships between self-esteem, death anxiety, and spiritual wellbeing revealed an inverse correlation between self-esteem and death anxiety, and a direct correlation between self-esteem and spiritual wellbeing. Conclusion: In order for students of establishing identity to lead a healthy life, there is a need for studies aiming at developing, implementing, and evaluating the results of consultation and education programs for maintaining spiritual wellbeing such as psychological counseling and logotherapy at the university or regional community level.

지체장애인의 지각된 낙인과 자아존중감 (Perceived Stigma and Self-esteem of the Person with Physical Disability)

  • Purpose: Perceived stigma may disrupt the ability of people with physical disability to successfully adapt to their situation. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between perceived stigma and self-esteem among adults with physically disabled. Method: The sample was drawn from August to October of 2006 at the rehabilitation centers and public health centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, Korea. The data were collected from 314 persons with physical difficulty. Self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Perceived stigma was measured using the Perceived Stigma Scale for the person with physical disability developed by Lee. Result: There were significant differences of perceived stigma of the person with physical disability according to marital status and economic status. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between perceived stigma and self-esteem of the person with physical disability. Conclusion: The Findings of this study suggest that using nursing intervention to decrease the perceived stigma may promote self-esteem among persons with physical disability.

  • This study investigated how perceived social support, self-esteem and parenting attitudes of mothers relates to children's social competence and explored the mediating role of parenting attitudes in multicultural families. Participants were 67 immigrant women and their children aged 4-6. Instruments were the Social Support Scale (Park, 1985), Maternal Behavior Instrument (Lee, 1986), Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) and Social Competence Scale (Doh & Falbo, 1994). Data were analyzed by Pearson's Correlation and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Results indicated that social support perceived by mothers related positively to their self-esteem and positive parenting, and to children's social competence. Mothers' self-esteem related positively to their positive parenting and to children's social competence. Maternal parenting behavior mediated the effects of social support and self-esteem on children's social competence.

자아존중감, 가족기능 및 사회적 지지가 대학생의 스트레스에 미치는 영향 (Impact of Self-esteem, Family Function and Social Support on Stress in Undergraduate Students)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate self-esteem, family function, and social support which might influence stress in college students. Method: Data were collected from October 15 to December 20, 2007 when 411 students completed a questionnaire which included Self-esteem scale, Family APGAR questionnaire, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Global Assessment of Recent Stress scale. The collected data was analyzed with the SPSS Win 14.0 statistics program. Results: The scores for stress showed significantly negative correlations with the scores for self-esteem (r= -.394, p<.001), family function (r= -.215, p<.001), and social support (r= -.249, p<.001). Self-esteem, family function and social support by friends were significant predictors and accounted for 18.5% of the variance in stress in undergraduate students. Conclusion: Future stress management programs for undergraduate students should be developed to reinforce self-esteem, family function and social support by friends.

또래에 의한 괴롭힘이 청소년의 자아존중감에 미치는 영향에 관한 단기 종단적 연구: 애착 및 우정관계의 역할 (Influences of Victimization by Peers on the Self-Esteem of Adolescents: The Role of Attachment and Friendship)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of victimization by peers on self-esteem and the role of father/mother attachment and friendship with a range of 354 2nd-grade junior high school students(169 boys and 185 girls). The subjects reported victimization, father/mother attachment, friendship(number of friends and presence of a best friend), self-esteem and their peers rated victimization, too. The result indicated that (1) Victims in the end of the second semester were also those who were victimized by peers in the end of the first semester, (2) The victimization by peers effected on self-esteem in boys and girls, (3) The interaction effect of victimization and parent attachment on self-esteem was statistically significant only for boys, and friendship on self-esteem was statistically significant only for girls.
